Does 900 Global Suit Straighter Players?
« on: June 06, 2011, 08:37:29 AM »
Hi Guys, and Girls,

I have just changed ball drillers due to my old guy closing, and the new shop I have been visiting has been advising me against the equipment my old driller recommended (which was mainly Storm) and has suggested 900 Global. I was just wondering if I could get some good opinions from those who use them as to whether they suit a straighter, up the boards kind of player (As I am an old school kinda bowler) with medium revs and speed, and whether they are any pieces new or old I should look out for.

I appreciate any suggestions, I just want some back up to make sure this new driller is pointing me in the right direction.

Cheers Guys

He is right about Storm as their nature is to skid/flip but Global balls do the same thing to a lesser degree, the ball brand you should look into is Lane #1, a Diamond core located near the center will offer a strong controled arc to the pocket, if your going to try a Global product, look into the Profit series.

I haven't used 900 Global but do throw Storm and typically I am a straighter player.  So far, the VG Nano and Anarchy have been very good matching up for me doing that.  Same with Roto Grip- both balls I have from them also work for playing straighter.

The key is to work with your driller to fine tune layouts that will match your game.  Even though I usually play straighter, I can swing it if need be and be fairly successful.  Typically if I need to swing it more, I will go to the VG Nano or the Anarchy.  The Nomad Dagger and Rising Star are the 2 balls that I usually play much straighter with.  However, I have been successful with the Nano/Anarchy playing up the boards too, depending on the condition.  I even had to throw my Rising Star on the 4th arrow out to 5 this past Friday night because the lanes were bone dry on the outside and needed oil to keep it on line.

Now, it's true that the stuff from Storm can be more skid/flip depending on the layouts you use.  If it were me, I would look at control type layouts or surface changes to alter the reaction.  That may be all you need compared to spending a lot of money and switching your arsenal altogether.

I don't think its fair to label any company. All of the major companies have lineups that cover all bases and that combined with modern layout abilities and surface prep you can get favorable reactions out all the companies balls for your style.

Didn't hurt Walter Ray the year he rolled 900. He won the Masters rolling a Break Out. I think if you want to try 900, then get something like the Eagle and get your favorite drill pattern. Just invest in one ball and see if it fits your game. Worst case they are too strong, best case you found a new option. Like most companies they offer a variety of cores and covers. The Favorite could be a good choice too since it is a mid line cover  and symetrical core.

Roll with 900 Global.

Liz Johnson had a pretty successful career piping Storm equipment up the boards. As far as 900 Global you should look at:

Entry level: Red/Yellow polished solid Hook

Mid Level: Long Shot

Both would suit your needs for playing straighter angles and won't hurt the wallet. You can see the Hook in action on the Global website.

If the driller knows what he is doing the 900G equipment will do great. I had an Eagle drilled up two weeks ago and had a 300 out of the box with it. Same driller had a customer shoot his first 800 out the box with an Eagle two days earlier. Global balls are very adjustable and would suite most styles of bowling. I'm a tweener and can either bend the ball or go straight given a condition. They probably give you more bank for your buck than most other companies.

I also throw Lane Master equipment. You can't buy a better ball and they only have symmetrical cores that are easier to control and make adjustments with. They cost more but I have yet to hear of a LM ball crack, split or go into "ball death" from absorbing oil.

900 Global makes some great pieces, but if your looking for a smoother roll, try their counterpart, AMF.  AMF has same great pieces also.  They compliment each other well.  I have the red/yellow Hook sitting on the bench waiting to be drilled, but I have been rocking the pins this summer with the Slant, Double Clutch Pearl, and Euphoria in league, and the OMG on the sport shots.  The Euphoria is super smooth, reminds me of the Villain Pearl, and the Double Clutch Pearl is just pure money!  Several honor scores this summer with it, and just missed 290/11 in a row with it last night.  The Hook is gonna have to wait until the fall.

But, like others have said on here, as long as the driller knows what layouts would work for you, either of those companies equipment should be fine.

I think Storm is making some amazing pieces right now. I've sold a ton of the Victory Road pearls to straighter player and having great success. I've been using pretty strong pins and a flare increasing weight holes to get the ball started a bit sooner and still have amazing energy down lane.

900 Global has good pieces as well. Check out the Raw Profit and The Eagle. Both great balls!
