Title: AMF Venom question
Post by: VAbowler on March 17, 2006, 12:50:15 AM
I got one, 14 lb, 3 in pin, i told the driller i wanted it pretty strong, he put the pin right below the ring finger, w/the mb kicked out strong, the problem is it's too strong, i only throw about 15 mph, the ball almost catches the lane before it can go out far enough, probably due to the med load particle pearl coverstock,  i don't wanna get it plugged & redrilled, so i was wondering what the Extender polish would do?  Would it make a significant difference?  Does it sacrifice backend? Or can/do i get the ball polished more (can that be done?)  i wanted the ball to have some length w/strong backend, hopefully i won't have to get it redrilled.  Any input?

i would definitely play with the cover a little bit before you plug it. try like 1000 abralon pad then polish. as far as the type of polish you use, my favorite is black magic. doesn't sacrifice any backend at all. great stuff. keep us updated on how it works.

That is one thing that people will probably underestimate on this ball.  It is a very strong particle pearl.  My Venom that has a 5in pin.  I put my pin around 2inches above the MF and Cg kicked out about 2 1/2 inches with it in my grip center.  Threw it tonight and very strong reaction.  I am glad that I did not drill it strong.  This ball gets through the heads very clean and snaps very hard to the pocket.

you've said before that your SJP is 4X4, so granted, stronger drill, but how do the two compare the way you have them? thinkin about getting it.

Matt-- The venom is a much stronger ball in my opinion than the SJP.  If you are looking for a great particle pearl pick this one up.  Like I said the way I have the 2 drilled and I have not thrown the two side by side yet for comparison as I just drilled it up yesterday I would say this one if I had it drilled would be around 2 boards stronger maybe a couple more.

yes, the Venom is stronger than I expected, w/the orig drilling the ball would checkup in the midlane before i could really swing it, i added some polish to add skid, it also added backend.  Good ball, knowing this info, i prolly would have put the pin next to finger, or a little above.

In response to MFortney, the ball comes pearl, if i use abralon, will it affect the particle?  Or is it scotchbrite?

VAbowler,

Just reading your post and wanted to give you a little insight on the Venom.  Remember that placing the pin in relation to your PAP is the most dominant factor in the way the ball will roll, or ball motion, besides cover stock.  Do you know your PAP? Just because it's below the fingers doesn't really give much info as far as how strong of a layout that is for you.  This could be too strong or too close to your PAP and cause it to roll too early.  Also take note that a pin below the fingers tends to roll and arc and not respond to the dry as quick as a pin above the fingers would.  Also is there a weight hole?  This could also effect ball motion.  The Venom is a strong piece in my opinion.  It will be great when the back ends are a little squirly and still need the ball to pick up in the backs. Drill another weaker and then you'll have a couple of looks with the same coverstock.  Also use scotchbrite for surface adjustments, as this will not break down the particle in the cover. Goodluck!

Alright, I've decided to get this ball plugged and redrilled; the arc just doesn't fit my game, I wanted a long and strong backend drilling, so I'm asking for suggestions.  Was thinking of putting the pin either next to the ring, or above about 1 oclock to get more length, but where should the MB go?  Right now it's about 2 inches right of thumb.

Depends on how you throw - I have my "long and flippy" balls drilled with pin above ring finger or above finger bridge, with MB close to thumb, or cg in center of grip!

Well, I took it to a shop, the guy is cool, he suggested pin over ring, cg kicked out, said it would flip hard, any confirmation of this?
