best ball for the burn
« on: December 03, 2018, 01:55:59 PM »
Ok ok, so I was looking at getting the xmas boost, and Doom gave me some good advice.... then i started looking and saw the bubble gum boost and it looked pretty cool.  but then somebody said they've heard mixed reviews about both.

then somebody mentioned the after dark pearl is great.

Now i'm not sure which way to go?  anyone had more than one of these? or one that could give an opinion?

I'd say it depends on what you mean by burn and what reaction you're trying to get.

The After Dark is smoother due to lower differential and weaker cover than the Boosts. The Boosts offer a lot of performance for the price and seem to do well as a ball to move in and use the friction on the backend. I believe Doom highly recommends going longer pin-pap on the Boosts

If you're looking to cover boards while getting the ball pretty clean down lane, then a Boost with a longer pin to pap is the answer. For me, my pearl drilled 5*35 is super clean, and doesn't stop when it makes the turn, but it's not a "burn" ball, it's more of a fifth or sixth game need to go left to right without the ball puking early on me kind of reaction. When something stronger like a HB is reading too soon, I can ball down and get the same look, only for less volume.

Now, I will say if you go with a 2 inch pin to pap on a Boost, it will be much smoother. Daria used one with a 1 inch pin to pap at the US open, I believe, and she was able to stay right for a good while.

Now, if the heads are fries and you're looking to get it down the lane as effortlessly as you can, After Dark Pearl. S30 is just so much easier to get down the lane.

i'm not a board coverer haha.

and maybe burn was a bad choice of words.  on the fresh, the house i bowl likes to lay down oil inbetween the 3 boards and leave the outside dry.  I'm looking for a ball i can play up the gutter with.

but with the way it is now, my hyroad overreacts going straight up the outside, i can easily swing out to it but i want something that'll give a different look going down and in as opposed to covering some boards out and then back in

I Have had a lot of dry lane/ short oil balls over the years.  After Dark might be one of the best ever.  Not only does it let me stay relatively squared up outside as a house shot breaks down,  it gives me way more pop if I have to move in to 15 board.

Solid.  Also, someone mentioned the Ride.  I loved that ball out of the box on one specific house shot, but never had much luck after that.

Chiming in on this topic... Also interested in a good ball for hooking heads or just attempting to keep my angle in front of me. My weakest ball is the Desert Ops and has been a gem!

Is the After Dark Pearl noticeably easier through the heads? I've been debating on this or a Shadow Ops. The concern with the shadow appears that it may need some oil in the heads. Mix reviews and tough to decipher most staffers reviews as most just throw on to paper what I can read in the marketing of the ball.

Quick specs: 5" right x 1/2" up (PAP), 16mph (break point), 450ish rev rate, moderate axis rotation, low tilt.
Just an unbiased bowling enthusiast trying too enjoy the game with each set.

If the heads are fried, no Shadow Ops. It is 80% urethane and is at 1000 oob. It's a good control ball with some hit, but will check at your foot if the heads are blown up.

Now, Desert Ops is S70 pearl, which makes the cover strong, but the core is weak(ER). If you need more push, S30 will will definitely give it to you. A long time ago, I used to carry my S75 and Link with me, and that was mostly it. When they got chopped up, my Link would easily push another 6 to 7 feet where the stronger cover would check early.
