Brunswick thumb saver

Has anyone used this product.I am having a terrible time with my thumb tearing.I have tried different pitches,oval,round inserts.

I even tried Vise interchangeable thumb system.

The robby skin patch pulls off after two throws,tape doesn't stay on.

I don't want to bowl with pain anymore.My only hope is this product works.

I have gone to 3 different pro shops to try to correct this problem,no help.

My thumb tears on top at the knuckle.

Easy solution.  Quit knuckling the ball. Thats why its tearing like that. your thumb isnt coming out straight. Your thumb is bent in the thumb hole to squeeze/help hang on. Stop this and you will stop shredding your thumb.

PUT A LITTLE CHAP STICK ON THE BACK OF THUMB IT WILL HELP IT NOT DRAG
WHEN YOU KNUCKLE IT. OR TRY THE THUMB STRAIGHT IT GOES IN THE THUMB AND KEEPS IT FROM BENDING.

#1 - if you are having this problem it should be shown to your pro shop operator / owner and he/she should watch you bowl so they can determine the cause of the friction on your thumb.

there could be many reasons for this:

skin type (moist or dry)
thumb pitch
span
knuckling
turning early during your delivery (this can cause a LOT of the weight to fall on the thumb in the downswing!)


dont forget theres no wrong method to get you comfortable.

you could also try:

many brands of tape (vise, turbo, etc... some you may have tried or not)
chapstick really helps some people. rub a little on your thumb.
magic carpet (some say they like it... i didnt)
misc powders that ive seen pros use (such as wes malott)
and the list goes on.

but if it was me... as ive gone thru this and spent a ton of money and got nothing but frustration in return - get a pro shop guy who you can trust and have a time that he/she can help you solve the problem once and for all. not just watch you for one throw... change something and send you out the door, but help you till the problem goes away. thats what i good pro shop should be able to do. not just take your money.

Update on fixing thumb problem.I went back to the Pro shop i trust and he is going to change the span and pitches.
I am only getting one ball done .This ball will be the test.

I have started using a two  handed no thumb release with a thirteen pound ball.

Its fun to bowl not haveing pain in thumb.The two hande release is diffulcult but it might be my solution.

Thanks to all of you who gave me suggestions to fix this problem.

I have used the thumb saver and for me it was junk, couldn't hold on to the ball at all and it ripped within a week with not that much use.  My thumb used to swell but put new oval thumb insert in and most of my problems have ended.  If you have problems try using Magic Carpet, you can order it a bowl4fun.com, excellent velcro like tape that I used to use.

It's a span problem.  I have a ball that was drilled for a right hand bowler, but they offset my thumb whole to the right when they moved the thumb.  That doesnt work for me.  Sure I dont drop it hardly ever but I get my thumb tore up.  I've since had other balls drilled with the thumb hole slightly to the left of center of my finger holes, what a difference once I got used to it!  Hardly ever a blister or tearing!    Hope that helps!

Even with your new pitch changes, I'd suggest doing one of two things as a precaution:

1.  Put some Valentino's Frankentape on the back of your thumbholes.  It's slicker than owl snot on a brass doorknob and thinner than an Ethiopian monk.  The back of your thumb won't feel any friction at all or

2.  Instead of installing a thumbslug, have your driller fill the 1 and 1/4 hole for the slug with ball plug.  I've done this on a few balls and it works great.  The expoxy is very hard and very slick.  The thumbhole is a little harder to "fine tune" for a perfect fit because the material is so hard, but the final product, once sanded and polished, is really smooth.
