Punch Out vs HyRoad Pearl

Anyone throw both of these and can compare/contrast them? Too much overlap to justify having both?

I've owned both, but I didn't have them at the same time. They both use R2S pearl for the cover, but the Hyroad Pearl has the  Inverted Fe2 core while the Punch Out has the Turbine. The Hyroad's core numbers are 2.57 and 0.046 while the Punch Out is 2.55 and 0.038. Basically, all things being equal, that would mean you'd see a bit more push and a bit stronger recovery out of the Hyroad as opposed to the Punch Out. For what it's worth, that is basically how the two have compared for me. I wasn't a big fan of my Hyroad Pearl. I felt it was too long and too late for me and my game 99% of the time. Now, maybe I just wanted to use it more frequently than conditions allowed. My Punch out is just a bit earlier (still very clean up front) and is still plenty strong off the spot. I actually considered going to it yesterday at a tournament that forced me way inside, but I still liked the read of my IQ Fusion better.

In any case, to answer your original question, although you could certainly enhance their differences by drilling/prepping them differently, I still think your original thought was correct; I think there is probably too much overlap to have both unless you bag a very, very specific arsenal.

Gene,

Even though this is off topic a touch.

I find your comments on the IQ tour Fusion versus the Punch out surprising considering this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0jrjj_-1Zk

Frankly, I am a fan of both the IQ tour Solid and the IQ tour pearl but find the IQ Tour Fusion to be very spotty in the hands of the good bowlers I have seen.

Many drillers seem to want to drill this low flare core too weak and as a result it seems to wait then overreact to the slightest mistake.
Not really a fan.  I like balls that it is easy to make most bowlers look good.

Some balls currently in this list.  I have no experience with the HyRoad Pearl only the HyRoad Solid.....very sweet on oil!

Luckylefty
PS I also spotted this video where a Punch out was compared to a HyRoad Pearl admittedly with different drillings.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaamguAobwI  I believe this video confirms Gene's comments on the Punch out being slightly faster revving ball but tough to know because of the different drilling.

I agree with what's been posted. I had a HyRoad Pearl for awhile and I just wasn't a big fan of it because it just wanted to push and overreact off the dry. Mine had a layout similar to other balls I like, but with the higher rg core and pearl cover it was never quite right for me.

I have friends that like to play straight and have pretty strong revs and they are tearing it up with the HyRoad Pearl playing in the track area!

As to the IQ tour Fusion and the HyRoad (original and remakes Hybrid).  I would pick up a HyRoad 8 days of the week!  That is ME!  I have not had much luck with Hybrids as most seem to go to long for me.  My Shred It from AMF is quite a favorite of mine however but it has a lot of motor and reminds me of a HyRoad.

On the subject of pearls and fast revving cores, I love the Freakn Frantic I own many days and have a fast revving Storm Tropical Heat Purple Black Hybrid(acts like a solid), I love it!

Some like Lope, Some like rev up.  I am usually in that that latter category!

On the IQ Tour Fusion, I haven't seen a drilling like this one in our house and this guy is good.

I do like this look on the lanes!

Lucky,

I think you're right about the Fusion being spotty if you throw it in OOB condition. I found mine to be very spotty and over/under with the 1500 polished OOB surface. Once I hit it with 2000 by hand it's become my workhorse this season. I can throw it on med-heavy to medium-light conditions as long as there's a little oil up front. The further I move in with it the better it works. I also know people who liked it at 3000 as well but they have more hand than me. Personally I've never liked Storms 1500 polished OOB surface and have found it to be too spotty or over/under for me so I always change it to 2000 dull or 2000 + polish.

I also agree that if you drill the low flare core too weak it won't react or recover as well unless maybe you have hand. Mine is drilled 4x60x60 with a P3 hole and I love it after making surface changes. For reference my stats are PAP 4.5 over and 0.5 up, 275 rpm, 17 mph at pins.

Your point is well-taken, al_g. Surface changes are where it's at. If you don't like the look and/or shot shape you are getting from a certain ball, change it up. I didn't like my IQ Tour Pearl in box finish, but with a lightly-scuffed 2000 abralon, that ball was amazing. I still tear up every time I think about the moment I went down to the basement ball rack and saw the large cracks that ruined that beauty. I've used solids at 4000 plus polish, I've used pearls at 500 matte and everything in between. If you dont' like the look of a ball, buy or borrow some abralon and do some experimenting. You might be amazed at how much a ball can change with a new surface prep!

Al and Gene,

I think great comments.  I just made my 4th surface change last week on my underdrilled Ringer Solid!

That was the difference!  It worked!

Amazing how things can change!
