Title: I was taken out by a pair of Dexters!
Post by: htownstaff on June 19, 2008, 11:34:22 PM
I've used Dexters for years and have never had a problem with any of the numerous pairs I've owned.

This past weekend at our state tournament, I throw a ball of practice and decide I need a bit more brake.  I go back to the bag and put the Ultra Brakz #2 on.  I walked all over it and pushed it down as I usually would to make sure the heel was secure.  I grab my ball and I'm off to the line for the second ball of practice.  I started into my slide and MY HEEL PEELED OFF!  That's right...peeled off from front to back.  DOWN GOES HTOWN!  DOWN GOES HTOWN!  All 6'3" 300 lbs of htownstaff hit the deck in the form of a split.  I am now dealing with a nasty bruise on my left hip and fluid which will be removed from my right knee today.  Upon further investigation of the heel which was fairly new, the inside front corner doesn't want to stick.  All other heels stick perfectly fine.

Anyone else having this problem?  This little fall might be enough to send me back to Global...even though I hated my Tour Ultras (too narrow and heels & soles just weren't durable)...perhaps we'll give etonic a try or roll back to Linds.

sorry to hear about your fall Brian.  That's one of my biggest fears.  I am currently using Etonics and love them.  With that said, be advised that I didn't change my heal often when I used Dexters.  But I like the shoe.

Would love to contact Dexter about it, but the last issue I had was never addressed by them.  It was merely a sizing question.  I tried calls and e-mails.  Good product...bad service.

Thanks Greg...
I'm hoping that I'll be back in a few days after they get this garbage out of my knee.

Yo Krantz,

Due to the lack of arch support (was gelin' ) in my Dexters, I switched to Tour Ultras and really love them!!!  The TU's are lighter and heel/sole combo works well for me.  Though they're not as wide as my Dexter 6 LX, the leather is giving and doesn't pose a problem.  Only gripe is heel durability.  I'll more than likely cut the soles of my Dexters to fit my TU's should I need them.

Tried on my Dexters and quite honestly, don't feel I'll ever go back to them.

Vern

P.S.  Hope the knee gets better

I have two pair of 6LX...one brand new and the other used.  The incident happened while wearing a pair of the R,W,B Anniversary Limited SST's...4's I guess they are.

I killed my Ultras when I had them.  They were comfy, but I like the wide platform of the Dexters.

Brian, I'm about your size, and I swithched from Dexter's to Etonic's back in the winter and could not be happier.  The Etonics are wide enough to comfortably fit, and offer great support and durability, I'll never switch back!

Trying to recall...do Etonics offer wide sizes?

Hmmm...could be worth consideration.  I'll likely wear my new 6LX for the upcoming year.  I wanted the RWB Limited Editions for something different.  Those things in size 13 look like clown shoes. lol

I know Etonic scrapped the changeable heel a while ago.  Did they ever bring it back?  I just don't follow Etonic and we don't move them in the shop.

As far as I know they still don't have interchangable heels, but I've bowled in many different places with a mix of wood and synthetic approaches and have had no braking problems so far...

I just got my SST 8's yesterday. bowled with them today and they are great. If they last as long as my last ones I will be pleased. Sorry I am a Dexter man for now.

BTW, Smoky you got some big feet! LOL! Just joking.

Don't know if this is worth anything or not, but at the beginning of the Open in ABQ I bought a pair of Brunswick Classics to replace my SST7 LXs.  The shoe is made by Dexter and uses Dexter's soles and heels, but the Brunswick footbed offers more stability, a roomier toe box, and a more durable upper.  I was leary at first just because they were Brunswick, but five months later I couldn't be happier.  They look brand news, and I'm on the lanes at last four to five times a week.

My husband has the beginning of arthritis in his toes and ankle, and before the Open is over, we plan to go get him fitted with a pair of the Brunswicks, too.

Might be worth considering.

Deb

On edit:  The velcro seems to grab better on these shoes.  I really have to work to get the heel off to swap them out.

I pulled my tendon when my heel fell off.

That's the problem with dexter velcro, use at your own risk. ABS's idea to put the inter locking triangle in the heel and the border was a very smart idea.

Nice thing to have interchangeables...but apparently risky if something isn't right.

Since I had no problems with my previous 6 LX, I'm going to break out the new pair.  I love the look of the Anniversary Limited SST's, but I'm not about to fall on my arse again.

These things sometimes have dirt in the Velcro or old age etc.

There is no doubt that all of these brands have occassional adhesion problems.

There is a possibility that they may have a user limit of 6'2" and 260 pounds...over that it may be safer to use non adjustable shoes!

Do you look anything like Michelle Wie doing a split on a balance beam?

No grace in my gymnastics lefty.
As for adhesion issues.  I've never had them until this one pair of shoes.  I'm sure we'll move on and things will be ok.  I'd hate the thought of going back to a pair of Linds.

As for size limits on the shoes...if they did that, shoe sales would be cut by 2/3.

I have seen two guys have problems with the heels on Dexter's and they were of the larger build persuasion! I've never had any trouble with them only that they didn't last as long as my 3G/Dyno's or Etonic's. My Etonic Dress are really nice, but they don't have a interchangeable heel. Good luck

2/3 of the bowlers over 260?

We are bigger than I thought!

REgards,

Luckylefty
PS does one of the Lopez brothers know what Michelle Wie would look like in the split position on the balance beam?  They are  6 foot 11 would one of you other guys ask them?

Dang, Bro! Hope you're ok. Sounds like you were within a half inch of bruising your stones...

I have the ABS ultras and don't like the heels much...too soft. The toe cap on the non slide shoe wore out in less than 3 months and now it flops of when I'm trying to push into my slide from the power step. I peeled off the velcro today and used contact cement. DARN THING WILL STAY PUT NOW!

Otherwise they are great comfortable shoes. I was considering going to the Dexters next time. Just goes to show that nothing is perfect.

Glad to hear that your were not seriously injured.  There is a stress limit
on almost everything.  Maybe you should consider this a warning and do some-
thing to get yourself into better physical condition.  It would probably
help in many ways.
