Vacu Grips
« on: July 25, 2006, 08:42:14 AM »
The proshop recently received the Vise Vacu
Grips... To anyone that has used or installed
them... Vise says to used the grips two sizes
smaller??!! Do the grips really expand that much
if your fingers go up and down in size?? I find
that hard to believe...

I have 2 balls that I cannot use if my fingers swell.  After talking with Andy while in North Carolina, I am in the process of having the Vacu Grips put in one of them.

I talked to my ball driller and he said that same thing about them being as much as 2 sizes smaller.  I'll be going in either tomorrow or Thursday to fit the grips.

I have tried them out, my local pro uses them exclusively, and several proshop customers use a "hybrid" version of the vaccu-grips.  I think its based upon personal preference.  With the "regular" vaccu-grips, two sizes were too tight for me.  I preferred using 1.5 sizes smaller (normal grips are 47/64 and 45/64... and I would use 11/16 and 21/32).  I found that the clear grips seemed to work better as they tended to have a little more elasticity than the regular grips.
With that being said, I didn't really like them.  I found that because they were tight on my fingers, I tended to "grab" the ball at the bottom of the swing.  I guess I just had trouble getting my fingers out cleanly.  Our local pro is a lower rev player and he loves them (I think they help him get a little more on the ball).
We have several customers who like a hybrid version of the vaccu-grips.  They drill the finger holes 1 size larger than normal (1"), don't use the plastic vaccu-sleeves, and only use grips 1/2 to 1 size smaller (and only glueing them at the bottoms like normal).  The larger hole gives the grips room to expand, but not to the extent of the regular vaccu's.  With the smaller holes and not using the sleeve, I don't think you get as much of a vacuum on the fingers.. maybe helping to get out easier?

I have these in every ball I own. When my fingers really swell, I have no problems with the grips. They expand with no problem. I wouldn't suggest using the little plastic ring at the bottom, as it is a pain to get out. The main thing that needs to happen is that the bottoms of grips are completely glued because. If not, you won't get the full vacuum effect. Also, I wouldn't glue and portion of the top of the grip to the ball, let it float.
