A Charlie Brown UUUUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH.....
2nd AMF Grip that has cracked on me. Different drills, but both started at the ring finger.
Oh well, I will miss that ball... 9

Different driils or different drill bits?

Different drills...

Not trying to start anything here. I see more posts on the message boards about 900 global / AMF stuff cracking. I've had my share of them believe me. Now I know the shells of their stuff is not very thick. I've been told thickness does not have anything to do with it. We've agreed to disagree. They have indicated they have done extensive testing about cover thickness. Lets see, if a bone is thin it will more than likely crack easier and faster than a bone that's thick. I know my pro shop very well and I know he takes care of the bits as well as speed. I've only had 900 Global / AMF crack on me. That's all I throw too. I'm still loyal to them.

I'm still loyal too....lol. Trying to decide on whether to get another Cobra/Bull Whip or get a Wisdom or Jewel.
-
I definitely want the Cobra. Bull Whip would be better for me though at where I bowl. I want to pull the trigger on these but I want to be able to have equipment I can throw in PBA competition.
-
Do you bevel your finger holes or round off the top edge slightly?
Just curious.

Luckylefty
PS almost all my "crackers" have Been from AMF/SanAntonio also.

1/2" to 5/8" is fairly standard for cover thickness across the board. Are theirs significantly thinner?

Do you use inserts and are they using super glue for them? Using too much super glue to glue in inserts is the #1 reason why you will see cracks in a ball around the fingers. The Super Glue dries so quickly it removes what little moisture there is in the coverstock and will make it very brittle if too much is used. This always will cause cracks around the fingers. I have never had a ball crack on me and have been bowling for 30+ years. I have drilled hundreds of AMF/Global balls and never had any crack on a customer. If no inserts then would be a coverstock anomoly and AMF/900G have great customer service and would have a ball to you ASAP.
-
I still have not had one crack, but then again when I glue inserts in I glue then to the filler not the cover stock, and use a heavy bevel.
-
I don't use inserts, and use no bevel in the fingers. On a ball that I haven't plugged, haven't had a crack.
-
No issues with drills (fingers). I use inserts. I just believe its the ball. None of my other 900/AMF balls have done this. Tempted to get another Grip, but will pass. Twice if learned, third time won't happen....9

How long have you had it? Contact Eric about warranty?

Thanks Storm. Made the call and the ball will be replaced....9

That's the customer service i know and love!

They have great customer service for sure.
Be careful when drilling your next one......I saw the pic of the one on your photo bucket. If you drill part way into a pin.It will crack almost 100% of the time. Either adjust the layout to miss the pin or drill the pin out.
Been drilling a long time if you avoid that you might save yourself a headache in the future

J mac there covers are right at a 1/2 well 7/16 to be exact.

I have had a couple of Hammers crack on me, but AMF and Global crack on me most regular. It's wierd for me...I use Turbo thumbs and when mine crack they start at the thumb. And I say with confidence those that have cracked have been used for a season plus. I don't quite understand.
Never really mattered much to me. Stuff happens. Only real problem is they are usually hand me down balls so there is no warranty.
Heck I even had a Roto Grip Cell (original) crack on me. It went from the thumb all the way back around the back of the ball to the fingers. I was mad, but decided to fix it. I used the clear packaging tape and went all the way around it leaving a small vent hole in the top for air to escape. After I fixed it I reengraved it and went on to use it for 2 more seasons.
It seems more like a seperation between the surface veneer and outer core. Different thermal properties could be causing the materials to seperate creating weak spots is the covers, bam cracks...
