Getting to the elusive 300?
« on: February 24, 2005, 02:18:37 AM »
Okay does anyone have any suggestions that are not technical towards getting to the 300. I have shot 280 and in the 270's more times than I can even remember and on numerous occasions I have shot 15 in a row, it was just across two games. I don't know if it's nerves or mental. I don't ever feel nervous. I was wondering if anyone could offer up a few pointers towards the mental game. Thanks in advance!

Practice!

If you find it impossible to ignore the score and focus on execution, than practice that.  For example, during practice, at any point in a game say to yourself: "ok, I have the front 9 strikes. I must throw the next 3 for the perfect game".  Imagine the scenario is real.  Fix it in your mind.  Try to throw the next three strikes as if it is the real thing.  The more you do something, the better you'll get at it.

If you can ignore the score and focus on execution, that's the best road to take.  With it must come the realization that sometimes you execute well and the results are not pefect.  Other times you do not execute well and the results are perfect.  That's the game of bowling.  All you can do is execute at your top level.  Once the ball leaves your hand, it is out of your control.  If you execute well enough, long enough, the scores will come.

Yes, I underline Janderson's entry: practice is vital, especially for mental game. A good practice session for me is to play bowling between social bowlers or do moonlight bowling with black light or disco lightning every now and then - not on purpose or the (dubious) fun of it, but because I do not have much spare time and must play whenever I can.

Nevertheless, this has helped me to focus on my execution, to blend out any of the many distractions and still to perform well.

Trying to set up such an environment will be very helpful in order to build focus ability on the lane - under any circumstance.
