Too many Motiv balls ?
« on: July 23, 2015, 03:40:42 PM »
I'm only throwing Motiv now.  I ended up with more balls than I had before I switched.  I'm thinking that I don't need two of these. But when I look at it all of the balls really kind of fit.  Tell me what to get rid of or convince me I need all of these.

Raptor Talon - Rico - Sanded 500 Grit for flood
Primal Rage -  5" pin to PAP above fingers- Not as angular as I would like. Need to add a weight hole
Covert Revolt - Leverage pin down. - Smooth early rolling
Sigma Sting -  4" pin to pap . pin in ring. Benchmark ball
Venom Shock- leverage pin down- smoother benchmark.  Step down from Covert
Octane -  5" pin to PAP above fingers - polished to get through heads- most angular ball I have for deep inside.
Graffiti Tag - 5" pin to PAP above fingers - ball doesn't really do much
Ascent Pearl- polished - for dry
Rebel Tank -  pin at center grip. polished smooth hook on dry
Arctic Sniper- spare ball

I just got the Tag and tried it out yesterday. So far I love it. Length with a big backend. I can't believe how far down the lane it goes before it makes a left turn. Mine is drilled 5 inches to pap above the fingers.

The Octane is by far my least favorite. I rarely ever use it. I have many more choices.  As  I read I see that I am not the only one. I do not understand why it is still in their line.

Freddy, for those that have the Octane, the Octane is almost everyone's least favorite including myself. However, since my getting the TAG, at the moment it is a toss-up which is worse, but that could change as I am going to make a change on my TAG and see if it helps.

I was wondering the same thing.  Motiv has had it in their line up for a while now.  There are many other balls that have come and gone that didn't have as much hatred.

They might be waiting until the Redline is released to get rid of the Octane. Need something to fill that slot.

My opinion of the dislike of octane and tag. IMHO. Motive ball motions have been very smooth in comparison to some other manufacturers. These two balls are really the most "snappy" and "angular" of the line up. Most of the balls that have been listed as angular are still smoother than others out. So I think the motion for the motiv faithful is just way different than everything else.

My Octane was "snappy and angular" before changing the surface a few times to get it somewhat workable and now it still moves hard but not snappy.... Now as for the TAG, it never has been snappy and angular out of the box nor today after a couple surface changes to it. In fact out of the box, it would go thru the break point and only "wink" a wee  bit and on drier conditions wouldn't do anything at all. I have slower speed and revs on the low side of medium and that may be some of the problem, I don't know. However my style works great with the Rage, Thrash Frenzy and Primal Scream. Those 3 balls are second to none for me.

I think the angular balls don't always match up well on some styles.  If your rotation angle at release is high (come off the side of the ball a lot), then these balls will be VERY snappy for you.  Just like the other side of the lineup - say Forza - may not move enough for people who come straight up the back of the ball.

Know your release stats and match up your arsenal accordingly.
MOTIV Jackal LE .................40 x 4.5 x 40 p2.5
MOTIV Revolt Vengeance......45 x 4.0 x 50 p3
MOTIV Forza GT ..................50 x 4.0 x 70 p2.5
MOTIV Sigma Sting..............50 x 4.0 x 45 p3

You could very well be right as I don't come off the side nearly as much as I wish I could.

I do agree with what you are saying, but I tried the TAG again last night and it just wasn't there.  I could change my release and speed and get every other ball to do what I wanted.  The TAG is just an odd bird for me. Ball touches oil and it does nothing. Worse than my Octane.  Hit dry and also does nothing really.     Right now I think it will be the ball I'm getting rid of if I'm eliminating something.  Going to change the surface and see if that helps and then maybe put a hole in it to see what that does for it.

I can't speak for all of the balls in your list, but below is my experience of the balls I do have....

Primal Rage -  5" pin to PAP above fingers- Not as angular as I would like. Need to add a weight hole
Best ball in your list  :)

Octane -  5" pin to PAP above fingers - polished to get through heads- most angular ball I have for deep inside.
I have one and wouldn't buy it again  :(

Graffiti Tag - 5" pin to PAP above fingers - ball doesn't really do much
I have one and gotta agree with you there  :)

I didn't care for my Primal rage but I just put a double thumb weight hole in it and I think I turned it into the ball it is supposed to be.  The ball actually reads the lane and makes a strong move to the pocket.  Just on the edge of being what I would call angular.  Before it didn't really do much on the backend.  It is a night and day difference between how it was before.

Tossed the Primal Rage last night while practicing and I have to say that I am liking the ball more and more. I think it fits right where it should now.  Still getting used to the motion but the ball seems to scatter the pins really well when you hit the pocket.

Try 2000 grit Siaair or 2500 grit with a NEAT pad. It doesn't make the ball "snappy and angular", but does make it playable on some conditions even though there are better balls for those conditions. Anyhow that is how it worked for me.

As soon as my back gets better where I can bowl again, I am going to make a change to my grip of which I hope will help me get a wee bit more side roll on the ball. Nothing to lose in trying that.
