Title: Behind the Break ...
Post by: Jeffrevs on March 24, 2009, 01:38:36 AM
Hey all,..
I'm looking at maybe getting my brother a ball to go behind his Break solid.

The obvious is the pearl, but I'm going to say that's too close and a little more separation would be better....so.....

Do you go to something like a polished or control drilled Maniac, or a Creature, or a Link?  I'm thinking Creature or Creature Pearl

Now, I don't have his specs and/or how the ball is drilled, but he's a lefty tweener that plays up the boards ....

That's a tough one there...I love my Break Pearl, but I've been shooting the lights out lately with my Maniac.

Unless you tame the Maniac cover you really won't be "going under" the Break...it'll just be a different path to the pocket.

If he likes his Break, I'd say go with the Break Pearl.  The Creature Pearl is a pretty good ball, but it's more than just a step down from the Break...it's a whole different creature (ha-yuck).

I would say a Creature Solid Drilled 5x4 or 4x3 should fit nicely, or a Maniac  drilled  5x4 with the pin up and maybe the surface taken up to 2000 or 4000 .

Definitely the Maniac.  Mine is drilled 5" x 3-1/2", pin over ring, surface at 2000 Abralon it is my benchmark piece.  One of the best I have thrown.

I would actually look at the Code.  For a good control ball with better length and solid back end motion.

Break 2.489/ .058 diff
Code  2.47/ .048 diff

hope this helps...

I have thrown both the Maniac and the Creature Pearl, but never the creature.
If you drill a Maniac like others have said pin up, surface prep to 2000 or higher, with maybe a touch of compound or polish to fit nicely under the break.
My CP has a very weak drill pattern with oob coverstock and is very close to the same reaction as my Maniac.
The link can also be a nice choice here just depends how much under the break you are looking.

I am seconding the Code, it would have a similar motion as the breaks, with a touch more control, still has a nice backend.

Mine is a good step down when a solid reactinve is getting to be to much. almost perfect step down, stay same spot and same target and i am flush in the pocket.

This ball is one of my favorites, a long time keeper.

Thanks again all ....

I'd lean toward the solid instead of the pearl just because I know he prefers smoother ...

I must keep the Code in mind too,...

how is your brother's break solid laidout?? if you are looking for a step down and he really likes his break solid, you could always drill another solid and change the layout.. I myself really like my 1st break solid oob dull(pin down 4-7/8 x 3-5/8 x 2-1/2)so I drilled another break solid oob with extender polish(pin up 5 x 5 x 2)really like this one more!! when my 1st one starts burning up too early I can go to the shinny one and it gives the same target area(about a 4 board adjustment with my feet though/same target area) but more entry angle to carry better.. just a thought in a different dirrection instead of trying a different ball.. I find that it is easier to drill another ball that is the same that you really like then it is to do something different and maybe find another ball that is totally different to get what you want out of it.. if your brother likes the soild break try another one with a different drilling on it with some polish.. sorry for rambling on so, good luck on your adventure.. slashrr69

I rolled the Break solid as my primary ball for most of this season.  Due to a recent shot change, the Break Point matches up better for me.  However, I too struggled to find a ball between my Breaks and Link.  At first I tried TWO Break pearls one drilled identical to my solid and a 2nd with a longer pin to PAP.  At first they were ok but I never got a consistent look as I did with the solid.

After reading multiple endorsements on this forum, I then opted for the AMF Villain instead of the Awakening.  The separation is definitely there from my Breaks and I can change balls with a slight foot adjustment and still have that same 900G carry.

Give the Villain a look...it's a fantastic piece.

Here's a second plug for the Villain. It is a great piece and a solid step down from the Breaks.

Thanks again all!

Something else to throw into the fray, ......

My brother will use his Break into the second game, and finish w/ whatever the second ball is,...so it's not going to be an "inbetween ball" ...it's a 1-2 punch for a mixed league, ...nothing fancy

Kind of a ball to pick up while standing in the same spot...

A weaker solid. Creature or code in my opinion. A pearl may be to snappy. Or possibly even the new link. Looks like a solid to me even though global doesn't specify it that way. With a solid I think you will have a few more surface adjustment options as well.

No layout suggestions here, just ball ideas.

For me the Break is quite a bit stronger than the Break pearl.  You can smooth it out with surface adjustments.

There is also the Code, Heist, Villain, and Awakening.

The Awakening for me is a very smooth rolling, even and controllable pearl that has a mild finish.  The Villain can also have the same reaction shape depending on surface and layout choices.  Both balls have a 45 friction rating.

Even though the Code and Heist are disco'd or heading that way they are also good choices for a step down.  For me the Code is a smooth rolling ball with a good midlane and a strong finish.  It isn't skid snappy but a strong arc-ing ball.  The Heist can be adjusted to fit many conditions it's rep speaks for itself.

I'm not big on the Creature, it either rolled too early on light oil or skid for days on oil.  Surface adjustments didn't help it at all.  I could be tempted to take a look at the Creature pearl though.

The Link is a good ball but it's probably a bit too far apart from the Break.  With it's MB DIF of .005 that's barely noticable, and it's weaker cover particularly doesn't like more than lighter medium oil.

**Some of these can be more than a step down though.**

The Red/Black link would make a lot of sense because it's asymmetric..and KOTM could do some magic stuff with it ...we'll see....

I would watch out with the Link.  While it's stronger than some would like, I personally cannot stand in the same location as my Break mid way through game 2 with my Link.  Sure the pin is 2" farther but still...I would tend to look at something a bit stronger.

Still leaning toward the Villain and possibly the Code which I own but have yet to drill.

Well, turns out that the Link's RGs are too high (from KOTM) and that our best bet, for what he needs, is a Creature, ..so we're going to go with a Creature Solid ...drilling hasn't been determined, ..but I'll fill in when it happens.

Thanks to all who responded w/ ideas!

Jeff,

One other note: the Creature solid is bascially a polished Pulse, one of the most pin crushing balls of its day. The right surface and the right drilling can be devastating.

Pin is low and just to the inside of his ring (lefty) ..45x5x70 ..
