Women’s pro tour to re-launch with USBC, BPAA commitment

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) Tour will re-launch in 2015 with a three-year funding commitment from the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) and Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America (BPAA). Preliminary plans call for a nine-event tour running from mid-summer through early fall.

“We have seen women’s bowling experience fantastic growth in the participation and skill development at the high school and collegiate level in recent years,” USBC president Andrew Cain said. “Now the USBC and BPAA are uniting to provide this talented next generation of women a professional tour to continue pursuing their passion for the sport.”

An initial framework approved by both the USBC and BPAA Boards of Directors calls for an equal investment by USBC and BPAA to support operation and guaranteed prize funds of the PWBA Tour for the 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons. Events will have a Friday-Sunday format to allow PWBA members to bowl tour stops and have flexibility for family or job obligations during the week.

“The new PWBA Tour must fit the lifestyle balance today’s women need,” BPAA President Tom Martino said. “Women shouldn’t have to choose between pursuing their dream as a professional bowler and the stability of traditional home life. We want the new tour to be an option for as many women as possible.”

The initial framework for the 2015 PWBA Tour calls for eight regular-season tour events culminating in a PWBA Tour Championship as the ninth event. The regular season will be live streamed online with a broadcast partner sought for the PWBA Tour Championship. A search will be conducted to hire support staff with USBC and BPAA providing assistance until the structure is developed.

In the coming weeks, a process will be announced to identify host centers for the 2015 PWBA Tour stops. Additional information about PWBA membership, event format and tour structure will be released in the future and available on BOWL.com.

I think it's great that they are trying to balance out their family lives with participation in tour stops, because most of the ladies that would bowl this would be either up and coming youngsters out of college (McKewan, Alvarado, Guerrero, Falbo, etc.), or those who were previously on tour (Johnson, Kulick), those who settled down to start families (Barnes, Turner, Boomershine, Hulsenberg), or both (Asbaty).

I'm interested to see how this turns out, especially since it is getting a 3-year run.

If they put it on TV, I will be watching.

I'm really excited about this because I enjoy watching the women bowl. Hopefully they air it on televison.

The dudes are tired of the women beating up on them.

I'll watch this too.

I enjoy watching them as well. The top ladies have just as much talent as the top men if you take endurance out of it.

I even prefer to watch the college and high school(Ohio has their HS bowling on TV for some reason) girls over the boys. I could do without all the screaming, chanting and clapping the girls do while bowling, but that's more of a generational thing.

Just so long as they stay off my lawn.  ;D

With my style being a classic stroker, I find more in common in style and speed with the ladies. I have been watching quite a few of the older events on YouTube.

Glad to see they are coming back.

It'll be live streamed.

With hopefully the exception being the Tour Championship, which it looks like they are looking for a broadcast partner for (ABC, CBS SportsNetwork, etc.)..

What I am hoping is that not only is that broadcast, but the winner of each event gets a spot in the TOC. That is only fair of them.

I'm not sure I agree with a spot at the TOC at all. It's a different tour. Remember the women's series a few years ago where Michelle Feldman kept making the number one seed because she was the only female power player?

You haven't seen Tammy Turner or Azarette Zetter bowl, have you? Although you had the likes of Duggan and Barette (Hulsenberg) on the tour, Taminator was the power player to beat until Feldman gave competition. Now with Zetter, and you can even add in LaGrange, and you'll have a good set of power players. You could even add Asbaty to that list, and if she decides to come out of retirement, Brenda Mack.

Besides.. this does have the makings of setting up a Wife v. Husband match; I could see Barnes coming out of retirement for this.

Good for them and good for bowling.

I've always enjoyed watching the ladies compete w/each other and there are quite a few that can flat-out throw the ball.

  Here, here!

I think it's cool the ladies will have an opportunity again, and there's a three-year commitment behind it.

I'll throw out there a couple of names to watch: Anggie Ramirez-Perea. She's was a collegiate all-America and gave Matt McNeil a run for it in a big-money tournament earlier this year (2014). She's also been picked to bowl on one of the Scroggins brothers all-lefty nationals team.

Maria Jose Rodriguez. She won the 2014 USBC Queens tournament, defeating Kelly Kulick. She was also a collegiate all-America attending the same school as Ramirez-Perea, University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
