Vertex spinner repair ideas
« on: March 30, 2015, 12:08:19 PM »
One of the BR members gave me his spinner to see if I can figure out the problem and hopefully try to fix it.

Well, I know what the problem is and I don't have the tools strong enough to drill right through the bearing shaft. Or don't have anymore ideas to lock these two pieces together.

The bowl and the bearing shaft is molded together. There's no way to take it apart. So I was trying to drill through the "neck", the shaft between the bowl and base. Inside the hard mold is the bearing shaft. This is where the prolem is located. The bowl and the metal bearing shaft are molded together and are not binding or bonded together anymore. So when the motor is on, you can hold the bowl to stop it from spinning. Everything on this spinner works fine.

Anyway, I tried drilling a self tapping screw, but that didn't work. I took a steel drill bit to make a pilot hole, but with steel and a rounded surface it was difficult to do so. I don't have anyother tools.

I can try making 4 holes in each side and make a divot in the steel shaft. Then use epoxy......do you think this will hold????

I need ideas to lock this two parts together....thanks.

Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

The only way to drill through the shaft will be with a drill press and clamps to firmly hold the shaft from moving. A hand drill isn't going to work. Epoxy will probably only work as a temporary fix.

The two parts were probably pressed together when it was originally manufactured, but the engineers who designed it did not take into account someone with Ryan's strength.  ;D ;D

I truely believe guys like ryan that weight less than 130 lbs have super human strength. Here at my work, a patient didn't get his narcotics unless he saw the doctor first for eval. Well, this 28 yr old male skinny like a chopstick got so pissed off and stormed out of the lobby and shoulder hit the front door taking this heavy duty door off all for hinges. Granted each hinges just had 2 screws instead of 4, it was mighty impressive to see this 5'8" 130 lbs man just tackle down the door.

Yea, I was kidding, but Ryan is probably stronger than average. Dude is in good shape.

On the spinner, you can probably have a machine shop punch a hole though that shaft. They might have a better idea of how to bind the cup and shaft together too, but just to drill a hole shouldn't cost much.

LOL I too was kidding about skinny guys being super human.....

the guy next door is pretty crafty, he comes from a line of builders and fixers lol... I'll have to search to see if there's a machine shop close by...

I think if a hole is drilled through one end out the other, and use a bolt/washer/nut system, that would hold the bowl/cup and bear shaft together.

Also, I think storing the spinner in a hot garage will weaken the bond over time???? plus the pressure applied to the spinner........I keep my stuff in AC storage during the summer when I don't bowl much and take out during the winter season and leave it in the garage.

Contact the company who makes it and see about replacing the parts through them.

Given if your saying the bowl is just pressed on the shaft and now is just spinning on the shaft.

You should be able to pull the bowl off and then you could drill a hole in the collar on the bowl and tap it and put a set screw in.

No reason to drill all the way through the shaft, unless your going to put a pin in it.

You could possibly braze/tack weld the bowl and shaft together I guess (assuming the bowl is metal).

there should be a keyway that has a "key" in it
see picture
http://www.burgerman.info/55s_motor/shaft.jpg

the key sheared and needs to be replaced, a $1.00 part at best
manufacturer should be able to provide the info and/or a drawing

I emailed vertex a few days ago, and there is no replacement parts. The bearing shaft and bowl are molded together. Alex from vertex suggested a set screw be placed. The spinner is 10 yrs old.....

JohnP and I think alike, with the set screw it might get off balance. But I have lead and weights to balance the bowl if need be. Even with pinning it through with nut and bolt, it'll be off balance.

Anyway, I'll figure something out. Being 10 yrs old, I'm not sure vertex will fix it....

OMG how much do you think a set screw weights that it's going get it out of balance to the point you would need a counter balance.

Here's the bowl on one of my spinners that came with a set screw, it's screwed into that big thing on the side. It sure isn't out of balance and theres no counter weight of any kind.

As for pinning with a nut and bolt  even that wouldn't get it out of balance.(Personally I would use a Shear or spring Pin instead if I was going to drill through the shaft, though that would be harder to do than just doing a set screw)

About the only way you would get it out of balance would be to some how get the bowl way off center or got the bowl out of round.

I said might get off balance. I'm going off from experience in racing - tires.....I'm not physi dude... some spinners wobble more than others and the vertex is pretty balanced.

The Vertex bowl and shaft don't come apart and I wish it did. but, it's not a bad spinner at all. I have mine still working and looking like it's new after 8 years of use. I even have the box that it was shipped in! lol

Anyway It shouldn't be long, we'll get this spinner working. thanks for all the ideas and we will explore these ideas.
