Title: Thumb tapes with the best adhesive?
Post by: Buckwild on September 26, 2011, 12:33:18 AM
I was wondering which brand of tape that you put on your thumb stays on your thumb longer, Vise, Turbo, or any other brand?

I see a bigger difference between roll tape and individual pieces of tape, sold in batches of 40 than between brands of tape. I find the individual piece stick to my thumb with no problem for 4 - 8 games. Pieces that I cut off a roll last 1 - 2 games. I am not sure why as they should be the same tape and glue. I have been using Vise-Grip's Hadda patch tape for several years now with no problems. Brunswick and Turbo seem equally good. Been using Vise for a while so I just stick with it.

I guess I have oily skin or something, because even though I wash my hands well with soap, it still starts to peel off even during warm up. I even tried with dishwashing liquid to cut the grease, and even tried cleaning with alcohol. Although it does stick a little better, it still doesn't even last one game. I've tried them all and pretty much the same result.  Just gotta keep replacing them as they come off. I don't use thumb tape all the time now that I use Magic Carpet.

I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not.

Can you buy this at a drugstore like Duane Reade, Walgreens, Rite Aid or CVS?

You might be able to.  Make sure that it is the Compound Tincture of Benzoin (CBT) as there are three different versions of Benzoin and I am not sure if all three will give the same result.  The local drugstores in my town did not carry it when I checked.

Turbo sells a product that is supposed to remove moisture from the skin and aid tape in sticking to your hand.  I attached the link the product is at the bottom of the page.  I haven't tried it personally, also I have found that after cutting the length I want from a roll, rounding the corners helped it stick a little better.  If you notice that all the pre-cut strips are round.

Yes, rounding helps prevent the sharp corners from peeling away catching on something.  Also, if applying to the backside, anchoring on the nail helps to keep it on longer.

Could this be because the  individuals are fresher?  Perhaps the large rolls are made in one big  batch, then sit around until they sell both in the warehouse and then in  the proshop?  They probably don't sell as fast as the smaller packages.

I agree with charlest....

I used to use "thumb" tape till I went back to the carpet tape. Two different tapes btw......

I still have a roll of (the ones you cut to size and shape) tape that I stopped using because they never stayed on long enough to finish a set (3 games). I started using batches which stayed on longer on my thumb. But, ultimately I went back to carpet tape sold by Ron Clifton. Best thing I've used to keep a tight thumb without getting stuck.

Well, stop eating all that fried chicken just before league!!

Just kidding. I also tried that Benzoin Tincture compound a few years back. It's used in medicine to help make bandages stick better, among other things. It does work but is kind of messy.I used it with the roll thumb tape but found I didn't need it when I went to individual piece of tape.

I got mine in a supermarket (Pathmark) pharmacy. They had to order it but it was cheap. I don't remember the exact price. Still got the remainder of the silly bottle.
FYI It's 80% alcohol so 90% of the efficacy of it is probably due to the alcohol, but that's not a medical opinion.  (no smiley face)

You might also try using some 91% alcohol to clean the surface of your thumb just before applying the thumb tape. (Do NOT use acetone!!!)

I don't think so, Gary. I have tried several types of three different brands before I tried the individual Hada Patch tape from Vise-Grip. Not all of them could have been old.And the ones I bought were not the 500 piece rolls.

I think if you look at the patches compared to the rolls the thickness and texture seems different.  For instance the hada patches material is not sold in a roll and cut form.  That could also be a factor, although I am not 100% sure on that.

For days when my thumb is swollen, I have had good success with the 2in Black Turbo tape roll thats supposed to be for fingers.  I  used the 2in width as the length, and would cut a piece a little wider than normal roll tape and after rounding the corners the extra surface area seemed to help it stick better, the tape would last me the whole set.  I wonder if you bought the tackier 2in roll tape and apply the same technique if that would help out.

Thanks for the info on the Benzoin and the No Sweat. I'll look for the Benzoin at my local CVS. I have the No Sweat, but I never tried using that before putting on the thumb tape. Not sure if it'll help the adhesive stict or
make it worse, but I'm gonna give it a try and report back later.

I use the flesh colored, Nichiban, Made in Japan.
It's the only tape that sticks to my thumb....I've tried them all.
I have really moist skin. this stuff stick for 3 games. I cut it, anchoring it on the thumb nail, about 1/4". Cut it with tails that wrap around, below the base of my thumb, just a bit.

Checked my local stores for the benzoin and none of them carry it. Just ordered a couple of small 1 oz bottles, so I'm gonna try that.

Did you get a chance to use the No Sweat before you put on the tape?

I have to try it again.  I tried it once a while ago and I remember that the thumb tape still didn't stick very well, but I want to try it again, but making sure I wash my hands really well and let the No Sweat dry completely first.  Haven't had a chance to go bowl yet and might not be able to go until at least Sunday.  But I will try it on Sunday and post back after.  Shoots!

Artimust,

I tried the No Sweat last night before league. It didn't work. The tape didnt stick well at all. I used a alcohol packet and that helped. I am going to order the CTB online, I didnt see it at CVS or Duane Reade.

I use Turbo's skin patch. This is a 2" wide roll so you cut a slice to fit the back side of the thumb to fit. I do this as 1" wide roll tape is not enough to cover where I want coverage. This stuff will not allow moisture through the tape and never fallen off in over 4 seasons of use. Worst case is it will roll up if an edge catches. It comes off but not easy and always leave a bit behind so it will stick to any clean skin surface. The skin patch is black, thin and super slick for a consistent release.

I really like the Nichiban tape also.  Works great for me.

One thing my girlfriend does is add a bit of skin patch to the edges of the tape to help it stick.  She even used a very small bit of super glue during the Open because it was hot in the bowling center and it was an 8 game block.  Lasted the whole time too.  But a lot of people don't like using super glue.

I got my order of bz compound yesterday and tried it today at practice.  Used a cotton swab to put on the liquid, let it dry for a few seconds and slapped on the thumb tape. It went on good, but I think I didn't put on enough or didn't let it dry long enough,  because a couple small parts didnt stick completely. But 95% of it did, and the tape lasted 5 games. I didn't even wash my hands thoroughly before doing this, so with clean hands, letting the bz dry, then putting on the tape, I think this is the best solution for those like me who have hands that tape don't stick very well.
On a side not, I thought that it would smell bad and actually be sticky, but it's a very thin brown colored liquid that kind of smells like cinnamon. :)

I know it sounds like I'm in denial, but I'm not.
