does everyone use a "spare ball" for 10 pin shot?
« on: December 09, 2011, 11:12:01 AM »
i guess its time for me to try to cave on this subject. for 15 years i have used my strike ball and just moved left, killed the wrist and thrown over the center arrow. lately for some reason i have been shaving the 10 pin to the left or missing it all together. last season in 30 weeks i converted 65% of my 10 pins which isnt that great. I average 207 and bowl one night a week. i feel good using my strike ball for any spare on the left, i just hook it into it. as for the right side i have been missing them to the left a lot. SO....... should i get a plastic 10 pin spare ball? i still have to hit my mark but this should cut down in missing the 10 pin to the left, right? what percentage of people use a seperate, plastic spare ball? should i go down a pound to 15 if i do? i use all 16 lb stuff.

lets face it... this isnt deadlifting or picking up women.. its BOWLING!!!! Stop acting tough when you roll 4 strikes in a row!!!

All single pins spares for me are shot with spare ball. i worked on this and i am very comfortable with it.

To look at it another way, why put wear and tear on a 200+ dollar reactive ball, when a 60.00 plastic ball will do the same thing, maybe better?

I throw my plastic spare ball at my 6 and 10 pins.  Watching pro's over the years I have seen some like Norm Duke and Wes Malott that throw a strike ball straight and others like Walter Ray and Chris Barnes that throw plastic.  It is purely your preference, mine happens to be throw the plastic.

It boils down to practice.   I used to think it was necessary to have a plastic ball for the 10 pin spare (right handed), but after a league seeing Purvis Granger pick up spare by just flattening the hand.  I converted.  Was finally convinced me was seeing other people using spare balls and still have a poor conversion average when it comes to picking the 10 pin/7 pin.  On a good night, I usually pick up the all my corner pins, on a bad I might go down to 60 percent.  Due to lack of practice.  Which is about the same when I was using plastics for corner.
So use or don't use is up to you.  Practice however is required.  By the way, the change in your sparing average is probably to a small change in your delivery.  It helps a lot if you can have someone knowledgeable observe you bowl.

Hope to have helped.

I agree with this. Make sense. Use a plastic and keep that favorite strike ball of yours longer.
