WHY DO BOWLING BALLS CRACK
« on: June 11, 2014, 01:27:20 AM »
I went  to use my 2nd dimension today and found a huge crack from the thumb hole around the ball to the finger hole......this is the fourth ball this has happened to.....all Storm balls.....I don't have this problem with any other brand....Does anyone have any idea why this is happening only to my storm equipment

There are several ideas why balls crack:
1. Driller error:
1A. Using dull bits
1B. Drilling too fast
1C. Drilling holes too close to the pin; pin should be at least 1" from any hole. If you need to put the pin near a hole, put it in the center of a hole.
1D. Using too much Superglue. Superglue can react with the resin. When gluing inserts or slugs 2 drops on either side is all that is necessary.
1E. Not beveling ALL holes.

2. Subjecting ball to sudden large changes in temperature and/or humidity.
Most balls consist of 3 widely different substances: core, filler, coverstock. They expand and contract at different rates. When doing do they can easily cause the coverstock to expand or contract with too much force and thus, it cracks.

Most balls should be kept at temperatures below 140 degrees Fahrenheit (some below 125; see manufacturer's recommendations in their warranty.)

3. Some people have speculated that the curing of the resin coverstock in the wrong environment (too much heat, too much humidity, too little heat or humidity) can cause balls to crack. No resin chemist has come along to document or deny this, as far as I know.

4. Some people have speculated that leaving balls sitting on one spot for two many years can cause a ball to crack. (I have had drilled balls sitting in my basement in their original boxes and plastic bag for years without cracking. The temp varies from 59 - 66 and humidity varies from 45- 55% all year long.)

As for why only your Storm balls have cracked, honestly, unless you have treated them differently from your other balls or your driller has done something different or a different driller has drilled them, it's just bad luck. All balls, I mean, every single brand, has cracked.

Because Storm is the most popular right now, they make the most balls; therefore, they are going to have the most balls crack.

I think extreme climates can play a roll in some cases. I've noticed since not using finger inserts that ive had cracking go down to one ball out of hundreds.(still using thumb slug)

The most recent ballive had ctack was undrilled. This is where I think the most common event mentioned by justrico occurs. The ball never stops curing. If that's the case any and all balls are at risk.

Makes sense, concrete can continue to cure for years after its poured, in fact the stuff in Hoover Dam won't finish for like another 100 years. I could see resin doing the same thing, especially considering with those faster hardening agents.

I think its just random bad luck mostly. I mean I left two Storm balls and a Columbia 300 sitting in my parents barn for several years, not air conditioned or heated. Here in Tennessee the temps can swing from 100+ to near zero and I'm still throwing those three balls.

I had two that have cracked...and massive cracks, not just something at the surface.  Forget what one of them was but the other was the LRG.  Both had been stored in climate controlled environs and everything else survived, to include the Roto RH bleeders.

Damage was discovered when I went to move a few years back...neither had been thrown in several years (nor had the other few dozen on the shelves).

I'll be waiting for one of my new balls to crack.....Pin is below and between the fingers, the top corners of the pin is drilled through..... :P :-[

Of all the balls that cracked, most were storm products.... too much glue, sitting too long with weight on the finger holes, and drill angle or bevel.....

Also, I was told the ball is still curing...i have storm balls with pin not flush with shell.

Probably a design characteristic so that the bowling ball companies can increase sales!
