Title: Anyone using a home made ball spinner?
Post by: wei on February 10, 2007, 04:12:04 PM
I am trying to make one. Its just that the machine have 2800 rpm. Its just plain scary if the ball fly off the the spinner at high speed. Maybe i should just buy one online.

I "built" one from an electronic power drill with 1hp power. Ball cup is self made from a flower pot (blue) and a PVC water pipe end cap (grey, makes also a nice and cheap ball cup) as a water protection.

The drill has 2 gears and a reverse, and I use it on lowest forward gear with about 1.100 RPM, while speed can be controlled manually.

The heart of the whole thing is the sturdy drill mount, the silver thing at the base. Without it, vibrations etc. would not allow a stable work and I'd call it insecure. But for a spinner tour every now and then, it is O.K.

A pic of V1.0 (idea prototype): http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4170407

Current V2.0 has a more rigid workbench base and a vinyl sheet covering everything except the drill's axis with the ball cup.

Very Good idea Dizzy!
I will try your version if I have the equipments.

Just be careful with it! I was lucky to find the matching pieces- esp. the mount as a core piece of stability - but it is IMHO worth a try. I get very good results, even a local pro shop asked where I'd get the smooth sheen surface on my new Frankie May Gryphon get from when I brought it for drilling

I also made experiments with sanding and polishing with my construction, and it works fine. Only drawback is that you always have one hand on the trigger, but overall it is O.K.

Haben will!

(for all the English people out there: this means "I WANT THAT")

Very good idea... Maybe I will build something similar myself from an old powerdrill

I built something similar to what dizzyfugu did except I used my car polisher instead of a drill.  I knew it had plenty of power because I use it when I am rubbing out new paint jobs so I figured it would work.  I clamp it upside down in a workmate vise/bench, set the speed I want and go to work.  I used a rubber plumbing flex coupling as a ball cup. I didn't use anything to sheild the water so it's definitely for outdoor use only but I have used it on numerous balls with good luck.

I'm fixing to make a better spinner soon.  I have a small, high-torque/low speed motor that I am going to mount to a fixed base and use to power a spinner.  I've always been the "do-it-yourself" type so even though you can buy a good spinner at a reasonable price I'd rather build one myself just to say I did it

asura,
Tell me more about your motor. Where did it come from; maybe I can help.

I did not know electric motor comes in 2800rpm unless with a regulator. They normally, especially fractional hp ones comes in 1725 rpm for normal use and 3500 rpm for fan and pump use.

I also thought about a car polisher as a base in the first place. But I found it hard to think of a rigid and stable base for it, and I thi´nk the "unprofessional" models do not have that much torque, nro are they stable enough to hold a rotating ball for long.

From my experience with my "device", a stable base and a rigid construction are very important for safety and handling. Especially high mass bias cores, depending on the rotational axis on the spinner, "want" to move around and create heavy vibrations!

Finally made it... FYI 3 more pics of current V2.0:

The base is an old Black & Decker DIY workbench, it is made of metal and even foldable if need be. The drill mount is fixed with a screw onto the wood panels (see detail pic), and the two sliding panels of the work bench leave space to put the drill through the "table" surface from below while keeping the thing's CG centered and low - a huge step forward against V1.0 which was rather shaky and just a technical test bed for feasability studies .

A vinyl sheet covers everything except for a small hole where the drill mount is located. The grey water pipe end cap on the spinner cup protects the hole well against water drops.

As you can see by the spots, it has already seen some use, and I will put the vinyl a little higher to protect the wall just a little more. Messy business

Finally after  bit of tinkering I've completed the spinner. Turned it on and it spin ok, does not wobble, however havent tried to put any bowling ball on it coz I am still afraid that the ball might fly out.

I did tried it out with a volleyball and guess what, the V ball did flew out at great speed, bouncing off the wall violently. Luckily it did not hit the glass cabinet and the glass window nearby.

I used the pulp milling and centrifugal machine,
freq =50hz,
220V,
Power = 1000 watt,
Speed = 2800rpm

Hope you can see it at the link below:

Cool! Just be careful with a true bowling ball. It is not only heavier than a volley ball, but also not even-weighted. When it spins, the forces that might occur are bigger than expected (and you get an impression why a ball hooks!). I hope the CG of your design is not too high?

I'd be careful with your ball cup design - it looks a little narrow to me on the pic. The ball should be held at a little under its equator for maximum stability, esp. when you sands or polish the sides. I was lucky to find a flower pot that fits very well, even though I am not totally convinced since it is rather thin plastic.

Nevertheless, creative design!

asura,
That must be the world's most expensive spinner. If you check websites on spinners you'll find their bowl speed is around 4 - 600 rpm. More than that the ball will fly off. Remember the ball have inbalance built in.

You must be in asia or England to use 220 V 50hz. single phase

My homemade one uses pulleys and belt to reduce the drum rpm to 500. Ideal after some experimenting.

Go look around the junk shops for a working fractional hp motor. You can get one for under $10.00.

Message me with your email address and I'll send you picts. of mine.

I have heard washing machine motors (incl. mounts) are also 1st choice for a self made spinner? But it is cool to see how much creativity is at work here

Wonderful idea Dizzy, Creative to boot!

Puts a new twist on the term jerry-rig
but this one was well thought out. "Wacko ball spinner", lol

I just love creative ideas; and using the old noggin for a purpose.

Now, I've got this old variable speed electric drill, hmmmmmm!

I used a 2 speed furnace motor and go-Kart axle parts for the shaft, a 1/2 wheel hub for the ball cup. I made a very large cabinet to house everyting. This thing is a beast. 3 hp. You cannot stall it. Used different size pulleys to get RPM to a reasonable speed.

You cannot move it either. Ended up too big and heavy.

I Built one just look exacly like this but found this already made and just need to Add (4) 2.5 lbs bench weight evenly around the edges to spin more. Add a plastic bowl in the Center for the ball. Done!
On the other hand I could just buy a spinner but hey! It's more fun just making one for just under $20 Plus my 2 years old baby love to spin it for me that is Priceless.

I used it everyday to polished and sand my ball.
