What are you high rev guys using on long oil?
« on: May 20, 2015, 08:21:48 PM »
Hey guys, I've been practicing post surgery in 2014 two handed and averaging around 195 now (shooting spares like crap) and really looking forward to bowling competitive again this fall. I have way too much equipment and not enough diversity in it.

I got my speed/rev rate measured, and I'm 17mph down lane and 520 rpms rotation. Axis is 5 5/8ths right 1/2 up.

I'm throwing a little mix of everything now but there's some equipment that I'm not too in love with that I have and I want to consolidate equipment into a strong 6 ball arsenal. I'm bowling a have a ball league this summer where you can get any current line Storm ball (Optimus Solid and Skyrocket excluded). I've heard nothing but good things about the Rocket, but I might as well use this shot to get something stronger for oil/longer tournament patterns.

I have the following that I plan on keeping:

Hyroad: 5.5" Pin high (My most aggressive ball, no matter how far left I get I can get this thing back)
Victory Road Pearl: 5.5" Pin Low w/ x-hole (longer and smoother than the hyroad, good on the fresh)

Gamebreaker: 4.5" Pin hgh
Gamebreaker: 2" Pin Low, lots of polish (Weakest Ball)

I'm kind of torn, I've thrown a teammate's Crux which would be a 5.5" pin high for me and do not like that lopey motion at all. I found it very inconsistent. The Marvel S, IQ Nano and Optimus seem like the best choices for something long and on the heavier volume side.

I want to know from you high rev guys what you're having success with in the Storm lineup on longer/heavier/tougher patterns?

That's why I dig the hyper cell.  Its much much more consistent.

The optimus is kinda strong...I bet it would sit nicely above your hyroad..

The Hyper Cell is probably the best choice out there if you're looking for a solid cover.  That ball has done very well.  If you want something a little weaker with a pearl cover, you could consider the Motiv Jackal.  That ball is versatile on heavier patterns and has a nice continuous motion.

I saw the Pearl Crux thrown a bit now on heavier patterns and don't exactly like the motion it offers.

MOTIV Mythic Jackal

Med-Heavy:
MOTIV Trident Odyssey
MOTIV Forge Fire
MOTIV Covert Revolt

Medium-Light
MOTIV Venom Shock
MOTIV Tribal Fire

I agree with tommy boy.  There's a oil soaked video test with the jackal that is very intriguing.

Honestly if a hyroad is your strong ball and u need performance on oil...the jackal might be your ball!

One thing I noticed when I was around 450 RPM was symmetrical equipment was more predictable and more adjustable.  Part of the reason was I felt my driller just didn't understand asymmetric drilling.  A 5.5-inch Pin-PAP is pretty far for a rev dominant bowler and is better suited for a speed dominant bowler.

With that said, long oil and heavy oil are two different things.  A lot of what has been suggested would be great for heavy oil, but on long oil that may be light in volume, you wouldn't need a "heavy-oil" ball.

What I realized on long oil, my distance I had available for the ball to exit the pattern and enter the pocket in a roll was short.  For these instances, I like balls with a quick reaction, something with a high pin (small VAL angle).  Something like a Crux Pearl or Optimus from Storm or Hyper Cell Skid or Sinister with less surface from RG.

But before you give up on asymmetrical equipment, make sure the drilling is spot on for your stats.  If not, there is no way it will perform properly.

Idk why people like the crux....it rolls worse than the vivid and sync. ...

I love both the Crux and Crux Pearl and have seen many being used and used very well.  Never had a Vivid or Sync but if popularity is a sign, then they never took off for a reason.

Lots of volume, I would go either Hyper Cell or Marvel-S. If you've gone with more revs, Marvel-S would obviously be more controllable, but every Hyper Cell I've seen has been smooth on the back.

