Need some help picking a ball.
« on: August 20, 2014, 02:26:23 PM »
Hey guys, just need a little help picking a third ball. Right now I have a Hammer Trap, Bruns Nexus, and an original Thunder Road. I'm wanting to replace the the thunder road with another proto grip. I used to have a SD73 and loved it. It finally died so I gave it to friend that just started bowling. I throw the ball a little harder than most at about 18-19 mph at the pins and have a higher rev rate. However  I don't play a huge hook and don't like to. So I'm looking for a good third ball. I was looking at the Hysteria, hyper cell and sinister. I don't go to many tournaments and average between 215-220 on any given house shot. I'm leaning toward the Hysteria ATM another solid that might no be as strong as my Nexus.

Thanks for the help.

Ryan

Outcry or Uproar would be a better match if you are trying to limit the overall movement.  The balls you mentioned are all high end balls with maximum hook potential for the most part.

+1 Spot on IMO. The equipment you mentioned are mostly higher end, high performance pieces.

If you wanted to stick with a solid in the same line up (H2 I think) is the Uproar. But I could not tell you where that would be as compared to the Nexus. I like my uproar but have different stats (16.5 at the pins and lower revs).

I have seen a lot of good scores with the Aslyum. I was fortunate enough to see the Sinister in action yesterday. It does hook a lot OOB.

If you are looking for a ball that does'nt hook to much - remember cover adjustments can be made to any ball for more or less hook.  I would look at the Rumble which is a solid or an Outcry ( hybrid) or Uproar (pearl). The others you mentioned will be too much ball-- imo

I usually buy stronger balls because I do throw the ball harder, actually the kid in the tamer videos with the sinister and the hysteria throws the ball a lot like me. My Nexus is a good ball but not quite as strong as it used to be. It doesn't do to well when there is a lot of carry down unless I get the ball outside early. The trap is a good ball and I use it when the Nexus can't make it back on carry down or there is a lot of oil on the outside. I have about 200 games on each of these, I normally keep the trap at a 2000 polish and the Nexxus at 1500 non polished. So I would like something than can handle the carry down a little better. I have always had good luck with that SD73 because it would come back like a freight train no matter how much oil there was and it would go longer. When that was too much I would use the Nexxus. I can use that ball on almost any shot but a flooded lane.

So I hope this helps. Like I said I'm only bowl in one league and sub on another and maybe do like 2 tourney's a year.

Aslyum IMO then. Adjust cover accordingly. It's strong and controllable. If you plan on building a Roto Grip aresenal I would start with that piece.

Then I would consider looking at a Soul along with the ones you mentioned.

Threw a friends defiant and hyper cell. Then I bought a Hysteria and it was exactly what I was looking for, this thing rolls just like my thunder road and sd73. I brought it down to 2000 though and shot 268 with it first game and only game so far. So I never used it oob finish because it wasn't going to roll the way I wanted. It doesn't deflect and die like a lot of other balls do it keeps driving. So with me having a lot of hand and throwing it a little harder both of my 9 counts were 9 pins. My friends hyper cell would hit hard but seemed like it deflected more when I threw it. I had a chance to buy the Sinister but I think I pretty much have that ball in my Hammer trap. I had another guy throw his sinister and my trap looked stronger. So over all very pleased with this ball.
