Yet another Hype question

I have two urethane hypes punched up and I just punched a purple hype 30x4x30. I love the purple hype, but the one of the urethane hypes is 30x4.5x65 with a hole on my pap oob  surface. Haven't found enough head oil for it, apparently, because the ball checks up in the heads. The other one is drilled 45x4x80. Gets through the heads fine but its too smooth to be effective.

Question is... A urethane drilled like the resin.... Good idea or bad idea? Would the ball flare too much to be useful?

Try drilling one with a smaller angle to the VAL such as 35 or 30. Also, smoothing out the cover to something like 2k or 4k abralon could help.

FYI, I have drilled a few Hype Urethanes, and even pin up I needed to get the pin at least 5" from my axis to get it through the fronts due to the amount of flare it creates. Using urethane, for me, is all about getting the ball through the fronts, with enough on the backend to kick the 10. This sometimes requires more attention to surface prep than you would with a resin ball. Sometimes it's as simple as wet sand vs. hand sand, or even the final sanding line direction (with or against the track) on the spinner.

 Yeah, I need to see if I can work the surface on the.stronger one. Maybe do 4k sanding with the initial track to her it through the fronts. I honestly think I drilled the.second one to be too early. I hears the surface on it is super hard to manipulate. Any truth to it?

Also, I was thinking one drilled 60x5x35 would work well on a house shot. Can't believe how much that ball flares.

Yes the surface is somewhat hard to work with, and almost impossible to polish. With enough time, you can smooth it out pretty well.

60x5x35 is my favorite layout on that ball.

A step down from the Hype would be the Grenade or the Blue Hammer, both good options.

That sounds like a good idea. I can always score a.few more from tekneek.

One thing about the surface. Isn't it 4k abralon oob? I think a t pad with tons of water would smooth it out.

They advertise it as 4k, in my experience its more like 1k. I would start with 1k, a minute on each "side" with a spinner, then on to 2k, etc., until you get to the desired surface.

I'll just confirm just about everything everyone else said
- seemed more like 1000 grit than 4000 grit. It took me weeks literally of fine sanding and polishing to get just smooth. It wouldn't take a polish. Storm's Xtra Shine was the compound that had the most effect on that coverstock.
- I tried pin over center of bridge which is about 75 x 5.5 x 40 for me. That sucker still flared almost 5". It was obscene. Needed almost true medium oil to perform and then it just arced lazily.
 
I think you can use as small a VAL angle to increase response and as large a Drill angle to promote length. Use a long pin-CG to reduce flare or even a flare reducing weigh thole. The stock RG differential on that core is very large (.055" ??) I think it's an inappropriate core for a urethane.
 
I gave up and sold it. Hope you have better luck with it.

Charlest, I agree. I have a purple one drilled 30x4x30 and its super clean on the meds. I was wondering if drilling one 30x5x30 would work. Take a look at my album for pics of the two.
