Going to start bowling in a league again real soon, and decided I should update my equipment. I've currently got the original Dynothane Element and the Vendetta. The Element was my go to ball, and the Vendetta for dry lanes (although it was probably always a little too strong for that). Lately I've been struggling with the Vendetta hooking too early and too much.
Since three balls is probably not in my budget, at least not early on, I'm looking for two balls that cover the widest range of lane conditions with the smallest (or no) gap in the middle. Given that I dont intend to bowl in tournaments just yet..my assumption is that I wont see true heavy oil or no oil at all.
Given the fact that I always loved Dynothane, 900 Global seemed the way to go (although anyones take on Storm, Particularly for the weaker ball, would be appreciated as well). I was thinking the Break Out and the Lunatic, but was afraid that the Lunatic might be a little too strong as well. At the same time I'm afraid to go all the way down to a Link, as that could leave me a gap in the middle.
Any suggestions? Not real technical on bowling terms...but I averaged just under 200 4 years ago. I'd guess I'm a medium ball speed tweener (16-17 mph), fair amount of revs but not as much as the young kids I see on my sons bowling team.
Additional information is that price is a concern, but a secondary one. If a mid-priced ball works I dont HAVE to have the top of the line. Also appreciated how long the Dynothane's lasted, so that is a big concern as well Would prefer balls that have a controlled reaction as opposed to a hockey stick.

Also look at the AMF offerings. 900Global is pouring/designing for AMF and they really should both be looked as when putting together a well rounded arsenal.
I don't think you can go wrong with the Break Out. Same as the original Break. For me that ball is as close to a benchmark ball as I've found. I'm slower speed with lower revs and can use it on most conditions (except ultra dry).
If you liked the Vendetta, you might also try to find an AMF Villain - same core as the Vendetta. Recently discontinued, so you may be able to find a deal.
I haven't used the Lunatic, but should be a good ball. Probably a little earlier and smoother arcing type reaction.
Also might want to look at the AMF Clutch - excellent performance for the price!

From what I have been seeing the Clutch and Clutch Pearl would make a great 1-2 punch for someone on a budget.
Another good combo is the Fast and the Furious from Storm.

the Lunatic is still going to be a bit strong
the Link is not going to be too weak
it still covers a decent amount of area on the lane
I would go with something like the Break Out or Break Point
and a Link
or look into some of AMF's stuff as well
the same person that owns 900 Global owns AMF also and they are produced and poured by the same people

if you really expect to see light to no oil I would suggest not getting a true med oil ball just yet until you actually see how strong these new balls are compared to 4-5 years ago.. I wouldn''t let the proshop guy talk you into the lastest greatest ball either.. get a couple lower end balls first (won''t be as expensive either)..
900/global -- lunatic and a link
amf300 -- clutch and a resin hype
seismic -- epicenter and a desperado(balls are sorta pricey)
storm -- furious and a fast
storm -- t/road solid and a t/road pearl(if you can find them)
roto grip -- nomad and a nomad pearl
these are just a few to start looking into, there are tons more like columbia, hammer etc. etc..

The Break Out and Lunatic would be a good 1-2 punch. The Clutch and Clutch Pearl would be an excellent 1-2 punch. If your only seeing light oil with no chance of anything more, than I would go with a Villain and Link, or the Hype line by AMF.

Looking at a two ball lineup you may for med. light to light oil I would strongly consider AMF's Villain and Pearl Heist, they have been money for me on this type of shot. The Heist Pearl was a limited production ball, but do not let that discourage you from looking at one.

I have the Bounty Hunter (solid & pearl), the Break Out, and the Lunatic. I would definitely get the Lunatic for the medium to light oil and the Break Out as your first out of bag ball. I totally agree with earlier posts calling the Break Out a benchmark ball.
