Have a faithful black ops drilled weakish, 5 1/2x 5x3. I keep it at 1000 and use it for my heavy oil, volume ball. Had good success with it at nationals, bj’s in Syracuse. Well it has a ton of games now. Was thinking of putting it on my spinner and resurfacing it to oob finish and using it for mediums, and house shot. Want to get a new, fresh black ops (great deals online for black ops around $100). Was thinking of going a little stronger with the drilling, say 4x4x2 with same 1000 surface for heavy oil just like current one. Do you think it will be too strong, I definitely don’t want it to puke out. What are your experiences with the ops, break core with strong drilling’s for oil? Here are my specs! Pap 5 3/8 over up 7/8. Tilt 16 degrees. Rev rate 320. Ball speed 14 mph. These specs are from the powerhouse bowler I’d test. Appreciate your global 900 expert opinion.

Ok, had to refer to my dual angle to storm layout conversion chart.
I like the layout for heavier oil (prepare for flare!) and surface prep is good too. I'd normally let the user know that pin ups (in my experience) can be incredibly torquey down lane, but the 1k will smooth that out. I dig it!

Thanks for the quick response doom. Not so concerned about the angularity. My 5 1/2 inch pin one is real smooth with it at 1000. I was just concerned about the stronger drill with more flare burning up with my slower speed. I’ve heard that moving the pin close to the Val in a strong asymmetrical ball will make the ball continue more through the pins, along with more flare. I find that interesting. Don’t know if anyone has experienced this. Appreciate the help doom. Going to order my second black ops. What the hell, for $100 bucks you can’t go wrong. I was looking at the radical conspiracy as well. Almost looks like same core as the breaks. And ball gets good reviews. But I already know what the black ops is for me, and I lIke it. Plus it’s a better value for the buck. Best value in bowling as far as I’m concerned.
-
Well, remember that even though S70 is strong, it's not pukey strong. I think you're going to love it!
-
I'm not doom, but A buddy loves his Black ops with a 4x4x2, that's typically my strong assym layout..
Do it!

Thanks billdozer.. I not only value doom’s expertise, but all of your opinions on this site. Very informative. Done deal, ordering my black ops from buddies pro shop tonight. $109.95. Free shipping. Great price, for a great piece, how can you go wrong? Like I said earlier, ops series has to be the best bang for the buck in bowling. Just my opinion.

Hear Hear! :)

Just out of curiousity, Doom recommended the Honey Badger and it works great for me. What is a strength comparison for the black ops from another brand. Are we talking Jackal Ghost, Idol, Crux prime.
-
All surfaces being the same, Black Ops is comparable to the Code Black or Conspiracy, motion wise.
-
I have all three. Conspiracy is a little more angular and a touch stronger overall. Black ops and code black are close if you hit the code black with some surface. I’ve found the black ops to be more versatile and takes to surface adjustments best of the three.
-
How does the Tactical Ops compare to the Black Ops or Code Black?

How does the Tactical Ops compare to the Black Ops or Code Black?
Tactical will be a bit stronger, but I'd stick with a Black Ops with surface. There's something about the Tactical that doesn't please me.

A Break core ball that doesn’t please Doom... :o

You know, I'm all about that core. But something about that cover makes it very forward off the spot. I love the idea of a pearl Break, but I think the cover is too strong for it's intended use. 10 times.out of 10 I'll take a Black Ops over that kind of reaction.

So, if I want my Black Ops to be like my Code Black, I should use the same layout?

So, if I want my Black Ops to be like my Code Black, I should use the same layout?
Yep, but please break the surface, and then repolish it to your liking. (Good practice for any ball, really)

Thanks for that (this) doom. That clears up an earlier question on here that I asked some time ago about surface.

My pleasure, sir!

So I need to revise my previous statement. I talked to some fellow staffers, watched some videos, and came to a realization.
The Tactical isn't a bad ball. It's how people drilling them makes it look. Fast response drills on them look like crud, because the thing sees the friction so hard, it just goes forward. But the ones that are slower transition look like the bomb.
So don't drill your Ops with small Val angles. :)

Any suggested layout? I’ve redrilled mine twice now and still don’t like the way it looks.

What were the 2 layouts?

I have drilled 2 Tacticals. One pin over bridge just like my Code Black, was trying to copy. Other one was pin in palm with really deep thumb hole trying to copy my old favorite the Break Pearl (Rico). Never liked either one. Sold the pin in palm one. Pin over bridge one hit with Reacta Skuff and like it, but, way stronger than I wanted it to be.
-
Doom, you were spot on. Drilled Black Ops like Code Black, broke cover with 4,000 pad and had a very similar look to Code Black.
May have to order another for stash.
Thank you!

Tactical does NOT roll like the old Break Pearl. Personally, I'd like to see S71 pearl on it, see if it doesn't get so pukey downlane.

Another option if you want a pearl with a break core- Radical’s Conspiracy Pearl. It’s not a 900 Global, but that core has an uncanny resemblance to the break core. Drilled a Conspiracy Solid at 50*5*65 and the Conspiracy Pearl at 60*4.5*40 and it’s been a great 1-2 punch!
-
Is the Black Ops earlier than an Inception Pearl? And possibly later than a Halo?
Perhaps...this is a good...GAP FILLER!

Earlier? Oob? Maybe. Too close to tell. S74 pearl is more responsive downlane than S70 solid but S70 is the R2S of the Global line.

Alright, that's my summer toy then :-D. Imma get one and make it 4k and be a happy camper.
-
The black ops rolls best for me with that factory polish knocked off. I’ve used it at 1000 for heavy oil. Ball is so versatile. I think you will love it at 4000. Much smoother than oob.

That's perfectttt. I honestly love R2S cover, and I'm a *huge* fan of the IQ Tour. If the cover is similar, I'm game with a bigger core in a smooth piece. And honestly, Global's pieces that are purple and/or black seem to roll best!
-
Love my iq tour also. Black ops with surface will be a similar smooth motion to the iq tour, only stronger overall. Least that’s what it is for me, and my game.
-
I never use any Ops (Break core) without surface. Honestly, I could do a Covert and Black 50*5*65, Covert at 2k, Black at 4k, and a Shadow 40*4*30 oob.
Btw, shadow is the only Ops I'd still to transition fast because urethane.

@Doom, I have a Black Ops that I love drilled at 46*4 1/4*60 and I have a Covert Ops NIB that I was thinking of drilling up. Would you recommend using the same layout or not? If not what would you go with? PAP is 5 1/4 right and 1 1/8 up

I would try 70*5*30 for a different look personally!

What surface do you keep the Black at and what kind of motion are you looking for?

I typically bowl on a house shot in league. My BO has a out of box finish (not sure how to change the surface).

Personally, I like the layout on the Black in the Covert, just keep the Covert at 2000 (see your pro shop for proper cover maintenance) and use it when they're fresh, then step in and use the Black when the Covert starts to leave corners.
