Octane Burn
« on: November 09, 2015, 03:17:09 PM »
Description: The Octane Burn from Motiv was designed for light to medium oil lanes and offers length with a powerful backend reaction. This ball has the Helix SFP Reactive coverstock and is finished with a 5500 grit LSP finish.  This combination is clean with a good reaction to friction while being angular with a smooth transition and control.  The Quadfire core helps provide length and good track flare.  For most bowlers this is a great go to ball when the lanes start to break down.  Competitive bowlers will enjoy the consistency this ball provides as well as the controlled transition at the backend.

Motiv Octane Burn Ball Specs:

- Color: Blue Flame Pearl (NeoMark Color: Yellow Pearl/Silver Pearl)

- RG: 2.55 (15# ball)
- Diff: 0.043 (15# ball)

- Recommended Lane Conditions: Light to Medium Oil

My Review for the Octane Burn would be as follows. The intent of this ball was to have a pearl ball that is clean to the break point on the break down and have the ball more controlled motion off the back part of the lane. With the controlled motion off the back part of the lane, this Pearl is closer to some of the past leases Motiv has had. The Core is my favorite Core in the Motiv line as the core leads to a clean look to the spot and less change in motion than some of the Higher RG Cores. I have Drilled 2 Burns, one that measures 60 X 4.5 X 70 pin down and the other is 50 X 4.5 X 45 pin over. The pin down as expected is smoother of the 2 and with less over all motion. I would say more controlled motion, motion reminds me the One of my Favorite balls the QZ2 Backdraft, cleaner than the QZ2 and more down lane movement. The pin Over is over all cleaner to the spot and more over all change in direction. This has allowed me to open up the angles when Pin down seems to be out of energy and stops hitting as I creep left. So With the two there is a nice change of pace between the two for later in the day on longer formats.
Over all this ball seems to be more true to the motions that have made me MOTIVated. The smoother down lane motion and good but not aggressive midlane motion is exactly what has been missing in the line for a while. I would say if you are looking for a controlled Hockey stick Motion this ball is exactly what you are looking for. Not as strong as the Red Ball down lane and cleaner to the spot than the Panic or the Reline. The Burn falls in place quite well on the ball chart and is perfect for the leftovers or as the league pattern seems to dry up and you need to chase left.

The Octane Burn is the latest medium to dry lane ball to be offered by MOTIV bowling. Featuring the same Quadfire core as the original Octane but wrapped by a new cover stock called Helix SFP Reactive which provides an earlier and smoother response to friction. Comparing the Octane Burn to the original Octane, the Burn starts up a few feet sooner and makes a smoother transition in the back part of the lane whereas the Octane provided a much sharper reaction to the friction. The Burn is much more controllable on broken down patterns. My Burn is drilled pin down with no weight hole and I have had success with this ball on the medium 39-43 foot patterns. This layout allows me to control the breakpoint even more and I can keep my angles closer together. The Quadfire core has been a lifesaver for me on drier patterns as it creates a very controllable shape at the breakpoint. The Burn is a must for any tournament bowler if you need length and control as the lane pattern starts to break down.

Review:
The New Motiv Octane Burn has a nice match up of core and cover. The Burn uses a tried and true Quadfire core with a tamer shell than the original Octane. The Octane Burn, for me fits between my Tag and the Apex. It has more control on the backend also for me. The Octane Burn has great shelf appeal and gets a lot of attention. We had a Motiv Test Drive Demo recently and surprisingly the Burn was the best seller at the Event. This is unusual because it is usually the Hook Monsters that sell the best. We saw some very good youth bowlers with slow speed fall in love with this ball as well as folks who like to play up the boards.
The Octane Burn gets easy length through the front even as it is revving up. The Burn has a nice controlled backend move with plenty of hit. This combination of core and cover does not seem to have any over/under problems.  This Burn digs the corner pins out nicely.  I have drilled plenty of these balls now and they seem to work for many styles when a weaker predictable reaction is needed. Layouts are easy with this ball and it’s almost as if you just put three holes in it and it will roll great! I think high rev bowlers, slower speeds or people bowling on dryer lanes will have a winner with the Octane Burn. I tested the Octane Burn on fresh flatter pattern for the video, but it allowed me more area on dryer conditions.
Motiv has really been filling its Ball Reaction Chart with great equipment and though continuation may be the new buzzword, Motiv balls definitely have it!

Summary:
The Octane Burn gets easy length and controlled backend.
This is another great looking ball.
This is a great ball for dryer lanes.
If you want predictable hit, you got it.

