The Primal Rage… or as it has become better known as, the Red Ball!

What is there to say about this new release from MOTIV, two words come to mind immediately, versatility, and continuation. The personal experiences with the ball have been astonishing, from the 300 thrown the 2nd game out of the box (first game the 7 pin just had to get in the way on two shots), to the different angles this ball allows me to play as ball reaction changes. As experienced first-hand on several occasions, I have been able to play two different angles during one set because of the reaction from one lane to the other. One lane I would need to play a straighter and bit more tighter shot, where the other lane I would need to stay firm, move my target inside and project the ball down lane. Although carry would appear to come into question when such shots need to be made, the Primal Rage’s quick response to friction provides great continuation through the pins as it makes its turn down lane.
The Primal Rage has quickly become one of the first bowling balls out of my bag, there isn’t much more I can ask for in a ball after this was released. This ball provides a good amount of length without the concern that it will not pick up down lane and drive through the pins. Disappointed is a word that does not exist in the dictionary once the Primal Rage responses at the first sign of friction and clears the deck of any pin standing in its way.

Motiv Primal Rage review:

Just when you think that Motiv has topped out with performance, they create the #redball. This ball really picks up where the Scream left off... with the Rage being able to get through the fronts as easy and then WHOA!!!! off the spot. This is easily the most angular ball I have ever thrown from any company. Since the Scream and the Rage share a core, what makes this ball crazy good is the new coverstock. The new coverstock really is conducive to multiple playing styles yet providing the fierce “flippage” that we all desire while going through the pins as if they are made of waffle cones.

I have a similar “pin up” layout on my Primal Scream and my Rage is easily 5-7 boards stronger... ALL down-lane! This is the ultimate “buy time” ball for me when the pattern is transitioning and I have to get deep. I can move left and not worry for a second that the ball will die or burn up before 50 ft. It really allows me be confident in my swing and that will make anyone feel better about their game.

Speed: 18 mph
Rev: 400 - 450

Primal Rage Layout 1: Pin Up 70 x 4 7/8 x 35

Reaction: With the pin up layout, the ball picks up just after the midlane. The Rage holds true to the angular promise of the product description. With this lay out I am able to easily throw this on a fresh medium - heavy oil condition. Give the ball some room and watch this ball work.

Primal Rage Layout 2: Pin Down 85 x 4.5 x 55

Reaction: The pin down layout is a great compliment to the pin up. This layout provides a touch more length while maintaining a similar strong angular back end reaction. I have found this layout to be more angular than the pin up, but provides just enough extra length.

Overall: I have spent a lot of time this summer tweaking my span and release. I was amazed at how well the ball rolls with my new adjustments. So far I have used both layouts on different patterns, in different houses, and different leagues. Layout #1 seems to be my benchmark ball to get a read. I know with this layout I can easily move around and play deeper because it reads the lanes earlier. This ball is definitely a favorite of mine. Believe the hype of the strong back end reaction!

My Motiv Primal Rage: Pin 1 inch above ring finger / CG 2 inches below ring finger

The Primal Rage has been a great addition to my bag. I thought I would drill it up and hardly be able to use it because it would just be too angular for me. I really like to see a smooth reaction off the spot, but after using this ball on the 2013 USBC pattern and house league shots. I have come to realize this is not a niche ball.

The Primal Rage is very clean in the fronts and more versatile than I was expecting, I have been able to open the lane and still get it back.

The cover is 1500 grit with Motiv Power Gel for shine. If you bowl in an older center or a center with high friction I would suggest taking the cover up to 2000 and use Power Gel to get through the mids.

Conditions I have used the Primal Rage on: 2013 USBC National’s, Yellow Brick Rd, Bourbon Street and various house/modified house shots.

Where it fits in my bag: It's the most angular ball in my bag when. It fits under my Raptor Talon when that is hooking too much.

When I use it: Typically I start with my “BIG” ball (Raptor Talon) and when it is hooking too much and I need a ball that will get down lane and control the back ends I use the Primal Rage. That is middle or so of game 2 on a THS. On a sport pattern I will take it one around game 3-4

This is my first review so I try and give as much information as possible.  I do not know all the lingo so I will try and paint the best picture as I can.  My Primal Rage is drilled with the pin about and inch and a half above my ring finger and about an inch below and kicked a few centimeters out.  This ball gives me something totally different than I had in my bag previously.   The Rage just has a pure want to hook like no other ball I have owned and I have been around bowling for a long time.  So in short, if you are looking for a ball that is very smooth down lane with an amazing never ending reaction.  This is the purest rolling ball I have rolled in such a long time.  If you are someone looking for a great tournament ball for a heavier oil pattern or you are someone with problems creating angle then this is the ball for you.

The Impulse V2 core is back MOTIVnation! Wrapped around a new cover stock called Fusion Pearl, we introduce the Primal Rage! The Primal rage will be known as #redball. Out of the box at 1500 and MOTIV Power Gel Polish it provides the strongest overall and versatile motion from the MOTIV brand of bowling balls.

I have drilled two Primal Rages so far. The first one was laid out 40 x 4.5 x 60 with a large weight hole 2” down my VAL. This ball is my favorite AND go-to ball. With additional surface it reads the lane earlier and it smooth, while out of the box or shinier it will provide more length and much more entry angle. This ball is great for league and tournaments! The second Primal Rage I drilled weaker with the pin above my middle finger, 60 x 6 x 40. This ball gives me easy length through the front part of the lane and a strong backend reaction. This ball is great on the fresh when the backends are crisp and a gem when the lanes begin to breakdown and we must move to the left.

In comparison to the other bowling balls in the MOTIV line, this ball is going to get quite a bit of hype. #redball is making a statement on the PBA Summer Swing making the show on the 32’ and 52’ feet patterns, one winning the entire TV show!

es, the Red Ball (Primal Rage) is EVERYTHING it was advertised to be (and more).  It is the strongest ball in the Motiv line.  This ball will give you the ability to get into heavy oil AND bring the ball back to the pocket with ease.  Unlike most heavy oil balls, this ball clears the fronts and will give you a motion that no other ball can give you on heavy oil.  Order yours today.  You will not be disappointed.

COMMENTS

Likes: This ball is a favorite of mine on heavier patterns.  It allows you to play in the oil but still read the lane early enough to get the arcing reaction downlane.  It hits so hard and just devastates the pins upon entry into the pocket. As you move in, the ball just gets smoother and smoother when reading the lane.  A must have in your bag.

Dislikes: None whatsoever
