What did you think of Cara Honeychurch's explanation of "surface" on a ball ??

At the end she said putting surface on a ball will make it make more contact witht the lane eventually making the ball hook more, ....didnt' she really mean hook sooner ???

I thought her explanation was pretty bad.  For someone who doesn't understand the term, all she had to say was that "surface" refers to how polished or dull a ball is.  "Polished" = "little surface", "dull" = "lots of surface".

Then she could have gone into why you would want little or lots of surface to cope with different lane conditions, and the racing tires analogy.  

Thank goodness she had a visual.  At least you could see that the "low surface" ball was polished, while the "high surface" ball was dull.

Remember there was probably an edit or two done on it to fit the appropriate time...and knowing she didn't have much time to explain and that alot of people who watch aren't very knowledgable about the game.....may have tried to keep it very simple and basic.......

think someone who has done as well as Cara has worldwide knows probably a thing or two more than the rest of us about surface.....;-)

but then again.....maybe that may prove a point.....don't need to know all the crazy little things people worry about here......maybe just need to know the couple things important to your game.....and have the physical ability that Cara has .....and not worry about the small stuff...;-)..

Something else to keep in mind is that, even after being over here for the tour for  a few years now, there are still times that the Aussie to English conversion sometimes doesn't always work out  I can't comment on the segment since I missed the show (had a lunch date)...will watch for the re-broadcast later on.

And, in the eyes of some, getting the ball into a earlier roll via surface is the same as more hook.  More hook is not always a coast to coast thing.

I've seen several of these. I think one of the professional ball people from one of the companies should write out the details of a proper answer and just let the "stars" read them over the teleprompter. So far, I haven't seen anyone look good doing these, besides they seem to feel extremely uncomfortable.

And, if a viewer needs more explanation of what the commentators are saying, someone should probably write their scripts also.

WE understood it but we are supposed to.  I don't know if people that are truly unknowing about surfaces really had their question answered in a meaningful way.

I didn't see either last weeks or this weeks show. However, the "ask a pro" tips I have seen almost seem like evading the question.
There was one that CDB was asked, and her answer went all around the question, but never answered the question directly.

You mean the question about how to make the most of the two warmup shots on each lane before a tournament?

I loved it when Carolyn said, "Shoot a 10 pin or a 7 pin if you're lefty or righty."  Which pin for which hand, Carolyn??? hahahahaha

They should have let Baldo answer the surface question.  He knows what he's talking about, and he's not camera shy.  Cara looked extremely uncomfortable doing that little piece.

you sure that wasn't the cloud from me having thrown mine...after all we were right next to each other (and neither one of us was faring real well in the carry department)...