Lots of length but not lots of volume, I would go with a Skid or maybe an Optimus with a very small val angle (that's what we used to call pin way up, right??)

i was thinking the exact same thing. my game is not as high rev as 520 but last time i measured i was at 400 and 17.5-18mph off my hand. i have found recently i need the strong core but a cover that gets length with not a lot of surface and a quick response to friction due to having 15' or less of backend to make the ball hook. i have been using a 65x4 3/4x40  totally defiant which is pin up for me on the wtba paris pattern 47' and have shot 885 and 938 for 2 weeks in my summer league. playing about 19-11. with that being said, it leads me to believe you would like the hypercell skid or crux pearl or optimus or something like that

my other point i want to make is i think the functions of your current arsenal is off. for the fresh you generally  dont want a ball like the victory road pearl. high rg pearl with length you generally want for the transition and something like the gamebreaker for the fresh. low rg solid. early and smooth benchmark type reaction to read the lane. that 4.5" GB should be pretty strong for that high of a rev rate to be able to use on the fresh medium length patterns. then  go to the hyroad as you start to move left and the GB gets lazy. then ball down to the victory road as the burn sets in when you need length and less flippy reactions.

my next point is arsenal construction. i put together 6 balls for a sport arsenal. these choices will be based on what patterns i see the most (medium length patterns). then i have 1-2 balls specifically for long patterns and 1-2 for short patterns. the short and long balls come with me if im going blind to a tournament but not into the center. once i see the pattern graph or get into practice and see my ball either not wiggle or hook at my feet ill go out to the car. also when choosing the 6 balls, its important to have a logical progression of reaction strength and shapes. joe slowinski wrote a great article on this theory if you go to his website.

lastly i will give my suggestion for your 6 balls. with your rev rate i dont think you need a super strong HP ball like a hypercell or crux. straighter is greater!:

4.5" GB fresh/IQ tour solid
blur solid/viral solid with surface. strong ball for the fresh with more shape downlane
hyroad
victory road
freeze/cyclone/deep freeze-ive always been a fan of these balls for the late transition
urethane-could double as a spare ball as well

sorry to write a novel here but i wanted to share all of my knowledge on this topic. grow the sport through education

As a long time two hander let me chime in.  My specs are 18mph, 540 rpms, and 5.5 over by 3/4 up PAP.  I have noticed that symmetricals are way more versatile for me.  Asymmetricals I can only use on heavy volume when I can play way to the outside.  If I try to move in; the ball goes more forward at the breakpoint and not enough sideways to carry corner pins.

Here is my suggestion.  First is take the Gamebreaker and rejuvinate it and put the cover at 2000 abralon no polish and try that on fresh oil.  If that is not enough; then I would suggest something like a MeltDown.  Even though it is a asymmetric; the low intermediate diff will make the ball more driller friendly and more versatile in regards to layouts.

I am telling you now that unless you are bowling on 45+ feet of oil; you wont need a super high end hook monster simply because you are rev dominate.  If you were 20 mph and 520 rpm that would be different.  But at 17 mph; you wont need it.

Here is my current arsenal:

Gamebreaker 2 - 70 by 5 by 35 pin up, no weight hole
Arson Low Flare Solid - 2 inch pin to PAP, no weight hole
Violent Eruption - 50 by 5 by 50 pin up, weight hole on P4
Deep Freeze - 45 by 5 by 30 pin up, weight hole P4

My GB, Violent, and Deep Freeze make a potent 1-2-3 combo for most conditions outside extreme heavy oil.  If you have any other questions; feel free to ask away.

FWIW int. diff of .004 doesnt count as asymetric. anything under .008 has shown to have no significant effect on ball motion and should be treated as symetrical.

All good suggestions. I do like the idea of just going with a step up from the Hyroad and not going overkill with their biggest ball. The IQ Tour seems like such a great ball that can be used on anything for the high rev guys and this may be the last season to get it before it gets discontinued. I think I'm going with that or the Nano.

With Bowl Expo coming up soon I can't wait to see what else is coming out. Storm is releasing a special edition anniversary ball at the expo. One can wonder.
