Ball advice...

I've been throwing a Toxic all Summer. My avg has increased from 150 to 168. The last three weeks I've thrown 190 or better as a avg.

Here is the problem. Today my Toxic wouldn't break like it has been at the same lanes. I slowed it down, cranked it, reved it and still couldn't get it to break hard to the pocket like it has been. I clean it after every practice and league. Any ideas on what to try next? Could it have been the lanes today?

Also I'm looking for a ball to compliment this one. The lanes I bowl are medium to dry lanes, any input would be appreciated. This also would help me understand if its the ball or lanes, or me.

i would assume it is the ball & the way the lanes were dressed. If the problem persists , i would advise consulting with your pro - shop operator for an analysis of your ball . the ball may need to be resurfaced.

I love my Toxic but also saw a drop in reaction mid season last year. I knocked mine down to 2000 and it was night and day. Talk to your pro shop and see if that may be something you'd need to do to it. If you are on the dry side, look at the Cherry Vibe or the Bash. There are sever other balls that are good on dryer lanes, just depends on the company you like and amount of $'s you want to spend.

AZ who makes the Bash?

So have you had any problems with your Toxic since you took it down? Did it start reading like it did right out of the box when you did?

Unfortunately there is no definitive way to bring a ball back to the original out of the box reaction.  You can try to give it a hot water bath (soak in a hot water bucket for intervals of 15 min) or if your local shop has the technology, Use one of the low heat machines (Rejuvenator or Reviver).

After taking it down it did great, like OOB ? to be honest, I really didn't remember, I have had no other problems with it. BUT, the lanes are a tad dryer than during the season ( league) and I really can't say if it'll be OOB until next week when we start again and the oil is close to what it was last year.

We use a military lanes so they cut down during the summer to save $'s . Go in one day and it's great, next day is dry as a bone, so hard to say but I like the Toxic better at 2000 than 4000 (OOB).

So the ball is back to breaking and hitting the pocket. It was oil saturation. My bowling shop pro tried renewal and it helped some. I did my dishwasher treatment and its back to normal. I also did this with my Vibe and same effect. I didn't relize how much oil both balls were collecting.

No one really does realize what a ball will absorb. If I were you, I'd get some PowerHouse Clean N Dull and use it on them after every set or so. That's something only you will know when it seems to be 'lacking'. I use it on mine and my wife's balls after every set ( No Mercys, V2 Sanded, Toxic) just to keep as much oil out as possible.

You read my mind. I was going to ask you what you used as a cleaner to get the oil out of the ball.

Where have you found to be the cheapest place to buy the cleaner?

I have to admit what my Pro shop guy used, renewal, was impressive. I need to find the brand of what he was using as well. After he used it, the ball looked like OOB new.

How do you know whne your ball is oil free?

I ran my Toxic thru the dishwasher and it played better.

I just set it out in the sun yesterday, it was like 80/85, for an hour and there was oil still coming out of the ball.

My oven doesn't go low enough to try that method.

Any new ideas?

I am a noob and I have an used track silencer resurfaced to around 400 grit and since I was stupid I didn't clean it for like 20-30 games and it went all dead on me so I first scrubbed it with dish detergent (soft "scrubber") and then dryed it with a soft cotton towel, I did this afew times til it felt flat again and then I used hot water on another towel to make sure the dish detergent was gone and it worked almost as it should so after just 4 more games I did this again and now it works as it should again so from now on I will clean it once with dish detergent and water after every day I play and then from time to time I will put it in a sink with water and dish detergent for 10-15 minutes and then dry it off. I think this will work quite well.

Congratulations on being a member of the Hammer/Ebonite oil-sucking family.  Their new covers are real sponges but require a lot of maintenance.  If you don't clean it well regularly, kiss it goodbye.

You can get a bottle of Track's Clean & Dull from Buddies for about $10.  Works very well and you can use it during competition if you have to.  C&D used to be a Track product before the Ebonite/Columbia buyout; now it's a Powerhouse product but I haven't seen the PH version available (at Buddies).  It's the same stuff, though.
