Pin action
« on: February 06, 2007, 05:49:40 PM »
I've watched lots of PBA tourney via the YouTube and noticed that most of the Pros have huge/lots of pin actions. Im just curious, Is there any secrets or techniques for having the huge pin action? Is it the revs, speed or the weight of the ball? care to explain?

ps: I really like it when the tripper(pin 2) hit the 10 pin

It is the result of many factors which you can reduce to "They made a good hit". You will also witness "good" shots when you play - lots of pin action, messenger flying around, the impression of a pin implosion on the deck with a quick hard sound.

This comes from the proper entry angle of the ball into the pocket (not too steep, not too shallow), a proper match of revs and speed for the condition at hand, plus a ball that has the right surface to deliver its energy when ist needed - when it enters the pin deck. The drilling might also be a concern, but it is a minor one.

Good players should be able to figure out quickly what works well and what not, and be able to repeat this solution consistently. Nevertheless, the "perfect" result can be achieved in several ways, so it is a matter of style how the golden path to the pocket looks like. What works for one player must not work for another.

Agreed, but also the lanes are set up quite a bit different then for the average bowler. The side boards are tightened up along with the back wall, also new pins are utilized to insure huge pin action. Although they still have to make shots and are the most skilled players around. I have been to quite a few Pro Tourneys and watched them set up the T.V. pairs and believe me the lanes are not the same as what they are before set up, everything is gone over with a microscope and adjusted to perfection to create the best shot making for the cameras.

Now that you mentioned about lane set up, I just remembered a proshop worker in Phillipines talking something about the pin deck /backend area was being tilted up  a bit to maximise pin actions. (tilted up in minute degrees but the pin will still stand). And I thought he was kidding!
