ball choice help
« on: January 08, 2006, 09:44:00 AM »
Okay, i'm a sophmore in high school and bowl a saturday league and bowl for the high school team.

I have a 158 average with my Ebonite Tornado (hate it with a passion). I throw a hook ball thats very consistent but the ball is holding me back. i have a medium ball speed, med-high axis rotation and i get med-high revolutions, i'm looking for a medium oil ball with good hook that can last me a while (i'm hoping to get through high school with it) so what ball(s) would you reccomend for me, thanks in advance (i have no preferences in brand but storm, ebonite, and brunswick are the only ones avaliable around my location so i would prefer one of them)

What type of reaction do you prefer?
(skid-snap, strong arc, smooth, or something in between)
Which Tornado do you have and what is the surface prep if not out of box.

FC's suggestions may work for you but from what I have seen the Smokin is very snappy and can be tough to control and the Big Bully is better on med/hvy to hvy.

I won't make suggestions without knowing what type of reaction you prefer.

i have the red/orange/black tornado reactive and it was an okay ball at best, i wouldn't reccomend it to anyone, my preference would be more of a smoother hook, and also i am not too sure if i'm really ready for a high performance ball yet i still have room to improve and after talking to my coach i'm looking into a storm hybrid or super stock pearl

I would have to say the SS Pearl over the Hybrid but I think that the Ragin Banshee is a better choice than either.
Every ball that I have seen with the same core as the Ragin has given an even and consistent reaction whether it was in the hand of a high or low rev bowler.
The Ragin is as good or better than either on both medium and med/lt.
Between the SSP and Hybrid the SSP is better on medium and the Hybrid is better on med/lt.
The SSP may be too strong in the back on the light side of medium and the Hybrid to mellow in the back on medium.
Hope this helps.

From what azguy says, I have the Black Ice, but when I was fitted the Pro wanted me to throw with my thumb at 10 o'clock becuase I had a problem turning my wrist and I did get a small hook.  Sunday I tried the palm grip and had much more control, but NO hook.  I did hear that the Crossfire does hook more than the Ice, but the Black Ice is supposed to be a good ball also unless you have no limit on price.

I went from an Ebonite Tornado Warning to a Storm Diablo for the same reasons. My average jumped form 156 to 178 overnight and I can throw in the low 200's if I take my time and really work on the spares.
