It's really amazing to see how many people who are 190 to 220 ave range and don't know how to keep score...... :-X :P ???

On the bright side, there are several ppl I know who are below 190, who do know how to keep score..... :) ;D

Dear xrayjay:

There are quite a few such people in my area. Then again, I live in an area that contains one of the highest age demographics in the nation, and there are a lot of senior citizens with rather low averages who still remember how to keep score.

Where is this?.... They prolly still remember phone numbers of every family member lol...nowadays we rely on technology too often..

I mentioned this to my buddy and he said, "here (Bay Area, Cali) the lower average bowlers know how to score very well. They know what to shoot to cash before bowling."

What about bowlers that don't know the pins by number?  I often hear someone talking about a spare they missed or a split they picked up, and almost no one has any idea which pins they left.

I learned that very early on, and am always surprised that people that are regular and sometimes very good bowlers, but they only seem to know a few pins by number.

They usually know the "big" one in front. LOL

I heard someone say that recently. They actually thought the 1 pin was larger than the others rather than just being closer to them.

The other one I like is counting boards. Apparently some think you need some sort of masters degree to locate board 12 out on the lane.

I had a teammate for 3 seasons who has been bowling for some time and would get the 8 and 9 pin mixed up. I understand if you're a lefty ;) - a good buddy of mine is a lefty and he thinks righty when it comes to pins......anyway, my teammate would "Air count" or point at the deck and count when he left a bucket and then ask me what pins were behind the key pin. I didn't mind his lack of pin location knowledge, he was a good spare shooter anyway lol

hey, some go by Richard, some go by Dick... it's all good to me....

The reason why I feel manual scoring should be a requirement in youth leagues. Younger pee-wee's no, but the older kids should have to experience it. One of the centers I bowl at lost their scoring system this summer and we had to score by hand for te first month of the season and Oh My, some looked like they lost their best friend. Best thing about it was it kept people down on the lanes and ready to bowl when it was their turn. They could not walk 5-6 lanes away to BS and look at screen to see when they were up to bowl.

Keeping score by hand is such a thing of the past. I remember as kid, making money by keeping score at some of the local big tournaments. You sat there, wrote the scores with grease pencil on the overhead and at the end day walked away with $10-$20 in tips, plus a small amount from the center/tournament. Not bad for a youngling.

I still remember one house we had growing up. As the other houses were going to automatic scorers, this house refused to budge. It was older and didn't even have overhead projection. Every score was on big sheets of paper. I can't remember if they ever did get scorers or not. They were forced to close because they didn't own the land they were sitting on and the owner sold it to developers when real estate prices jumped. They decided a strip mall would make them more money then the bowling alley.

In coaching one of the high school teams last year, this was something we sprung on the kids as they were bowling.  During practice, we'd see what they had and would ask them what they would have if such and such happened from where they were at.  At least it made them think about how to score and what marks are what.

I do feel that anyone bowling should learn how to keep score just for the sake of it.

Pins are still in the same location, regardless of dexterity?  No?
