Switch Grip users.....need opinions?
« on: March 22, 2006, 02:50:22 AM »
I've been tinkering with the idea of going to this specially after the disaster at the last tourney i was at.  My thumb swelled to astronomical proportions and i couldnt get out of anything I am one that does not like tape but right now with the way my thumb changes sizes i dont have a choice.  I was thinking of putting the switch grip sleeves in all my balls and then having like four differnt size inner sleeves what do you thing.  Also are they durable do the systems break after a bunch of use or is it pretty solid?  Do you think this would be a good route for me?

Rev,

You should check with Rick (BR name = hchiava1) about the GripLoc product he uses (and distributes). It's the same theory and he has great knowledge of how well it works and it's durability. Hope that helps... Check out his link for samples (cheap!!)

volley i appreciate your opinion but i saw te grip lock uses a smaller insert and the problem with that is that my thumb on its smallest day is bigger than the inner sleeve they use at a inch and a 64th that is my starting size and i reem out from there so dont think that is going to work that why my interest in the switch grip cause they use bigger inserts.

RevLefty,

I have used the switch-grip system in three balls that I have had. All balls that I got from C2, one of the members here. While I do not have a ton of games with the switch-grip, I have found it to be very useful. It has held up well to the things I have done. It is very nice having the same feel in thumbs from ball to ball. The problem you are having would make this system a dream, I have heard of a similar bowler around my town that has five slugs drilled and has all his balls drilled with the system. There may be some who do not care for it, or have encountered problems, but I have been very happy with it.

A team mate of mine uses Switch Grips in about 80% of his balls. According to him, there's very little difference in feel between a slug ( also in some of his balls) and the switch grips.

I do not use them, but he swears by them. His thumb will swell, some, but he likes the fact, like many of these products, that he can go from ball to ball and have the exact same 'feel' as the last ball, according to him.

I have never seen any problems with his, but again, I do not use them, this was all from him.

Maybe that helped.

Just to chime in here,  I recently got my thumb holes redone with the Tom's Thum version of replaceable thumb inserts.  I had them done in Corpus at Nationals by Cecil at the Visionary booth.  The one major plus was that they had oval interchangeable inserts, which to me felt great.  Just thought I'd mention these for you to compare.  Good luck.

I have used Switch Grip for over 6 months now.  It is the best thing for me.  Fit and feel in each ball is exactly the same.  One thing that many may not realize is that you can get the thumbs with a Urethane slug, Vinyl Slug, or blank.  I use the blank ones as I use a vinyl oval thumb insert in these.  Very easy to install (I drill my own stuff) and have not had any issues with breaking.  I have 2 more balls to switch out and my entire arsenal (too many balls) will be done.

I have seen the Tom's Thumb but did not like the fact that you had to use a tool to remove/lock the thumb.  With SwGrip I can switch between balls in practice in less than 5 seconds and have the same fit/feel as the last ball.

The biggest draw back (and it is minor) is that you have to drill a 1 1/2 inch thumb hole for the outer sleeve.  This is not a big deal excpet for when you get rid of the ball and need to plug or slug it.
