Women's Open was TERRIBLE! USBC/PBA are a Joke!!
« on: July 03, 2012, 08:44:36 PM »
Why does the USBC and the PBA have to make bowling a novelty?  Bowling outside, bowling in a football stadium, bowling in a baseball stadium, bowling in an arena, bowling at Six Flags, bowling with gold pins, bowling in different houses using the same ugly @ss backdrops, bowling with plastic balls, bowling trick shots, bowling 5 different formats in the same season, bowling on the official PBA oil patterns, bowling every different way EXCEPT for the way the game has been bowled for decades.

It's BS.  The ball companies and sponsors should be furious.  I'm sure Ebonite plastic balls will be flying off the shelves now the Kelly won the Women's Open with one.  If I were the women, I would be furious, too.  They were just made to look stupid on prime time TV.  You average 230 or 240 all week and in the finals you can't break 150.

It's pathetic what they are doing to the game.

High game of the night goes to Shannon O'Keefe in match 2, winning 182-165 over Stefanie Nation.  Other than that, noone else broke 170.

I agree, it was unwatchable.. I love bowling and have watched it on TV since I was a little kid but this was absolutely horrible.

Kudo's to all the woman for hanging in there, smiling and acting like it wasn't tearing them up inside to bowl under those conditions for a title as prestigious as the US Open.

Whats is so wrong with different oil patterns, different houses, different pins, and different formats?

Why cant the sport change? Football has, golf has, why can't bowling change?

If they were shooting 250+ every game you would
Whine about that too.

Oil patterns always change, bowling balls change, bowling centers bowled in change, its when you start changing things for the worst and start losing your base of viewers that you can kill a sport.

They dont bowl in bowling alleys anymore. Format changes are fine if it isn't weekly and sparatic with no consistancy. Many sports evolve, but still keep their core the same. Football, golf, baseball ect. Bowling has tried every gimmick under the sun in the past ten years to the point it is literally unwatchable for most.

Remember when at one of the tournaments they had three women bowling at once on different lanes side by side? WTF was that?

Did you like the change you saw today with the women? Was that good for you or anyone else?

I agress that it was a very poor way to treat these women and their profession.

Remember bowling is a F$%KING INDOOR SPORT!!!

Neither the PBA nor the USBC sponsored this show. The US Open is run by the Bowling Proprietors of America( B.P.A.A. ).

I stand corrected.  The USBC/PBA AND BPAA suck.  Besides BPAA headquarters is in the same building with USBC.  Let's not pretend they don't work together on these events.

By biggest problem with this event was that there was no way for the women to practice on the condition they bowled on.  Where can you practice outside with the sun, wind and dust and know how it will affect your game.  You can't.  All their practice and skills went out the window.  I'm sorry, but that was not bowling.  It was a circus sideshow.  Bring the clowns next time.

I hear a lot of bitching, but no suggestions.  Get rid of the USBC/PBA/BPAA.  Yea, that will work, then there won't be any bowling.  What do you suggest other than getting rid of the current people who put bowling on TV?

Well for one thing - the people that put on this dog and pony show were using our money to do it. Yeah I know, it was their money after we gave it to them.

That could change - the disincentives to bowl in tournaments just keep piling up.

I felt really badly for the gals that worked so hard to make the TV final only to get stuck in this disaster. There is no good face to be put on it. The Open used to mean something; Kelley should be able to brag about her win without an * next to it.

Have the unholy trinity of PBA, USBC, and BPAA jumped the shark? They have for me. This show gave all bowlers a black eye.

Let's just ask one final question. What would be your reaction if the golfers held the final round of their US Open at a miniature golf course complete with wind mill?

This is nothing new on topics where many suggestions have been made. In terms of PBA and what is left of the women pros that bowl these events.

Have them bowl in  bowling alleys.

Have them bowl across ths U.S.

Have events during the course of the week where the FANS including the many newer
youth bowlers in High Schools across the country are invited out to watch. Maybe have a meet and greet with them.

Don't televise your events at the exact same time as the most popular sport in the U.S. (NFL)

Grow the core values of your sport similar to golf. Promote the sportsmanship of the game.

Don't forget that bowling is an indoor sport!!!

The PBA has never been fan friendly, only to the point where it's easy to watch and be close to the pros.  Other than that it's never been fan friendly or had fan interaction.  It was better in the 50s-80s as bowlers were more or less super stars and fan friendly themselves based on overall "fame" and how people acted socially.

The PBA would go along way with better starting times,  more clinics,  more meet and greets and more fan interaction.

There should be ball rep and clinics for fans during the week.  There should be product demos and things like that.

The PBA doesn't "tour" any longer so those ideas are out the window now.

Even the cities and towns where bowling is big, and fans love bowling the PBA can't seem to strike deals with bowling centers there any longer.

The PBA seems to think that the European and overseas two handed players, and overall international bowling personalities are the way to bring bowling back.   I don't understand this thinking and it's very clear to me that the PBA is only really interested in "international" bowling events any longer.

The worst part about this is for the last 15 years or so, the PBA has done little to promote any of the American PBA players or build their brand from within,  but now that there seems to be a fascination with European or international players (where this fascination fits in with Americans is another thing I don't really understand), the PBA is gung ho to throw as much spaghetti to the wall and see what sticks when it comes to them.  The logic behind this makes no sense at all.   The only player they really kind of promote is Rash, and that's seems to be because he is the "rival" of Belmonte.

To me it seems like this WTBA might be what takes over the PBA thus putting an end to professional bowling in the USA or at least an end to the PBA as a sports organization.

Unless new money comes from somewhere, or some sort of new ownership comes out of the wood work,  I don't think your going to see any sort of new PBA that focuses on "touring" and professional bowling.

It's going to morph into international bowling.

I have a neat idea.  What about making a reality tv show about the pros, that coincides with the toutnaments, show america something different, and still show the tournaments.  i feel that would help ratings, especially if theres feuding just like all of the other highly watched shows :o

idk, id watch it.
