Title: HypaFix Tape for Thumb
Post by: MI 2 AZ on January 04, 2004, 02:08:01 AM
This post is to let anyone who is interested, in trying out a medical tape called HypaFix to use as a replacement for NuSkin or court plaster to cover sore spots on the thumb.  HypaFix is a thin, flexible white tape that I learned about when I attended a Ritger Clinic.  It was used by the instructor, Bob Rea, to cover sore spots on the students thumbs since we were bowling about 10-12 games per day for four days and many of the students were not used to that amount of games.  I found that it helped to prevent any blisters from forming, much like NuSkin, but it did not have to be reapplied as often as NuSkin.  I always had the problem with the NuSkin wearing away after bowling for awhile but the HypaFix tape held up and was easy to apply.

I have also heard that some bowlers use the tape to facilitate a quicker, cleaner release.  I am not using it for that purpose so cannot comment on that use of it.

I purchased a  2 inch x 10 yards roll of HypaFix tape and found that I am probably not going to use it all up for quite a while since I am only cutting out a ½ inch wide piece of the tape to use on my thumb each time.  So if anyone wants to try a sample of the HypaFix tape, I am willing to mail out a sample, if you send me a mailing address by message.  If you wish to purchase HypaFix tape, please call the manufacturer at 1-800-876-1261 to find the nearest outlet.  It may be available in a medical supply store.  I am not associated with the company nor do I sell it.  Since I am not as knowledgeable as others on this site about different balls, ball drillings, or bowling tips, this is my way of helping out.

After you try the tape out, please post back here and let others know your findings, good and bad, about the tape.  That way, other bowlers can use that information to their benefit.  ______________________________________________________________________

I had originally posted the above in the Misc Bowling forum early last year.  I still have some tape left if anyone else wants to try a sample of it, just send me a mailing address by PM here.

This tape is also useful for when you are just breaking in a Magic Carpet for the first time.  It helps relieve the initial tenderness that you may experience on the back of the thumb from the Magic Carpet, especially if you are a first time user of the Magic Carpet.

--------------------
Edited to add:

Best way to use Hypafix tape is to apply it lengthwise on your thumb, not wrapped around like a ring, and whenever possible to anchor one end on the nail.  It should last at least two to four games but may not stick as well on people with real sweaty hands.

Other tapes are available which may work better for you.  HypaFix is really thin so would be good for someone with a tight thumbhole or really swollen thumb.  If you have the room for other tapes, some alternatives are:

_________________________________________________________________________

I found that the HypaFix peeled away from my skin fairly quickly, probably because I'm applying it to the inside of my thumb, to cover a callous I get there. It's difficult to get the tape to lie completely flat.

I've been using an alternative for a few months now, called Perfect Patch, by Ebonite. It's much stronger than the other tapes I've used (although I haven't tried the Vise tapes yet), and the adhesive is very sticky, almost too sticky. When you're done, you have to peel it off your thumb, and some adhesive residue gets left behind. That's no big deal for me.

Perfect Patch comes in 10-to-a-pack polybags. They're 3" long, so I cut them in half, which gives me 20 tapes per bag. It's available from Bowlingindex.com for $3.50 per bag.

____________________________________________________________________________

I have some ABS tape which looks very close to the Vise. The ABS tape will last until you take it off. I anchor it to my thumbnail and only have it on the back of my thumb. It's too slick to wrap the whole way around my thumb. If you like a super tight thumb, you could wrap the tape on both side of your thumb and still get a clean release. The HypaFix is thinner and falls apart after 3-5 games. I only use the tape if I've been bowling a lot and my thumb is a little raw, and I have to bowl a long game format tourney. I prefer to use nothing, but I'd rather protect my thumb than take a chance of it tearing.

From Excaliber:
I wanted to try various tapes for a long time and never did because I know how much my hand sweats while I bowl. I mentioned this to a few guys from Vise. They hooked me up with a bottle of some stuff called "Benzoine Tincture" (probably spelled wrong). This stuff is actually used to stop spreading of cold sores. Clean the area where you want the tape, apply the Benzoine Tincture (I keep Q tips in my accessory bag) where you are going to put the tape wait about 15 seconds for it dry and then put the tape on.

I could only get roughly 3-5 frames before tape would start falling off....I can bowl 10 games and the tape stays on now. The only other thing I had to do other than applying the Benzoine Tincture is round off the square edges of the tape.

I have found this stuff in local grociery stores/ pharmacies for $4-$6 a bottle. It is well worth it and a bottle will last you a long time.

Hope this info helps.

I have also used the Hpyafix tape at a Ritger Camp. Have tried to get it locally with no success. Found some thing called mefix which the Drugist said was the same thing. It did not work the same. Thanks for the PH #. Frank

Sounds interesting. Is this hypafix dressing retention tape? If so, it can be purchased on the internet. Please post back and let us know.

