Title: 44 Magnum replacement
Post by: wulfpackbwlr on March 03, 2009, 11:52:21 PM
Ok guys the time has officially come that I must replace my Dyno-Thane Vendetta 44 Magnum.  The pair I was bowling on last night decided it needed to take 4 different chunks out of my track and it is more than likely being replaced.  So what in the Global or AMF line is the closest match up to this ball?

In basic performance, my best guess is the Maniac, with a finer finish, maybe 2000 grit, but I'd bet the 44 had slightly more flip/backend to it, more in the basic nature of the original Break. But you and your driller might have to tweak the drilling of the Break to get it to emulate your 44 more closely.
Pick your poison.

Is the 44 Magnum a solid, pearl, or hybrid?  I might consider the AMF Code, if you want something smooth, or the Nkryption Code if you want something with a bit more backend.

As Charlest suggested the Maniac could be an option.  I have one drilled 5 x 3-1/2", pin up, no weight hole.  Ball was too early and too aggressive in OOB (1000 Abralon), so I have taken it to 2000 Abralon.  Ball is very smooth off of the dry.

I tend to differ with Jeff on this one. The 44Mag, had a hybrid cover, 1/2 pearl + 1/2 Solid, core is lower to mid rg 2.46 -.042 rg diff

I believe the Code with a 2.47 rg core -.048 rg diff, with a hybrid cover would be more of an equal match, possibly even the N'code with a slightly stronger veneer, little stronger backend motion. Take it with a grain of salt and over the shoulder, I have been wrong 4 times before, just ask my four former wives !!! LOL

Cover is a hybrid on the 44.  I honestly am not sure of the layout or else I'd post that.  I'm looking for something close to a direct replacement or perhaps a touch weaker.  I have used the 44 for a dryer lane/ broken down pattern ball for the past few years.

Layout according to what I see is 3-4 inch pin, pin about ring, cg out 2 inches with about a 3/4 in diameter, and 3 or so inches deep so I'm thinking it had decent top weight.  I know this isn't exactly much help but this is what I have to go off of...

Since the Code is discontinued (still can't believe this) AND since he asked in a 900Global forum, I picked, what was to me, the choice(s) available that seemed to make the most sense.

In the AMF choices, I also think the 44 falls between the Code and the N-Code.

Of course, if he sanded a Villain to 2000 abralon, he might be closer still .... (very similar core).

Any other manufacturers you'd like to include in this "contest"?

off the top of my head, the S-40's would be close,...the Vendettas were touch weak, but were great balls,..RIP my friend.

I'd say a Maniac with something similar to a 5 x 4 layout and take the surface to 4000 abralon or 2000 w/ light dose of polish

why not go with an AMF villian?
I'm pretty **** sure Phil actually said this ball was the 44 magnum minus the pearl.  so it should be pretty darn close then right?

The Villain is the same ball as the 44 mag. Core and cover, Mag was a pearl villain is a solid version, 2000 or 4000 abralon plus polish should get you really really close

That answer should make a few 44 MAG people very happy

Ok so it sounds like the Villain is the winner.  Thanks a lot Phil.  Thanks to everyone else for all the recommendations as well.

Villain is VERY impressive.  I got mine last week and only rolled 2 games after the shot broke down quicker than normal.  Very smooth through the front with a strong back end read.  The hit & carry were downright phenomenal!  I cannot believe I waited so long to purchase this gem.  For those of you that like the look of the Break solid and want to transition to the Villain, I recommend a slightly longer Pin to PAP than your Break.  In hindsight I would probably have gone 5" on my Villain instead of 4".  Regardless...still a fantastic piece!!

As the first one whose answer was closest to Phil's, where is my laurel wreath?

With all this talk about a Villian Solid and polishing it up...why not just buy a Villian Pearl?

Villain Pearl isn't USBC approved, to my knowledge.

I see that now...oh well...if you want a perfect replacement the villian pearl is the answer...just not the usbc approved answer

I asked Nick at 900 Global about it not being approved and he said that there just waiting on the paperwork but it is going to be approved. Might want to ask Eric too!

Kevin I've even talked to you on here before.  You're starting to get a memory like me now.  Still waiting to see for sure whether the ball is going to get replaced or not.

AMF Villain all the way. Very, very close to the 44 mag. Won a few bucks with the ball .
