IQ Tour on heavy oil?
« on: September 27, 2014, 08:13:25 PM »
I was wondering what your thoughts/experiences were about using the IQ Tour on heavy oil conditions? Anybody use this ball as their strongest ball in their arsenal by any chance?

I know that Marshall Kent used it (along with the Defiant Soul) in the 2013 Scorpion Open...otherwise, I'm not sure if I have seen any other videos online on heavy oil patterns. Just wanted to get your opinion before buying...thanks! My strike ball is 16.5mph/300rpm, 220+ avg.

If you go to storm bowling.com and go to the "In the Bag" section, they mentioned that Kent used the IQ Tour because the fronts hooked a little early. Its not a ball id use on true heavy oil, it doesn't change direction hard enough and its not strong enough.

Agreed, the IQ Tour solid is not a heavy oil ball.  Not enough punch on really slick conditions.

The only way the Tour is going to be viable on truly heavy is if you're going to play dead straight up the lane (no belly), and there is a ton of friction down the lane. In a case like that, I could possibly see it because the mild break point of the IQ Tour could possibly keep the ball from going sideways down the lane. Still, I doubt there will be many cases where that is a bowler's best option. That being said, I would look into Storm/Roto's numerous other true heavy condition balls to fill that slot.

To give you some perspective, the IQ Tour solid is the 4th-strongest ball I carry. It is behind my Sync, Zero Gravity, and Lucid (2000-grit matte). For me, the Tour is the "benchmark" ball in my arsenal. It rolls smoothly and evenly to help me figure out what the lanes are doing.

i could see using a tour solid on heavy oil if you really decrease axis rotation and play really straight through the heads like gene said. go up the back and let the ball dig deep early and get the core to roll

Due to its small RG differential AND the fact that most people these days are speed dominant, the IQ Tour Solid is often not the best choice for true heavy oil.

If, however, you are a rev dominant player (at 16.5 mph and 300 rpms, you are close to being rev/speed matched) OR if you wish to play very direct, then this ball could be an alternative for true heavy oil.

A ball with a high RG differential and/or a strong coverstock and/or an asymmetric core is usually a better choice for bowling on true heavy oil.

Heavy oil is useless term.  Do you mean 20ml buffed to 43 feet, or 28 ml buffed to 37 feet.  Most people would say the former is heavy oil, even though the latter is higher volume.

For what it is worth, I would use the IQ tour on the shorter pattern where I might be able to play a little further to the right.
