Break+Scorpion=nada
« on: July 03, 2008, 11:01:51 AM »
I got some unexpected practice today on PBA Scorpion I grabbed my Break as it was the strongest ball I had with me, I tried the first shot relatively straight about 15 at the arrows ten at the breakpoint with my normal hand, ball just skated nothing moved right just about flat up ten still nothing, up 5 and slow a little after 2 and 1/2 games I was disgusted and packed my gear up annoyed for not having anything stronger with me and annoyed that the Break wasn't breaking.

(on edit) this was bowled on brunswick pro anviline lanes, I have bowled PBA patterns on wood the last few years so I knew I would lose some of the reaction I am used to just not all of it.

I thought the Break was somewhat stronger than that I have mine at 1000 abralon (happy drrev? I spelled it right) with a 70x30 dual angle layout. Usually I see good Length with a strong controlled action at the backend of the lane. I was very disappointed with the ball on this pattern and most Sport and PBA patterns.

The PBA patterns are SO dependent on many factors beyond your control.  From week to week and pair to pair I see the same pattern act very different.  Soft hand and soft speed will sometimes wake up a ball that isn't cutting it.  I do know your pain though.  I bought a Black Widow Bite for the heavier PBA patterns and so far it's been a dog on Shark and Scorpion.  I tried a "flare increasing" weight hole based on Brunswick's recommendations that didn't help.  Right now it's being plugged and will be re done using MoRich's gradient line balance hole system.  Next week is Shark again, so I'll be able to tell if a difference has been made.  Our back ends start weaker than the videos on videoballreviews show, then carry down hard and fast.  No ball will shine on heavy carry down, but the Bite hasn't impressed me on the fresh either.

If it's not hooking, move right, slow it down, and move your target left.  Point the ball if you have to.  I played them down and in from the 5 board and pointing to the hole on the Scorpion in my PBA Experience league with a Cell at 1000 grit and shot consistently in the 190-210 range almost every game.  Besides, I actually gave up on trying to hook the PBA shots.  If I moved into the track area, I could get more ball motion, but I had to be so incredibly accurate to make it work.  I have better carry and more miss room playing more direct from outside.  There's a reason Duke and WRW play out there whenever possible, even if they can change hand positions and hook it from inside if they wanted to.
