If the hy-road is so good...
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:59:20 AM »
Why did storm wait so long to make a pearl and solid version of it? I can understand maybe having a year gap because of producing other balls, but a 4-5 year gap?

It's all about marketing.  There is no reason for ball mfg to release so many balls so frequently other than to sell more product.  Ball companies can take the same core/cover, change the color and name, and sell them because people think it's new.

Honestly, this is part of what has killed bowling for the average working stiff. A 3 ball roller, shoes, ect is @$1000.00.  If the game want so dependent on equipment and a little more dependent on talent and houses quit putting out wall shots,  you might see the game return to its former glory.  Make accuracy more important than power, force people to use their damn thumb, and make spares.

Well you touch on a problem that you can't completely blame on bowling proprietors. There are plenty of lanes that are empty every night in bowling centers that could have harder lane conditions like PBA Experience leagues but bowlers as a whole avoid the harder shots. They like to see inflated numbers.  If bowling centers were to put out difficult conditions in all leagues it would run people out of their houses.

In keeping with thread topic how would hyroad compare to reign supreme or reign on?

Maybe the name Hyroad meant little to those that think hybrid coverstocks are a great joke that most people keep missing.

I have no doubt its a great ball im referring to why people wouldn't assume the name referred to the coverstock. Like assuming the T-Road was a Traction cover or a Tacky cover or anything else for that matter.

The T in those "Road" series of balls was short for Thunder, because they were cores tweaked from the original Thunder Road balls, and obviously updated covers.

The Hy in Hy-Road was in fact short for Hybrid cover.

Still comes back to my point why would someone assume anything. To later release a solid and pearl version only furthers the point.

It's just marketing....period.
The Hyroad sold very well, people like it, and the name carries weight.

Right now Storm could put the IQ or Hyroad brand on anything they want and people would buy it.

Release Date: November 2008

While designing and testing the Hy-Roadâ„¢ we kept in mind that we needed to maintain the superior on-lane performance that has come expected from the Thunder Lineâ„¢ of bowling balls. Our desired outcome was to create a bowling ball that strategically placed itself in-between the T-Road Solidâ„¢ and T-Road Pearlâ„¢. What better way to do so than combine the two coverstocks, hence creating a hybridcoverstock. By utilizing the ever so powerful Inverted Fe² Technology for the weight block, we knew that we could create the mid-lane read needed to handle a medium-heavy lane condition. By encasing the weight block inside the R2Sâ„¢ Hybrid coverstock, we found the perfect balance between its two predecessors. We found the Hybrid to be a great go-to ball once the T-Road Solidâ„¢ is too much. It gives you better mid-lane control than the Pearl. The reaction can be described as the ultimate benchmark reaction, mid-lane read with a predictable hook motion.

It is called Hy-Road because it is a hybrid.  Why can't you understand this?

Everybody understands it. The op ask why they waitrd so long for a peral and solid which sent people on post about it being hybrid and in the name blah blah blah.

Why can't you understand that?

Why did Camaro have the RS, SS and Z-28? Why did Firebird have the FireHawk and Trans Am? Because they were good and they sold!

Original post
Why did storm wait so long to make a pearl and solid version of it? I can understand maybe having a year gap because of producing other balls, but a 4-5 year gap?

First reply
Probably because it was called the Hyroad . . specifically because it was a hybrid cover in the Road series . . I'm not actually sure why they have a pearl or solid version, doesn't make much sense.

Second reply
It's called the T-Road Solid and T-Road Pearl. They were a little forgotten about kinda like the Gravity Shift being the pearl version of the Virtual Gravity and not the Virtual Energy. I also felt naming it the Hy-Road Solid or Pearl was weird.

Third reply
It makes plenty of sense when you figure that 99% of the bowling population have no idea that hy-road literally means the hybrid in the road series. Everyone just knows that they loved the ball. The naming of the solid and pearl versions are probably responsible for half of their sales, if not more.

So Hy-road may be named because of the coverstock, but most people probably didn't pay attention to that because it was a play on words of high road and they just assume the ball was either solid or pearl or whatever. Then the solid and pearl version come out and literally makes less sense of the name. Which is why my point is no one should assume anything.

So people's ignorance dictates what a company meant by naming a bowling ball "Hy-Road?"
