This Bowlers product is great!  It definitely helps getting the feel of a tight thumb hole. I use (meant used - [corrected as per critique] in down thread post) it as a training device.

The bowling product helps in keeping the thumb in the proper position. A straight thumb with no thumb crimping.

I did however, find them rather problematic in humid conditions or during the heat of the summer. I suppose as an adjustment one might use chap stick or lip balm on the back of the thumb, or a cooling agent of some sort to counteract such heat related problems. (never went that far with it - just re drilled smaller thumb hole urethane slug and tailored the back of thumb hole to my specific knuckle with a workout tool -thus I'm not currently using the product - I STILL SPEAK HIGHLY OF THE PRODUCT - and of Ron Clifton!)

Bottom line, the product allowed me to SEE the merits of a tighter snug thumb hole, ie, relaxing my grip, recognition of the perfect release, and free arm swing.
IMHO, all elite or scratch bowlers should strive for a tighter snug thumb hole in an effort to keep the speed up, and have a crisp fresh release.

The Magic Carpet is a GREAT Product!

It rocks.  I'm about 15 pins above where I was last year, and I should get better.  I can finally have a snug-fitting thumb that won't bind up on me, and allows me to "hit" the ball at the bottom of my arm swing.

So when you bowl in competition, you DO NOT use them?  Is this the same logic that says a wrist support is a "training device"?  Frankly, I use both to great effect.  It just irritates the crap out of me when people say they are "crutches".  Your reply please.

Sorry, I believe your reading WAY to much into the Post. Please read it again.
Maybe, it was my bad. said use meant used....past tense. In context, reading the whole post, I said I am currently not using them anymore, doesn't mean I won't.

No mention of a crutch, not even inferring it, btw; ONLY PRAISE! and my personal experiences with the product.

thanks for allowing me to clarify

Did you guys make your thumb hole alot bigger? Ron sent me a piece of this stuff a few year ago and there was no way I could get my thumb out the ball with the carpet in the hole. The fit was way too tight. I wasn't about to have a ball that fit perfect drilled so I could it?

I was using so much tape to try to get a decent feel, that I didn't need to expand the thumb hole at all.

same with me... used the Carpet and removed most of the tapes I had in there before... nice snug fit.

Does anyone have a picture of bowling ball with the magic carpet in it? I want to see what it looks like in the thumb hole. I brought one a while ago, but it didn't feel right, maybe I was putting it in wrong.
Thanks much

Don't have a picture on an actual installed Magic Carpet but I copied the instructions off of Ron's site:

Stick your thumb and fingers in the ball and see where the knuckle of your thumb touches the back of the thumb hole. That is where you want to install the Magic Carpet. Remove the backing from the Magic Carpet and place it in the back of the thumb hole where your knuckle made contact. Place it about ¼ inch below the top if the thumb hole. When you are sure youhave the Magic Carpet in the right position press firmly to activate the strong glue. When it is time to replace your Magic carpet it should come out without leaving a glue mess behind.

You may add bowler 's tape to the front of the hole as needed to snug it up. If you prefer you may add the tape under the Magic Carpet. The Magic Carpet has a 3  to 5 game break in period and may redden the thumb a little during this time. After the break in period the redness will go away unless the thumb hole is way too tight or you knuckle the ball.
People with small thumb holes may need to trim the width with scissors. The thumbhole may appear to be tight, but many people have noted that the ball may actually fall off their hand early.  Always test the ball by rolling it slowly from the foul line the first time to prevent any mishaps.
Theres a diagram on the Magic Carpet web page under Installation Instructions, midway down on the page (http://"http://www.bowl4fun.com/magiccarpet/magiccarpet.htm")

hope it helps - maybe somebody has a photo of a ball with the product installed.

I received my Magic Carpet recently too but haven't had a chance to bowl with it yet. I think I need to tighten up my thumb hole with a little more tape but right now it feels pretty good. I'm fairly snug but me thumb seems like it will come out with no problems (testing at home).

I have been using it for just over a year.  I started out with it the size it comes in, but have since started using it trimmed to 3/4".  I also put a white tape with the top 1/2" cut off behind the carpet.  I still use white tape in front, anywhere from 1 - 4 pieces depending on the amount of thumb swell.  I love it!

I have my thumb hole drilled larger.. I use a piece of tape under the CARPET and 1 piece of white tape in front.. I'm usually going from 1 to 2 in front depending on if my thumb swells or not..  I'll check my pictures to see if you can see one or not..  Mine will last depending on how many games on that one ball, around 2 months before I need to start using more tape or not.. then I switch it out with fresh CARPET..

I do have pictures that you can see the carpet, but not up close to make a judgment or not you might like it..  Just looks like white tape in the ball..

If you didn't try it yet, ask Ron for samples, what I did and sure lots others did before me.. Good luck..

Yes thumb hole will have to be slightly larger.

But, who does not use tape?  If you already use tape it should not be a problem.  If your ball is tight to start how do you use it when your thumb swells?

I think the last post nails it.

The magic carpet is equal to about 3 to 4 pieces of tape in back.

Therefore if you have been using less...one often has to open up the back of the thumb about 2 white tape thicknesses.

Most people do this on one ball and if they don't like it....don't open up any other holes.  However most people like it!

MC's is equal to about 4-5 pieces of white bowler's tape.  There will be some redness to the back of your thumb.  It is a different feel and will keep you from knuckling the ball or should help.

I will say once you get used to MC....you'll become addicted to the stuff.

MC compresses some so you don't need to pull it to add tape behind it.  That's the beauty of it.  I use Switch Grips <2 of them one smaller and one larger> and I'll get at least 100 games before I change it sometimes more.

I love the stuff. Did not have to make thumb hole bigger. However, the
more I bowl and practice the more my thumbhole shrinks in size. It is very
snug now with forward pitch. Relax that thumb and you will be surprised
how snug and comfy the thumbhole becomes over time.

Magic Carpet + snug thumb hole + no grip pressure = better bowling.

I just placed an order for my second batch of carpet.  I love the stuff..always had a problem of oval thumb and circular hole (don't have milling machine).  Previously I would drill my thumb a size bigger and then build up white tape in the front and black in the back (about 3 whites and 6 blacks) to make an oval.  Now, I drill the hole 1 size larger, slide a piece of carpet in the back and maybe one piece of white in the front and its perfect.  I always have had trouble with my thumb swelling (most noticible with my spare ball becasue mid-way through the night it would start hanging, causing me to pull spare shots).. not any longer.. my spare conversion has increased dramatically.. really helps with a clean/consistant release.  Something that everyone can appreciate.  Really a great product.

I just put some magic carpet in the wifes equipment for the first time, she's only rolled about 9 games with it so far but absolutely loves it.  Her thumb was a bit sore after the first set last week but a little liquid patch fixed that up, she didn't have any problems today at all.
