I must be in minority - I HATE the Hyroad
« on: March 12, 2018, 07:48:22 AM »
I drilled my 3rd one, hoping that layout/surface changes and changes in my release would deem this ball a winner.  I hear everyone rage about it, so I though I must be doing something wrong......... WRONG.  It just plain isn't for me.  Maybe it can work in my challenge league when I need push and recovery with a bigger stupid angle, but how often do you see that?  I'd rather get right and stuff it anyway.

I guess my eye prefers earlier, smoother stuff.  The best Storm stuff I have is a Marvel-S, Marvel Pearl, SonIQ (this ball is stupid good), Punch Out (when I need push - another stupid good ball), all the iQ's with the low diff core.  My pro shop guys tell me it's my release, and my old school eye.  I like to get control of the midlane and the HyRoad just doesn't do it for me.  It tumbles too long and generates too much angle - ending up in over/under hell for me.  It also seems to be very unforgiving when I miss it at the bottom.

For guys that need help getting the ball down the lane, I can see how this ball could be useful ...... any other thoughts?

Ever try one with a large VAL angle drilling @ 2k surface?
Current Rotation:
PhysiX

My A game is fairly high axis rotation. To me, the Hyroad was finicky. Loved the motion, never actually scored well with it. It magnified any mistakes i made in my release or accuracy. I had a shorter pin (3”), high VAL layout on it and tried it OOB and at 2000.

I decided the layout could’ve been the issue (I haven’t liked pin down on syms for the most part) and tried a Hyroad Pearl with my go-to layout (50x5x40). Beautiful motion and beautiful through the pins... when I hit the pocket. It’s still incredibly finicky, and I still can’t actually score with it.

Meanwhile, I’ve never had a better THS ball than my IQ Tour Solid, which everyone else seems to hate (on THS especially). I guess there’s something for everyone.

Yes, If you need another ball, get one that fits the need and your style.

This is a perfect example of why you don't buy a ball just because everyone else says it's great.

I did not match up well with the HyRoad and gave mine to a teammate.  He has liked it so much, he is kicking himself repeatedly for not getting one earlier.  Needless to say, he will be getting another one.

I had a HyRoad Pearl and I've thrown my buddies HyRoad. The core lopes too much for me.

I also agree. I get trying a ball because everyone else likes it but I don't think I'd try 2 let alone 3 times

Love my Hy-Road but everyone matches up different. People rave about the IQ Tour but that was largely a wasted $150 for conditions I see and my style.  IIRC beer wasnt a fan of Quantums either. Maybe high RG that is required for 2 piece just arent his thing.  Pretty much the exact opposite myself.

Have to admit the Hyroad was hit or miss for me.  Most of the time I could not get a good mid lane read (@ 2000 grit) and the ball skidded to long before reacting.  When I would soften my release and reduce my ball speed it would hit like a marsh mellow.
I just never had the success that so many raved about.
As far as matching up to a specific ball, I know the Storm Fight never got a lot of love, but for me that ball @ 800 grit was a match made in heaven.  As the old saying goes....to each his own!

I never liked the hyroad either, the cover/core never matched up well. I do have a streetfight that's been very good at any cover prep I use. Knowing I didn't care for the cover/core of the hy road I decided to try a hy nano and the ball is pretty good. Higher rg and stronger cover of both the nano and the SF seem to work well with me.
I bought my wife a hy road and she loves it,less speed less revs.
The harder I try the harder they fall

Funny how that works, for sure. My teammate has a Hy-Road and loves it! He is a tweener! Just a few revs with moderate to slow speed. The ball hits like a freight train for him when he throws it right. For me it was...meh! Okay, but nothing to rave about.

I too, have a Fight that was given to me....that I almost gave right back to them! LOL! I did find it useful on long oil and heavy oil, though. Other than that, I don't use it much!

Hyroad and hyroad pearl were both bad core shell matchups for me.  As a lower rev low speed stroker, I didn't get much carry unless I could find a way to stay more squared up which was tough on house shots.  Now, the hyroad nano is another story.  Haven't used it on a house shot yet, but it gives my a nice look on some sport patterns.  Similar yo my Phase ll, but a little more versatile.

Same here with both Hy-Roads. I am a higher speed -to-low rev stroker and the high RG ratings on these balls did not work well for me. I threw the Hy-Road Nano, which was a tad better at picking up the midlane for me but still, not one I would have in my bag. I had the Storm Agent ( and Special Agent) and this ball was over-under, despite numerous surface changes and drillings. So, I gave up on Storm and moved over to the Ebonite brands and I haven't looked back. There can be no doubt that Storm makes good equipment, but at least out of their balls I have tried, they just do not work optimally for my style. There may be balls in the Storm line that I haven't tried (and will not), due to the scents they embed in their balls. The smells are a huge turnoff for me.

Never saw a ball that didn't work somewhere or for somebody.  Never saw a ball that worked good for everyone.
