Title: Need help picking a ball for my Dad
Post by: 900DJ on June 09, 2013, 11:32:57 AM
My Dad has a Breakout that he loves more than any ball ever.  The problem is that it is all that he currently has.  It works great for him on med/heavy house shots and most sport shots.  But when he encounters short patterns or strong backends he can't control it.  My question is, he is looking to only add one more ball and wants to stay with 900 global, which ball would be the best step down for these ocassions and give him a similar look as the Breakout?  He is left handed a little rev dominant and likes to play 16 out to 5-8 on ths.  I'm thinking a Rip it, wisdom pearl, or hybrid hook??

There are a couple of great choices for lighter/short patterns from 900 Global and there little brother company AMF. The Amf Cobra Special Edition might be the perfect ball for what your father is looking for. It has a nice strong cover and a very mild core to make it very controllable on those patterns. Also the 900 Global Hook Hybrid is a very good ball. Could be a little jumpy on shorter patterns just because of its higher flare potential and polished cover. And the last would be the 900 Global Hook Black/Green. It would be a little sooner than the hybrid but a little smoother down lane as well. These 3 balls would be awesome choices for lighter/shorter patterns and are all very affortable. The Rip-It i think would still be a little too much of a ball for those conditions and would also be hard to control.

The cobra would be smoother on the back correct?  Would he drill it the same as the breakout and let the ball itself be the difference given he will only have 2 balls plus plastic?

Absolutely, the cobra is very smooth. If that is a drilling that your father really enjoys than keep it the same and let the ball manipulate the motion. I believe the break out was an asymmetric core and the cobra is a symmetric core. So the cobra could be drilled the same without worring about mass bias postion.

And yes its smooth on the backend. It only has a .017 differential. Thats what make it smooth.

thanks for the replies, but I worry bout the cover being so strong, in fact stronger than the breakout, on the cobra that it might hook too early?

Have you considered a Wisdom?  S65 coverstock and symetrical core should give your dad the look he wants.  I have a teammate who has one.  It looks very smooth through the front end and has a nice arc on the back end.  By the way my teammate is not a senior bowler and is in the category of a cranker.  So I was amazed at how smooth the ball is for him.

I second the Wisdom.

One side note about the Wisdom(s):
The one that should be useful to him is the current Red/Silver one, which is better for slower speed bowlers. It probably has the least backend for any of the 900G balls which would be considered a step down from the Breakout. The Hooks are all stronger balls than the Wisdom and are incredible values for the money with a wide variety form pearl to solid to hybrid.

The original and older one, the Black and Gold one, is a ball that tends towards the skid/flip, which is not good for slower speed bowlers.

The folks on this forum may know but where does the LOng Shot fall in this mix ?? I have seen other bowlers use it and it looked pretty good for them but I have not used one personally..

But it's been discontinued for so long and has not been seen new for such a long time, I don't believe many people even give it a 2nd thought any more. It was a good ball but is much stronger than the Wisdom, with stronger cover and stronger core.

Yeah, we're talking about stuff you could easily get on closeout *sniff* or on eBay. If someone has some NIB 900 gems laying around, then that is another post...

+1 for the king cobra loving that ball right now on our lighter summer shot.

+1 for the King Cobra. Had great success on the 32' Sydney with a King Cobra drilled the same as my old Favorite. Perfect step down from the S70 coverstock.

What are you waiting for? Put some holes in one! Try it out, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks, I think he is sold on the King Cobra.  Hopefully it will be the step down he is looking for.

I guess its time I put my 2 cents in the matter LOL..  I would go with the long shot  if you can find one or better yet. why don't he try the new Vixen, it will be worth the wait I'm sure over all the other choices that have been said :)   these new balls will turn a few heads IM sure if they haven't already :)

King Cobra will be way to strong for shorter patterns unless you throw 20 mph. If you thought the Cobra S.E. would be to strong you will be very disappointed with this ball. Not by any means calling this a bad ball but it is alot stronger than advertised.  Example is the Sure Thing. This ball is extremely aggressive and much more ball than advertised. It out hooks almost every ball in 900 Globals line up.

Agreed; it is not much of step down from a Breakout without a bunch of polish

Bowlingman really?.  YOU think the Sure Thing out hooks almost every ball 900GLOBAL has brought out?   WOW IM shocked to even read that ::)  I guess it hooks a ton for you then but not everyone hooks this ball as much as you by the looks of it. I have yet to see it out hook many of the other balls 900 has put out in almost the last 7 years they have been making balls :-X starting back in 9-4 of 07 with the Creature and 3-3-08 with the creature Pearl and the 72 other balls they have released in the U.S and over seas (  all great balls to throw still today  ;D  ) I think the Sure Thing is an OK ball  (it's just nothing I write home to Grandma about or be running out right now to get another 1 when I have so many other balls to pick from in the 900 Global's arsenal, older or newer balls ). I just don't see it happening!!  kudos to you then for making this 1 of the strongest hooking balls you've thrown in the 900 global line  ;)  theres just way to many stronger balls in the past or present to list, Ill even say the Mark Roth ball is 1 of them ( he has been missed by many ) :)  Keep it up 900Global :)

Why not a Hook Pearl? When my Eagle line equipment starts hooking up early, I can use my Hook Hybrid, and jump right. My War Eagle is much stronger than my Hook Hybrid, drilled the same. The pearl would push it even further. If it's too jumpy, hit it with a 4000 pad.

I'd suggest that because he's an older guy who is rev dominant. The hooks have a lot of flare potential from their higher differential, as compared to the Wisdom. Of course if it were drilled with a low pin but a longer pin distance, like 5.5" pin to PAP, it could work as well as  Wisdom or similar ball, but most people (vs. those of us here who discuss such things and try alternatives) don't modify drillings and will drill most balls strong.

Don't forget that because it works for you doesn't mean it will work for him.

I still feel inclined to think that a Wisdom or a polished up King Cobra (if he loves this ball that much) are safer alternatives, as a drop down ball to the Breakout.

I'd bet a Sanded Hook would be almost as strong as his Breakout. and a sanded Wisdom would be weaker than a Sanded Hook (pearl or hybrid).