Yes, I believe that is what it is called.  I know it is available in medical supply stores and on the internet which is where I found mine.  Apparently it has been around for quite some time as this article shows:

SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
TECHNIQUE OF SPLIT SKIN GRAFT FIXATION USING HYPAFIX: A 15-YEAR REVIEW
R. Bruce Davey , Anthony L. Sparnon and Michelle Lodge

The technique of graft fixation with Hypafix was introduced in 1986 and has since been adapted for use in all sites to become the standard technique in the management of paediatric burns at the Women's and Children's Hospital Burn Unit. The technique is versatile, safe, simple, reliable and inexpensive, and has proven to be effective in over 700 burn patients, with 18 patients (2%) requiring repeat grafts. The patient's care is continued in a designated Burn Scar Assessment Clinic with a range of 'contact media', including Hypafix, Elastofix, silicone gel and Elastomer products, being applied as necessary.

I get mine from above. Paid C$ 9.89 a roll of 2" X 30'.

Insist on "Hypafix" . All the other  "....fix" lets the adhesive sip through and interferes with your release. This finding is from experience.

used it for a while, great if you have an open blister on your thumb, it will protect it somewhat.  however, as everyday tape, for 3 games of league, not a big deal, but if you plan on using it in a longer format tournament, the adhesive will bleed through causing your thumb to hang slightly.  gets worse as you go.  when i used it, i would replace it every 3 games or so.  using the vise grip stuff now, adhesive does not bleed through, but does not stick to my thumb as well (especially if your hand sweats a little).  hope this helps.

jj420,bowl400,

About the adhesive not holding up and bleeding through, Hypafix is way better than medfix and others brands.

Was just thinking if you have that problem where theres rub on the hypafix. Would'nt the rub be on your thumb if you do not use a tape protection?

I use it all the time to cover a scar on my thumb. I do not need the protection now but I find having it gives me confidence of a clean release, my revs and my pinfall improves.

I have also found that, like many thumb tapes, it sticks much longer and better if you first clean your thumb's skin surface with alcohol applied to some clean cloth.

Never tried it on the fingers but on my thumb I had to protect the back and attached it from the thumbnail down over the knuckle.  I can send you a sample to try if you want.  Just PM me your mailing address but do it quick.  I have to go to KC for a school shortly.

I was hoping this thread was still around...

has anyone who has used the Hypafix tape also used the Vise performance tape, or the new Turbo tapes?

I recently tried the Vise tape, and love the feel it gives...but of course it costs a little more than it probably should. I remember seeing this thread and got to thinking...so has anyone compared them?

i recieved a sample of the hypafix tape from mi 2 az about a week ago. I tested it out for 9 games, simulating a long tournament format. The tape all in all held up quite well. The tape never really wore through, but it did start to fringe up at the edges from dirt and various things. It protected my thumb very well, and actually my release felt much better with the tape on. It filled up a little extra space in my thumbhole where i usually put white tape, but this stuff seemed to work better than the white tape. it just seemed much more natural, kind of hard to describe.

i got a roll of this stuff from my mother, since she is a nurse and has some at her work, and used it at my league today. i shot 646, wasnt very happy with the score, but the tape worked out very well. It is a nice tape for protecting sensitive parts of your skin, and i think a much better alternative to regular tape in yhr thumbhole. i will be trying ron c's magic carpet soon, and should be able to compare the two. Thanks again mi 2 az for clueing me in to this nice product.

stanski,
I use Hypafix and Magic Carpet on all my balls. They work really well together. The slight tightness you feel initially does not affect release and helps with relaxing grip force giving a more relax swing and increase revs.

You're welcome.  I hope it survives the trip (doesn't get wet).

It is a thin medical tape, not really designed to withstand the rigors of bowling and for some people it just doesn't seem to adhere for long.  It might be because of perspiration but for me it will last at least three games.  If you can find it in your area, it is a cheap alternative to some of the other bowling thumb tapes.

Hypafix didn't work for me. It rolled up, and off my thumb after 2-3 shots. My thumb is very moist. I passed it onto to a friend...worked great for him.

Thanks again for the sample.

Duke,

I see the same thing here.  It works great for me and several others but for a few it doesnt seem to want to stick for long.  It seems to be mainly due to heavy perspiration.  Sometimes it is because the tape was not applied properly (lengthwise) but was put on around the thumb like a ring.

That's why I am willing to send out samples so that someone doesnt spend $15 on something that wont work for them.

Start the tape at the tip of your thumb and back. Covering the whole thumbnail. That'll stop the tape rolling off.
You can use 2 layers if you're playing more than 3 games.
I've use it for about 4 years and have no problem.
I also have a Canadian source which you can buy from if you wish to purchase them.
