Title: My AMF Grip Review w/300 Game Tonight! Woohoo!
Post by: Gunny on August 30, 2011, 01:17:40 PM

14lbs
Drilled 60°x4"x50°
x-hole 1" down from pap on val
mb  5" from pap

8-23-11
The Grip has a really strong, but smooth  motion to the pocket.  Not your typical hockey stick motion that most new releases have, but more of a controlled hook down the lane.  First night out, I shoot 678 right out of the box(226, 225, 227) on your typical ths on synthetics, playing 17 at the arrows and 10 for the breakpoint.  Made a 3-1 move left the last game as my only adjustment

8-24-11
The next night in my sport shot league, bowling on Kegel's 42' Autobahn, I shoot 646 playing a light fluff.  15 at the arrows and 12 at the breakpoint.  Ball walked in nicely, and I didn't have to make any major adjustments as the night went on, shooting 201, 244, 201.  So far I am loving the Kegel patterns.  Have bowled on Winding Road and Autobahn, and tomorrow its Turnpike.

8-30-11
Tonight on my tues. mens league, I fished around in practice wanting to throw the Raging Bull Charged, and couldn't find a decent line to pocket.  Threw the Grip the last two shots in practice and decided to go with it.  I ended up playing 13 at the arrows, and 5 at the breakpoint.  Come out first game with a 201, missed 3 ten pins and one of them was in the tenth, doh!  I than end up stuffing the next 19 frames, shooting 300 the second game and 246 the last game for a nice 747 set.  I didn't make any adjustments all night.  Another ecstatic night with the Grip!

My thoughts on the ball, is that it is a very readable and predictable ball motion down the lane.  So having to make adjustments comes fairly easy.  The motion is comparable to the Mega Recovery, but with not so much hook.  With this ball, I know I'm gonna get the same continuous motion down the lane every time I throw it.  I think AMF has a winner with the Grip!

That ball really surprised me when I demo'd it about a month ago. I actually had NO intention of throwing this ball, but the other balls in my size were already out so Dave Sharp hands me The Grip and asks me to throw a few shots while I wait for one of the other balls to free up. I only threw four shots with the Grip, but all four were perfect pocket hits and strikes. As Gunny mentioned, the ball is smooth and predictable (the surface treatment helps in that regard), and it also seemed to give me a little wiggle room. As far as I could tell, the carry was pretty good, too. I'm a believer!

Thanks guys!  I'm really loving this new piece by AMF.  The 300 has been my 3rd in the last few months, all have been shot with AMF pieces....Hype Pearl, Double Clutch Pearl, and Grip.  Seems like AMF and me are a decent match.

I've been dying to throw the Raging Bull Charged and Times Up, but the Grip and Jewel have just been awesome in my hands.  The Jewel, with a 2" pin to pap drilling, has been a godsend on the house I bowl in where I see very little oil.  First night out was a 680 with it on some really dry conditions where all on the pair were throwing plastic but me.  That review will come after more games on it.

All I kept hearing about was the OMG Pearl being an awesome piece, but the Grip is just amazing.  My OMG Pearl still sits undrilled on the work bench.  Don't know if I'll end up drilling it or not.  Having too much fun throwing the Grip!

Thanks again guys, and I wish you all the best the upcoming season!

Gunny,

Good to hear that the pieces are working well. I feel the same way about the big heist as you do about the jewel. I didn't I would like it as much as I do! The big heist and the clutch are a great 1-2 punch on a ths.

In fact, you just inspired me to go take pics of my layouts.

I hear ya on the Big Heist.  I have one and it was awesome on the short patterns in my sport shot league.  Good length and a whopper of a backend on that ball.  I was able to play way in with it on those patterns.  Two good pieces you have there!

I thought I would like the clutch pearl more, but the big heist won me over. I drilled 5 balls, and between the solid clutch, the pearl, the bank, hype urethane, and the heist, the heist wins on the ths, followed by the hype.

Hey Gunny, if your still in doubt regarding drilling the OMG Pearl, I will only say this: when I throw the ball and hits the pocket, people ask if it weights 30 pounds.

congrats!  double clutch pearl best ball i have ever had my hands on.  i was considering the grip but i was scared it would be like the double clutch solid, which i did not like.

Thanks guys!  Just missed another 300 with it a few nights ago.  Had the front 7 than the ball return broke down and they couldn't get it back running.  So we had to switch lanes.  Ended up shooting 247, who knows what could've been if the lane didn't break down.  This ball is the cats meow for me right now.  So easy to read and make adjustments with.  I still haven't thrown the Raging Bull Charged or Times Up, and the OMG Pearl is still sitting on the workbench.  Maybe I'll force myself to throw something different tonight.

Gunny,

Nice shooting.

Did you ever drill up a Bounty Hunter?

Same core shape.

Just wondering if you found the ball motion to be similar or not.

thanks for your response.

bass, I did drill up the Bounty Hunter.  Bounty Hunter was a bit stronger, and I did end up having to put polish on it in order to use it on league conditions.   Alot more mid-lane with the Bounty Hunter the ball ended up burning up on me, hence is why I had to go to the polish.  In my opinion the Grip and Mega Recovery are very similar in ball motion with the Mega being the stronger of the two.

I didn't throw the Grip tonight, and finally threw the Raging Bull Charged.  With the condition being a little drier than normal, the Grip was just way too much off the friction.  Raging Bull Charged was the ticket.  Shot a nice little 653, should've been higher if, my head was on straight, and didn't miss the five ten pins.  Overall, I think I hit the head on the layout of the Raging Bull Charged to fit below the Grip.  I haven't gone out and practiced with all the new stuff to get a feel on where they all fit, maybe one day this or next week, and I'll get some vid.
