Title: Dexter SST8 Traction Sole issue
Post by: JPbowling151 on April 10, 2015, 05:55:19 PM
This may or may not have been mentioned before but has anyone had problems with the tip of their traction sole sometimes getting caught and peeling back while walking on the carpet walking back from the lanes after throwing a shot? I've heard about removing and placing the sole farther back from the leading edge of the toe cap but I still find it catching, I've been thinking about placing black electrical tape over the gap where the sole and shoe connect to prevent the peeling.

Anyone know if the new SST 9 will have an improved toe cap/Velcro system?

Thanks!

The quick answer is yes, lots of toe draggers have this problem, and yes the SST 9's are supposed to address this.  I think there is even an accessory sold to cover the tip of the traction toe.

I had that problem, but that is because of tiles coming up in my home bowling alley. It would catch the front of my traction shoe every time I walked by that spot. Humans are creatures of habit :( anyway, I glued mine back to the shoe with superglue. It holds for a reasonably long time and dries quick

Could just wear a sneaker like Mike Fagan does sometimes when he wants extra push off

Thanks for the help everyone! My SST8's are only a few months old so I don't think I'll rush out and purchase a pair of the new 9's yet. According to Dexter's site they say the toe bumper will extend another 2mm in front of the sole bottom, didn't notice that before. Wonder how that works? That T3 plus attachment looks like something that would work, seems bulky though.

I am a toe dragger.  Decided to sell my SST8 after I went through 3 soles in 4 months.  Switched to 3G Ultras with the toe cap.  Toe cap eventually wore down and the souls just didn't give my the same stability as the SST8.  Went to the Storm SP900 and haven't had any issues.  Toe has a slightly different design than the SST8 and I am not having any issues with the push toe.  Dexter does have a Velcro push toe that you can use in place of the soles.  This eliminates the wearing of the push soles.  It was designed for us toe draggers.

I have not been a fan of adjustable push off feet at all!

That is why I have switched back to SST6s with the Built in push off foot.

The Duratip and Powerstep that comes on the SST6s and my old SST5s....now I like those!  None of the problems listed above.

I still have my SST5's that only had one season on them when I hurt my wrist and laid out for 10 years, till this summer! But will probably needs something newer at the end of next season.

Serial toe draggers tend not to like Dexters, and SST8's in particular. The shoes simply weren't designed for that kind of abuse. I have a small amount of drag, but my last pair of SST8's held up for over 5 years and and several thousand games. I did have to replace the traction sole twice due to wear at the tip, but that's no big deal. The traction sole on my new pair started to split at the tip, but a little Super Glue fixed that.

I did try the strap on velcro push sole on my old pair just to see what it was about, but I didn't like it. It's heavy and bulky. Additionally, the velcro design makes it difficult to position properly. For anyone who tries it, be careful. Wrestling it off can easily bend the rubber shoe sole to the point where it cracks. That's what finally killed off my first pair.

As an aside, I can't agree more with the bolded point above. Despite the warts of the SST8's, they provide stability you can't get with 3G Ultras. For me, having the additional support is a no brainer.
