Picked one of these up a few months back at a good price, but I have waited to drill it until my wrist got better. Theres only 3 reviews of it in the review section, so I'm wondering if anyone uses one or has drilled some for customers? Is it comparable to say a Tropical Storm strength wise?

Also, my intention with it is to be used on shorter flatter patterns. It is a pin in ball, pin and cg are actually like no more than 1/8" apart. I have had success in the past with pin in equipment, my question is would this ball be appropriate for what I want it for? Quick reference, my pap is 5 over and 1/2" down, 425-450 rev rate with med. high axis rotation, close to 9 degrees of tilt, and 17.5 mph ball speed.

The pin-CG distance makes no difference at all since this is a simple pancake cored ball.I doubt if it will be anything close to the Tropical Storm, although with your rev rate you may get a decent move out of it. It is a very even reacting ball with good hitting power, for a pancake core. But as pancake core it is nowhere near as dynamic in its reaction as the least dynamic cored ball. Its overall reaction is closer to that of a urethane ball and is best used as directly as possible on dry to light oiled lanes.

For the most dynamic action, you might want to try the special drilling Mo Pinel recommended for the Plastic Ball tournament. I believe it is ver on BowlingChat.com

Thanks for the response Charles, and a good tip about the special plastic ball drilling, I will definitely look into it. I had good success with an old Turbo C drilled straight over the label for shorter stuff, and I was hoping the Smoke would be close to that ball.

Update: Went with Mo's plastic ball layout, and wow what a reaction from a pancake weightblock. This ball is gonna be perfect for lower volume flatter patterns, particularly shorter stuff. Bowled with it today, and the manager of the center I bowled at said the pair I was on hadnt been bowled on since yesterday.

The Smoke was super clean through the front, and read the mid-lane alot stronger than I thought it would. Very nice motion on the back, i actually got a couple to go sideways lol. All in all I'd say to at least try this drilling on a weak piece, or something older you may have laying around, I think its that good!
