Well I just bought the ball today and it is a real trusting ball. You ship it out there and it comes back. I put mine in a luster king for 8 minutes and the skid slap is wonderful. The pin placement is under my fingers. I am not sure of the drill pattern. The lane condition was medium oil with avg. backend. I give this ball two thumbs up. Just what I was looking for.

15# 3" pin.  Pin and cg at 10:30 with the pinhalf inch out and down of ring finger.

I had to check the ball after the first toss to see if it had studs sticking out of the cove.  Good golly does this hook.  Threw it on fresh oiled house shot and this stroker had to get deep.  I thinke this ball would hook if you put STP on the lanes.  If I was still bowling Regionals and drew A squad, this ball would be in my hands to start.  I shot 205 on a condition that was not conducive to this ball.  Usually with this bad of a mismatch between lane and ball I would be looking something in the 170s or worse, so It has reasonable power and good predictability.  Of course I was predicting HOOK and it didn't let me down.

Hi i drilled this ball with a stacked drilling with the pin above my ring finger at about 1 o clock and cg kicked out a bit and i shined it to the max. this ball is so smooth through the heads and has a lot to show for in the backend, i used it on a fresh oiled up house shot for a city tournament and had 300 1433 for 6 games, it is a great ball. I tried it dull but i dont throw dull balls to good and dont get a good reaction from them so that is what made me decide to shine it up and what a great choice this was. Good job AMF and also i am a AMF pro shop employee.

Just purchased this ball. Pin is just right and just below ring finger. Ball will just plain hook. I have mine drilled using the forward drilling spot. It loses nothing in the front part of the lane and finishes HARD in the back. You need OIL for this one to work. If you are looking for a ball with surface this is the one!!!

OK... This is an update to a review I did several monthes back.

Right handed, 16-17 MPH, high revs.  Typical shot is stand anywhere from 25 to 30, and throw from 15-20 out to 10 ish.  Typical lane conditions on a house shot are medium oil, 7 to 7 ish, light oil on the outside, with light carry down.

I bought this ball for heavy oil lanes, and had it drilled with the pin about an inch to the right side of the fingers, the cg kicked out about 3 inches and the other mark in about an inch and half to two inches right and just below the thumb.  There is also a weight hole that is about 3 inches deep.  Ok, at first in the snaded box finish, on med/heavy lanes, the ball turned up very early and gave me a very even roll up into the pocket.  I threw a few games with good consistant results.  I then polished the ball and got a very long skid with an unbelievable amount of snap.

Fastforward about 4 monthes to now.

I just had this ball resurfaced and polished all the way up.  The ball has tamed down a little bit, but I like this ball a little tamer.  It is much more consistant.  Now with this ball polished up, I get a very very good reaction when there is a good backend to work with.  With alot of carry down on heavy oil, I get very little break on the back, and the ball hits soft.  Now I also get a very good reaction on a medium oil shot, regardless of carry down.
This ball has become a very good match for my Storm Lightening Flash.  The storm ball in drill to arch on the back.  When the arch is coming to early on the lane, I pull out the Hook Monster, and throw the exact same line for a pocket shot.
My likes with this ball are that is very easy to adjust the reation of the ball.  You can turn the wrist a little and get a huge reaction.. or you can just follow thru the back of the ball and still get a hook, but without covering so many boards.  Some balls do not like to be thrown straighter, and others do not like to be hooked alot.  This ball is very versitile on the MED-HEAVY oiled shots.
My dislikes are that this ball in its box finish, really drinks the oil on the lane.

        On a scale of 1 to 10

............sanded box finish.................polished
length .............5.........................8
over all hook.......8.........................9
backend reation.....6.........................8
consistancy.........8.........................8
wet/dry.............6.........................10
wet/carrydown.......9.........................5
medium/dry..........6.........................9
dry.................1.........................5

I hope this review helps anybody who might be considering this ball.

This ball was a real pleasant suprise for me.

I made the transition from dryer short pattern wood lanes to heavily oiled longer pattern synthetics this year.  I have thrown reactive equipment all my life and the only one i could get to move on this harder shot is my dulled  black spirit.  So scratch the messenger line and a few miscellaneous others to the for trade boards and invested in a few particles.  Most reviews of the early particles were premature and were very positive for the first 12 games.  But as i broke them in i realized they had major flaws.  My predator was very high maintainence and hit like crud.  My icon 2 squirted way too much.  My recovery didnt move.  My colossus was over under.  I had a saw that didnt finish hard.  My last two however have been winners.  The icon and the hook monster so i will compare these two.

Icon drilled 5 1/2 X 4 1/2 - Polished.  Ball has a rare combination of midlane move, arcing huge backend, and deck clearing power.

Hook monster 4X4 - 600 grit.  A combination of different drill and different surface preparation makes this ball an icon on steroids.  I give the ball a great deal of revs and play 25 to 7 and it comes back seriously hard.  But it is mostly and arc, so i was tapped very few times.  I love the fact this ball flares about 10inches!  Have about 50 games on it and no loss in performance.

In summary - I would really recommend the icon and hook monster if you love particle - If set up right they will really compliment each other well.  The hook monster is a stronger ball in my opinion so that is why i set it up with more grit.

Ok so someone wants this restored to out of box surface which best I’ve been able to find is polished. However I cannot find a underlying grit to put it at before the polish. This is the oldest ball I’ve worked on can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

This link will help, but unfortunately nothing on underlying grit. This is from 2002 and it's in an era that cover finishing grits weren't widely advertised yet by some manufacturers.
