I use some running water and an old toothbrush to clean off the 'stuff' that does adhere to the pads, it works just fine and is easy.

Steve,

It depends on how much faith you have in appearances... I use mine for 6 sides of a ball and then discard as they look worn after this amount of use. I know a couple of places where you can get them cheap in the UK (around £0.85 per pad) send me a message if you're interested.

The finer the grit, the easier they wear out, just like sand paper. IMHO, a 4.000 pad is only really good for 2 balls - thereafter I found the pads to lose considerable bite, despite cleaning and using water in the sanding process.
2.000 pads are more stable - I have a pad that has been used on at least 5 balls. It has lost some bite, but the result is still very good.
