Title: My Link with about 10 games cracked!
Post by: johns811 on February 12, 2011, 02:43:56 AM
Lost my dry lane ball sitting on the carpeted floor. My link with about 10 games on it cracked all the way around. No longer under warranty but that sucks basically a brand new ball is now trash. Be nice if warranty would be a little longer like cars 3+ years.

Mine had small hairline cracks around the fingers like a week after drilling it. I loved the ball but it cracked just like every other 900 global ball I have owned.

I'd have a talk with your driller if its cracking around the fingers like that just after drilling.  He's not doing something right.  I've been throwing 900/AMF for the last 2 years and haven't had one ball crack yet.  Sorry about your bad luck.  Have you tried contacting Eric and the boys over there?

Ball didn't crack around the fingers. It cracked upward from the middle finger, upward about the 10:00 direction, all the way around the ball passed the thumb hole, threw the grip to the buttom edge the ring finger.

If you've had it long enough for it to be out of warranty period and only had 10 games on it, it doesn't sound like it was getting much use at all.

Many of the ball cracking subjects I see have this in common, including one that recently cracked on me. A ball I really liked, but rarely had conditions for, cracked in almost the exact same fashion as yours did, but only 1/2 way around the ball.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the covers "drying out" and possibly shrinking, thus causing them to crack?

That might have something to do with it.

Others have said that the coverstock never finishes curing (ie: it's constantly curing).  That would sense from all the reports about balls cracking while sitting out in a perfectly climate controlled environment - most tend to stay at a very low humidity level.

I keep all my unused balls stored in boxes, and in the plastic bags.  I occassionally go through and rotate them - usually when I'm rearranging stuff in the garage, looking for a new ball to drill, or to take pics and post them for sale.  It isn't often, maybe once or twice a year, and some probably never get touched.

I've got about 10 balls in the house, and another 80+ in the garage.  Garage is detached, non-insulated, and not climate controlled.  Winter temps get down below 30, and summer temps get into the 90s.  I've only had 2 balls crack in the garage and 1 crack in the house.  Of those 3, 2 of had some form of plug work (1 in the house, 1 in the garage)....and were not stored in a plastic bag or the box - there were all either sitting in a box or on a ball cup.

If it makes any difference, the balls were:  AMF Titan SE, Track Mutant, and Ebonite V2 Sweet (x-out) - no plug work.
