Purple Ice Executioner
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
The Purple Ice Executioner is designed for the more demanding conditions in tournaments and "sport" leagues.  it is not designed to be a snappy ball or a monster hooker for that matter.  It's like a "urethane on steroids" and the best characteristic is CONTROL.  On spotty, wet/dry, or conditions with out-of-bounds, this ball allows you to play a more even and controlled shot.  While the competition is finishing around, you'll be able to play a more comfortable line with confidence and consistency.

I've been putting off this review, trying to decide if it's the ball or me, but I've decided to put down what is going on with mine.

This one is 15lbs, and had right at 3 oz topweight if memory serves me correctly.  Pin above ring, cg in palm.  On non-flaring stuff, I track right by the finger and thumb holes with above avg revs and avg speed.  Box condition is very dull, and they are right about one part of the "urethane on steroids" claim - it likes to dig in early and keep going.  I found it started moving before getting to the arrows unless there was a lot of oil out there.  True, it is not snappy, but it arcs very hard for me.  This is on a house shot, which is not what the ball was designed for.  However, I got to a 41 ft flat pattern and discovered the ball hates any carrydown.  After about 3 frames, it was sliding past the breakpoint.

OK, after that, I read that many like it polished.  So I shined it up, and it helped the length tremendously.  When I find a line that it works on, it will hit hard and carry well.  The problem is, I can't stay in the same area for more than 3 or 4 shots before it either 1) grabs more lane and plows through the nose for a nice big split or 2) catches carrydown and slides through the breakpoint.

Recently, I just had more top weight taken out of the ball, and this seems to create less of an arc.  Have not thrown it enough to tell if I really like this change or not.

Not trying to bash Visionary, as this is the only ball from them I have tried.  When the stars align and I get it to go where it needs to go, it does hit well and carries well.  However, I feel at this point that this ball and my style do not mix well.

I got this ball drilled 4 1/2 x 4.  I use this ball on a 42 ft. pattern.  This drilling works great.  At the breakpoint is sharp but has a controlled backend.  I can play down and in or swing it and it hits the pocket.

Since I started throwing Visionary, I have been happy with the performance from their equipment. The Purple Ice Executioner I received from Visionary came with a 2 - 3 pin with a 2.5 top weight, just like I asked.
Ball Specs.
Weight 15.20
Pin 2 - 3 inch
Top Weight 2.5 oz

From other reviews with Visionary's equipment, I was looking for a ball to fit in - between my Burgundy Gryphon and Green Gargoyle. The Burgundy is set up to roll quicker and arc while the Green with the same layout and factory surface skids through the front part of the lane and jerks on the backend.

Before drilling this ball, I altered the surface by using Track's Clean and Sheen and 3 - M Finesse to keep the strong grit but provide some skid through the heads.
The layout of this ball was a 5 by 5 layout( One of my Favorite Layout) with the pin under the ring finger to achieve my goal.
The surface I tested this ball on was 38' oil pattern on old wood with a burned track at the 8 board. This ball rolled well in the oil and when I threw it out to the burned track, the ball did not jerk ball but gave a decisive roll back to the pocket.
After bowling with this ball, I accomplished ( with the help of the wiser head in the proshop) what I was looking for in this ball.

Thank you Visionary!

Older review I never got around to writing here...sorry

Urethane on Steroids!
Lane Conditions: Medium-Heavy Oil
Typical Conditions: Variety of Shots
Type of Lane: Combination
What part of the lane did you play? Third Arrow
Did the ball track out? Normal
Weight of bowling ball: 16
Surface of bowling ball: Factory/Box
What grit was the surface of the ball? 600
Likes: Control, eveness, smooth roll down the lane, no over reaction, and no jumpiness!
Dislikes: Early roll out if you're fishing for oil, and some skating if your fishing for oil!

Urethane on steroids!!!

Specs: 16lbs pin out of 3-4", don't remember the top weight, and it's drilled with the pin 1" over and .5" to the right of the ring finger. The CG is in the center of the palm in order to put the MB in strong position.

Visionary was right on the money with this baby because it takes care of the S*#@ shot you might bowl on following open play.

It will roll true and continuous through oil, early and maybe just a bit too early if there isn't enough head oil to get to the mids. The reaction shape is that of a sweeping arc half moon type. It's pretty aggressive once it starts moving the other way, but definitely needs dry to turn over. Also watch out for oil in the backends, the ball will skate a little making carry an issue. I achieved better results playing with a high track instead of spinning it, the ball really didn't react right to my lower track release.

Specs: 15#, top wt. 2.43, pin: 2-3", polished surface (not sure of grit)

Layout: Pin above the ring finger, CG kicked right a bit, no extra hole.

I have to say that's the grittiest 600 i've ever seen out of the box.  My driller insisted on polishing it before he'd drill it.

I will plan to include a more comprehensive review of this ball after I get more opportunities to use it. I will say this, though.....Find some oil for the Purple Ice cause it's gonna want it. Those particles are just gnarly.
This ball is more aggressive than i expected it to be and currently sits in the bag as my oil ball cause it hooks too much for any med oil conditions i have seen lately.  I almost wonder if it hooks more than the Granite GargoyleFrom what I have thrown with it, i can tell you it rolls great. Clean through the heads, and then the surface and dynamics take over and make this ball work for scoring.

If you have a gap in your bag for those slicker conditions, grab a Purple Ice Executioner and enjoy the rewards.