The Octane Burn is an interesting piece for me but I say that as a compliment. Although this is a continuation of the Octane line, the Burn is not an exact follow up to its predecessor. The Burn is actually more of a replacement for the Tribal line in terms of being meant for those light to medium oil patterns. The beauty of this ball lies with the backend motion.
I found that with the Burn, although too much length has not always been a friend of mine, the backend more than puts my mind at ease. With this combination, I am able to keep the lane in front of me rather than trying to go coast to coast (which isn’t my favorite approach to the lanes) and risk the loss of carry to vs. giving up the pocket. I find myself favoring the Burn over the Shock at times just because of the fact of its controllable reaction.
A perfect example, now I will say that the pattern was a fresh house shot but a bit heavier than what my home lanes lay down. When I initially began the tournament for the singles event, I choose to begin with by Revolt Havoc, playing up the boards up 5. Now my Havoc has a stacked drilling to maximize its hook potential. Initially the look was very favorable but as the set progressed, the ball began finishing stronger down lane and the 6 Pin became by best friend very quickly. Unfortunately, a slight move to the right with my feet, the ball just did not pick up enough to carry the 7. The final game of the set, I decided to switch to my Octane Burn and keep the shot simple and up 5. I proceeded to finish the set with a 260. My day was not done yet however, as I would move to the pair to my left and compete in doubles. Considering the Burn allowed me to keep the shot in front of me, I decided to stick with it. It would turn out to be the right choice as I would post up a 300 the second game of the 752 set.

Ball Specs and Layout:
Helix SFP Reactive
5500 Grit LSP
Quadfire Core
55x4x70 w/ P3 hole

Bowler Stats:
Rev Rate – 450
Ball Speed – 17 mph (down-lane)
PAP – 3 ½ over, ¾ up
Right-handed

Test Environment:
42’ THS

Review:
I compared the Octane Burn to my Forza Redline since I have similar layouts on it. The Octane Burn is really clean through the front part of the lane, similar as the Tag. However, it was a stronger motion downlane. It is slightly more controllable on the backend than the original Octane which I still enjoy using.  The Octane Burn worked pretty good for me when I started to chase a little further in to where my Redline wouldn’t quite make the turn on the backend.

Likes:
Clean through front part of lane
Controlled, aggressive backend
Great when lanes open up downlane

Dislikes:
None

Summary:
The Octane Burn is much cleaner and slighter more controllable than the original Octane. Those that love the Octane, will have as much appreciation for the Burn. A little added surface for some will help control some of the backend motion with no hitting power lost. The Octane Burn has a well-deserved spot in my bag.

Octane Burn Review
« Reply #21 on: March 05, 2016, 11:33:04 AM »

Built for light to medium oil, the Octane Burn provides more length than the Forza Redline and the Venom Panic, while delivering a strong backend motion.

For the typical bowler, the Octaneâ„¢ Burn will be a great piece to switch to when the house shot breaks down and friction levels increase.  This is a ball built to play the burn. Competitive bowlers may like this new Burn edition of the Octane better than the original because the transition at the backend is slightly more controlled so shot consistency is improved.

Review:

It's time to Get MOTIVated with the NEW Octane Burn.  I drilled my new Octane burn with my favorite layout drilled 75X4.5X40. This is one the most angular balls I have ever thrown by Motiv!  This ball gets down the lane with a sharp angular motion on the back end.  This ball allows me to play the deepest part of the lane on drier/brokendown conditions without sacrificing pin carry.  Comparing to the original Octane, Original Octance gets much more length with good recovery in the back end but it more sensitive to Oil.   Octance Burn picks up sooner in the midlane while still providing great length but still very angular in the backend. This has become my new "IN" ball when the lanes get drier and drier and force me to play deep inside angles on the burn.  Another winner by Motiv, this is a must have in the bag!!!! Get MOTIVated!!!!

COMMENTS

Review: For those that know me I was/am a HUGE original Octane fan.  The quadfire core has always matched up well for my game and has rolled great for me in several balls in the past.  This version of the Octane had a lot to live up to.  And it did.  The cover on the Octane burn is slightly earlier read that the original and adds a little more control in the back end of the pattern.  For me this was a very similar amount of total hook to the original but with some added control and is able to be used on a wider variety of conditions compared to original.

Likes:That added control will come in handy when trying to use on a more challenging THS or sport conditions.  This is a must have in your bag.

Octane Burn

Motiv Bowling has introduced the New Octane Burn. I drilled the Octane Burn just like i drill all my symmetrical balls (65 x 4 1/2 x 35). The Octane Burn is for Medium-Light oil and it provides a very angular motion down lane.  It has the same Quadfire core as the original Octane but a with a the all New Helix SFP (Skid Flip Pearl) cover. This Octane Burn will provide a more consistent and readable reaction than the Octane. The most success I have had with this ball, is when I am playing straighter angles. The only negative I have seen is that, it can shoot through the breakpoint if there isn't enough a friction. I do not recommend this ball for fresh conditions.
