Which Ball to buy
« on: August 01, 2004, 11:38:45 AM »
Hi All,

I am a newbie when it comes to bowling. I just purchased a pair of shoes last week and I am thinking of buying a bowling ball. Can anyone suggest what type of ball and which brand that I should consider?

I am starting to pick up bowling more seriously, however I am still considered myself a beginner...

Please be more precise on the type as I do not know a lot about bowling...

You kind attentioni is highly appreciated.

regards,
Cruz

Lets keep this simple.  Since you are new at this, do not spend alot of money.  Go to your pro shop and just ask the operator there that you are looking for something "low end".  There are a few resin balls out there that retail for less than $120.00.  I would suggest something like a Tornado Warning by Ebonite, a Power Groove by Brunswick, Scout by Columbia 300, just to name a few.  Learn the basics first such as the approach from set up through your release.  Once you get the hang of that, then step up to something in the mid performance level.  Either way you go about this, your pro shop operator will guide you in the right direction.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.

My girlfriend also wants to buy, should she purchase a reactive ball also OR just a normal plastic ball?

those are all good suggestions, but don't forget about the used bowling balls.  The used bowling balls are one of the best deals you can get if you're just starting because you can get a good quality bowling ball (from all ranges of performance) for cheap.  If you want something new I would suggest the following:

STORM:
Hot Rod
Barbed Wire
Razor Wire
Big Hit (The regular hit might not hook as much)

COLUMBIA 300:
Spirit
Spirit II
Beast
-any one of the scouts (most likely the green pearlized one)
Flipside Fear
Flipside Wild
Jekyll
Hyde
-any of the messengers

BRUNSWICK:
-any of the grooves (excellent performance for the money)
Monster Slay/R
Monster Frenzy

EBONITE:
Fire
Ice
any of the Tornado's

ROTO GRIP:
Sonic Boom
Sonic X
Super Sonic
Retro Resurrection

TRACK:
Dry Heat
Crash
Crunch Time

P.S. Just make sure not to choose a urethane ball unless you want the ball to go pretty much straight. Sorry if I missed any other balls.  All the companies are good and have quality bowling balls that fit each individuals game.  The only reason why people get picky when it comes to different companies is because they might have a bad experience with "one" ball so they go to another company that a ball works better for them (in actuality, it can be more of the ball drillers fault for not drilling the bowling ball to that person's bowling style and just drilled according to generalization).  Some of the most popular bowling companies are Storm, Columbia, Track, and Brunswick.  Although Roto Grips is starting to make a steady comeback.  If your girlfriend wants to bowl but just throw the bowling ball straight then going with a polyester (plastic) bowling ball would be more reasonable for cost and for her game.  If she got a higher performance bowling ball and just used it to throw straight, then it would be like buying a race car and driving Miss Daisy around all day without racing.

These are all good points. Don't do what I did when I first started out. I wanted to get good fast so I bought $200.00 dollar balls without knowing what
I was doing. Get your release right first and determine how to play the lanes.
Then maybe you want to move up to higher end stuff. It helps to know what you are looking for when you go to the pro shop to buy your ball or you might pay to much. Used or lower end reactives are the way to go.

Since we happen to be on the AMF board, I'm really amazed that no one has suggested the SCAMP by AMF.  It's actually one of the BEST low cost balls out there.  I was surprised at the power this ball packs.  And the Justice balls are great for the cost also!

Being you are kind of new the best type of ball you should get is one that rolls. Try a Track Havoc or a Ebonite V2 Sweet or a Roto-Grip Silver Streak they would be good choices.

CRUZ .. think you did a GOOD THING by looking for help on a BOWLING BALL purchase before you stop off at your local pro shop. I wasn't that smart!

Problem is .. it's difficult to suggest anything to you .. not knowing some info about your techniques. Bowling balls can be pretty expensive .. would you want to buy a top of the line ball when you haven't got your feet wet yet with the game? I don't know the answer to that question.

There are bowling sites that describe balls offered from different manufacturers .. BOWLING.COM is one .. visit it and look it over. The price you see will be the ball only .. you would then have to take it to your local pro shop for fitting and drilling. That is an added expense that is also substantial in some areas. You also have the option of perusing the site for ideas then go to your local pro shop where he will quote a price to you for the ball/fitting and delivery.

One other thought .. before you develop too many BAD HABITS it might be a good idea to seek a few hours instructions from a local coach. All this is expensive but if you want to enjoy the game .. it is necessary!

Welcome to the game and lots of luck!
