Black Eagle...wow
« on: October 25, 2012, 08:22:43 PM »
I picked up a practically new Black Eagle (thanks Swaff) a few weeks ago.  I finally decided to keep the original layout, just adjust finger pitches and overall span.  The layout turned out to be approx 60 x 5.5 x 40 for me.  Pin above fingers, mb right of thumb.  I took the surface to 1000 abralon, and polished with the yellow Elite polish.

I subbed in league, so figured I would give it a try.  On the first shot, I didn't think the ball was ever going to turn over...  It kept going, and going, and going, until finally it decided to make its move.  The ball flipped and absolutely made a left turn.  I haven't seen this type of hockey stick reaction in a very long time.  As long as I stayed far enough left on he lane and gave the ball room, it literally recovered from anywhere.  However, a few times, I got behind transition and left some interesting "designer" splits.  One frame left a 3,4,6,7,9,10....
As the night went on and the lanes bridle down a little, reaction smoothed out a little, and was easier to keep up with and control.

Overall, very angular reaction, and quite strong.  I can't imagine throwing it on a tougher pattern like USBC nationals..... At least with the current surface...I think it would be way too over/under...I assume it is much more controlled with a matter surface.  I will definitely need to play with surface a little to get the ball to smooth out some.

If you need help on the backend, this one might be worth trying.

S^2,

Easily one of the best balls ever made. The fact that the Black Break was the first high performance ball from them, and it still competes with their high end stuff 5 years later speaks for the design.

IMO it is the ultimate ball, so versatile, THE BEST CORE & COVER COMBINATION they have ever produced. Mine at box still recovers and covers more boards than any of the high end equipment they have produced. Takes cover changes so easily, to change shape and area you need to play as well as any cover !!!

I agree.  Best ball they have ever made and one of the best balls ever.  Reads the lane so true and reacts so consistently.  Try one pin down.

I believe Matt McNiel the record setting lefty using this ball quite often is usually pin down under his ring finger on this ball.

Creating a simple movement while applying a nice firm speed.

Saying this from videos I have seen of him and this ball.

I took the cover to 4000 grit abralon to smooth reaction some.  I saw almost no noticible difference in the backend!  The ball may have been a touch stronger overall (no polish now), but still length and backend.

If you a looking for a ball that finishes from inside angles, this is it!  It is probably one of the stronger balls I have ever thrown, and certainly one of the strongest balls on the backend of the lane.

I have been obsessed with this core since i first drilled the break pearl. How one of these things hasn't won ball of the year is beyond me. I've had the break pearl, break, break s75, break out, and now black eagle. Its the best core I've ever had in a ball. I an honestly thinking about scrapping my whole arsenal except my black eagle and just drilling like 3 more different eagles. dont think that there us anything i could run into that the eagle couldn't handle and handle well. Just not sure I can afford to do that right now. My second break s75 just cracked at the beginning of the season and i still am missing that ball. I hope they have plans to keep using the break core. Would love to see then just re release the s75. The look is no where close to being a replacement for me. I never got any of the break points still wish i would have.

TDub,

I just scored a NIB Break Point solid, and I know of BPP's out on Ebay. Still have to put holes in the BPS. Super stoked.

I'm looking into buying a Black Eagle myself, after reading all the positive reviews I think I'll hold off purchasing another Freight Train and picking up a Black Eagle! I currently have my Freight Train with the pin below the ring, cg kicked slightly out with a small hole. It's my go to oil ball. I would imagine the Black Eagle would fit in nicely as a replacement for my Gamebreaker and compliment the new Dirty Look that I have not yet drilled up. Any suggestions on the way I should layout the Black Eagle for sport patterns? Would you find a pin down layout more versatile than a pin up? I don't put much on the ball and my speed is around 15.5-16. Keep rollin' gentlemen!

I have had 2 one pin in the ring and the other pin down. They were fairly close. It depends on your stats but i would probably go pin down for sport patterns. The pin down at the t pad surface doesn't cover a ridiculous amount of boards but with some surface it starts up pretty early and just keeps hooking. Probably covers the most boards of any ball i have ever thrown except the s75. Might not set up the fastest so i wouldn't say the strongest but man does it cover boards. I think i am gonna do one double thumb my one pin in the ring, one 10 x  6 x 70 and see what i have. Might even do another pin down to replace the other one i gave to a teammate. Adjust the surfaces a little and i should be able to cover anything i will ever see....

I'm partial to Black bowling balls. This (IMHO) is THE 900G Benchmark ball.
I measure all my other equipment either over or under this ball !!
The surface is the easiest to work with. I like a good 2000 with a little shine.
If 900G had a Hall of Fame for balls this would be first ballot. jime
