If the hy-road is so good...
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:59:20 AM »
Why did storm wait so long to make a pearl and solid version of it? I can understand maybe having a year gap because of producing other balls, but a 4-5 year gap?

Probably because it was called the Hyroad . . specifically because it was a hybrid cover in the Road series . . I'm not actually sure why they have a pearl or solid version, doesn't make much sense.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

It's called the T-Road Solid and T-Road Pearl. They were a little forgotten about kinda like the Gravity Shift being the pearl version of the Virtual Gravity and not the Virtual Energy. I also felt naming it the Hy-Road Solid or Pearl was weird.

It's not

It makes plenty of sense when you figure that 99% of the bowling population have no idea that hy-road literally means the hybrid in the road series. Everyone just knows that they loved the ball. The naming of the solid and pearl versions are probably responsible for half of their sales, if not more.

OP you gotta be really young.  The hyroad is what started all of the buzz about hyrbids..."For Storm" balls.  Now we all know that the t-road solid and pearl were out first (really great solid and pearl releases btw)...they tried to evolve with the 'Reign and Reign Supreme' and then did a great job with the 'Victory Road solid/pearl'...the reign line did not perform to expectations, and the victory road did very well...but neither of their feedback or sales surpassed the hyroad.  Thus you see the return back, and renaming of the line to the hyroad theme.  Hell RotoGrip put out some not so great MP releases in the Bandit and Outlaw...

Every company wishes they had a 6 year ball in their product line...the hyroad is sacred, guys!

Ebi brought back the game breaker...
Ford brought back the Taurus..
LOL 2 days ago the original black berry came back!

The T-Road Solid was ball of the year before the Hyroad came along.  I had the Pearl and loved it.  Didn't care for the Hyroad actually... same drill as my Pearl... multiple surface changes.  Found it to be squirty.  Go figure!

But I agree Storm has got a lot of mileage out of the Hyroad name and actually the core itself goes back a lot longer.

Ahhh that all makes sense. Thanks guys. I never really payed attention to equipment back when all of these came out. I just started bowling when the hyroad came out actually. As for the outlaw being a lot so great ball, I beg to differ. It would still be in my bag if it wasn't falling apart around the fingers lol. I loved the control and hitting power I had from it. The only ball I have liked better than it is my primal rage.

T-Road Solid and Pearl, Thunder Road Solid and Pearl, Blue Thunder, Hot Rod Hybrid, Thunder Struck Solid and Pearl, Fire Road, CrossRoad, Eraser PBT... I think I got most of them that use a modification of the core that is found in the Hyroad.

Every company could have several multi year balls in their lineup if they wanted.

This is true.  If we started a thread about, "which ball do you wish would come back," it would be hundreds of posts long and the same ball would be mentioned several times.  There are balls that are a decade old that would still be great to have around.  X-Factor was one of my all time favorites, plus the Shock Trauma.

I got an outlaw and bandit...they rock!  My comment was not from personal experience.  They didn't sell, that's all.  They had to put up a 900 score contest to get em to move and they still didn't.  I got em both on closeout for like 70 each.. Couldn't have made a better investment.  Had an 803 out of the box...the ball was so smooth and even!

They could, yes.  Most don't sell enough to warrant them staying in production as most buyers gotta have the new "IT" ball.  I got a hyroad solid in the wings, and I know exactly what I'm getting...its going to be good!

yes definitely. game breaker....black widow solid.....resurgence......columbia had a 5 year release with that one under different names (resurgence, burst, disruption are all the same ball with different names.) but for some reason they all discontinue them and try and get that same IT factor that the original had....if you dont give people a choice to get the new ball they will still buy the old one.

It's all about marketing.  There is no reason for ball mfg to release so many balls so frequently other than to sell more product.  Ball companies can take the same core/cover, change the color and name, and sell them because people think it's new.

Honestly, this is part of what has killed bowling for the average working stiff. A 3 ball roller, shoes, ect is @$1000.00.  If the game want so dependent on equipment and a little more dependent on talent and houses quit putting out wall shots,  you might see the game return to its former glory.  Make accuracy more important than power, force people to use their damn thumb, and make spares.

This isn't unique to bowling. Look at Golf, Tennis, really any other sport. Something newer and better is always coming out (Clubs, Tennis rackets, shoes, clothing, etc.)

Even most new cars offer very small changes over the previous year’s model, as complete redesigns don't happen that often.
