Title: Zen - beginning to hate it
Post by: BeerLeague on January 28, 2022, 02:49:32 PM
Hey All .... I picked up a Zen in November, hearing about how awesome it is.  My use has been limited BUT so far, the jury is still out.  So far, I prefer the Zen Master over the Zen.

As a righty, I have noticed the ball is great for nine counts and buzzsaw splits .... 4 pin.. move - 10 pin .. move - 8 pin .. move .. 9 pin ... -- don't forget the 4-9 and 2-10 that will show up eventually.... its never ending.  I seem to have difficulty getting it to carry and go thru the pins the right way.  It's super clean and super strong when it turns .... almost too much.

Ball is 1500 polish ... maybe i need to go to 4000?  I'd be concerened it would overlap with the Master too much ... dunno

Anyone else on the fence with this ball?

Definitely a surface issue especially if you like the Zen Master

Use a pad by hand with light pressure to knock the shine off

+1.  For me, the Storm/Roto Grip balls with factory polish have tended to be a little over/under in some cases.  Using a 3000 or 4000 grit pad, apply light pressure as SVstar34 mentioned.  It should make a difference and get you a reaction that's better suited to your game.

My ZEN is in the ball oven right now. After that I'm giving it a full re-surface on the spinner.  I saw it today on the lanes, it is definetly losing its pop and/or burning up getting down the lane.  I immediately switched to my Hy-Road Pearl which is only about a month older with the same amount of games on it.  The Hy-Road Pearl still backends like the 1st day I bought it but the ZEN does not.  Isn't there another recent thread about the most durrable balls or coverstocks?  The R2S and R2S Pearl get my vote.

I hit mine with a 4000 pad after having some inconsistent results.  The ball reaction really improved.  I would recommend trying this.

Update. After the rejuvinator oven and resurfacing with 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and then reactashine polish it rolls like it did brand new.  But getting it to go sideways was way to easy. Or the volume was a little low on our THS last night.  It is an old machine and puts the THS down spotty sometimes.

Gonna knock the polish off and I should like again.

I'm working thru issues with my Zen on another thread. How many games did you have on yours before needing to be rejuvenated? I maintain mine well but even when finding a good surface it goes away far too quickly IMHO....

Honestly I don't know how many.  I'll just say a lot because I bowl at least 4 nights a week.  I wouldn't be surprised if it's over a hundred.  I hear what you're saying though.  Brings back memories of one of my other favorite balls, the NoRules OG.  After awhile rejuvinating and resurfacing had to happen after just a couple sets.  It would just soak up more oil faster and faster and faster......  I'll bet I could take it out of the closet and bowl 6 games with it right now, and then get a quart of oil out of it, lol

Maybe my ZEN is going down the same route???  Bowled today and it is working again just like when it was new.   Who knows how long it will last?  For comparison my HyRoad pearl is my usaul step down ball from the ZEN.  And it hasn't quit performing.
